AIBU students don’t have bags?

I seem to remember that was everyone’s argument for not having bag tax.
I don’t think carrier bags are going to push anyone into destitution anyway.

OMFG as well as the 2 x reusable bags I had to leave my handbag pen with Ds so he could write his name on his stuff in the kitchen! Car full of stuff he'd brought for uni and no pens or bags!

I tried to take mine shopping for notebooks and files for uni and she laughed at me! Pens seem to have gone the way of the slide rule.

Oh for goodness sake. I’m 47 and sometimes get caught short without a bag- we can’t all be perfect especially at 18!!

They’ve likely just moved. So this is them buying the bags they will use.

I work at a university and am a student and what has worried me this week is the number of students who turned up on day one without a pen…

Also one incredibly stoned man who was so high he fell down a staircase.

Except I conducted induction days today and there were multiple activities requiring pens. So students not taking pens actually really disrupts our days and looks really unprofessional

There freshers, this is the sort of thing that going away to uni teaches you - through experience.

Honestly I was an adult student, with my own home etc and most people on my course were driving the best cars, wearing the best clothes etc… I think the whole student budgeting is out of the window in some unis… plus it’s the start of the academic year so they might be stocking up for the year

My experience was that the many Bags For Life were already in their room, stuffed with winter coats, bedding, "essential" nicknacks, shoes, and all the things they thought about at the last minute and won't unpack until three weeks into term.

Give them a break, they've only been there a few days!
And a 5p bag won't really break the bank when they're paying £10K accommodation per year 🤭

I’d be more concerned with interest in spirits at 8am than if a bunch of practically still kids brought a reusable bag

I'm 60 and I'm not this boring OP.

My son and one of his housemates took their wheely suitcases "to do a big shop" after returning from the holidays. Only because they'd once seen another student doing it and thought it was a great idea.

There is quite a hill back to their place from the supermarket, carrying anything make it an even harder hill.

I’m a fully grown adult and 9 times out of 10 I don’t bring a bag to the supermarket if I pop in straight after work. It’s honestly not the end of the world. A 40p bag is not going to eat into their student loan even if they buy one each week. My maths is awful but even if they buy 1 bag a week for the 40 weeks they are at Uni, it’s still only about £16. They are young adults navigating life away from home, shopping, studying, cooking and enjoying life. They have bigger things to worry about than some random woman in a supermarket judging them for not bringing their own bag.

And as a side note, student rooms are tiny. My DS had no where to store anything let alone a pile of bulky reusable bags so that’s also something to consider.

What on earth, these are new students. Why would they cart around a bunch of shopping bags from house to house. They’ll buy them and likely reuse them eventually but it’s the start of year. Also it’s none of your business what people do, the charge is there for a reason

I’ve been on Mumsnet for twenty years and I don’t think I’ve ever heard of anything so unreasonable. They’ve. Just arrived. No, they don’t have bags.

Eat into their budget. 🙄Maybe they have budgeted for bags.

I’ve just sent my dd £100 on the back of this. In case she wants bags.

I have two students, so I’ve visited both halls and student flats lots over the last few years.

1. No student is using Tescos bags as bin bags.
2. No one is poor because they bought a supermarket plastic bag.
3. Your carbon footprint is no doubt considerably higher than the average student.

It’s freshers week OP, the students shopping now are probably just happy they managed to find the supermarket! Give it a few weeks and they'll be bringing bags with them.

Maybe they're just alright fronting the 40p for a bag?

How does something like this even register with someone ? I can’t imagine paying any attention to who does or does not have a bag for life with them at the supermarket.
I regularly pick up new bags for life even if I don’t really need one, as they are really handy for around the house for storage, packing away seasonal clothing etc. didn’t realise I was committing a social faux pas.

Or for takeaway coffee or takeaways or lots of alcohol and maybe some drugs. 30p is nothing in the line of throwaway money
