Where do you think Jewish people come from?

Antisemitism is at full volume at the moment and I caveat this post with saying that I have absolutely no wish to make Jewish MNers feel uncomfortable but as an an atheist with no connection to Israel this really makes my blood boil.

I see so many SM posts about the Jews having 'colonized' Israel and Judea & Samaria, not having any claim to the land, not being indigenous and of course being 'Europeans settlers'.

They can't answer where they actually come from though so I thought anyone on here who shares their views might be able to give an answer and how they came to that conclusion.

I understand that Jews are an ethnicity with Judaism as their religion. Being Jewish is not a religion. Jews are still today spread out all over the world with the majority living in Israel and the US.

This has come into focus since the UK Government sanctions on Jewish businesses in Judea & Samaria recently with Jewish communities living there classed as 'illegal settlers'.

It's almost as if Jews and Judea have no connection at all.

So AIBU to ask where the Jews originated from if not from there?

I don't feel this belongs on the CITME board as although the war in Gaza has amplified beliefs, this not directly about that.

@Newbutoldfather may I please add some information about why many people are now using the term Jew hate instead of antisemitism and why many of them don't fit into your the extreme right wing list?

The term antisemitism was coined & popularized in the late 1870s by German journalist Wilhelm Marr. He was an agitator who whipped up hatred against Jews and used the term antisemitism (then spelled with a hyphen) to give credibility to the concept of Jew hatred, as it implied the existence of 'semitic' (to him that meant Jewish) inborn characteristics that conversion to e.g. Christianity could not erase.

So quite a few people now do not like to use the term 'antisemitism' because:
A) they feel it is irreparably tainted by its origins
B) it invites the erroneous argument that antisemitism includes hatred of other peoples of middle Eastern heritage (it doesn't - these hatreds are distinct from each other and take different forms. The term was coined to be used against Jews. Semitic describes a family of languages - it is not a racial category)

Hope this is useful 🙂

I agree and would go so far to say that Palestinians aren't the most agreeable of 'house guests'.

1.Following the 1967 Six-Day War, the PLO and various Palestinian fedayeen (guerrilla) factions relocated their primary base of operations to Jordan. Over time, these groups established a "state-within-a-state," setting up their own checkpoints, refusing to follow Jordanian law, and attempting to assassinate King Hussein.
In September 1970, after the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) hijacked several international civilian aircraft and landed them in Jordan, King Hussein declared martial law. A brutal civil war ensued between the Jordanian Armed Forces and Palestinian militants. By July 1971, Palestinian armed groups were completely defeated and expelled from the country, relocating to Lebanon.

2.After being expelled from Jordan, Yasser Arafat and the PLO established a new headquarters in Lebanon, creating a powerful enclave known as "Fatahland" in the south. Their presence upset Lebanon's fragile multi-religious demographic balance and eroded the central government's authority.

.In 1975, long-standing tensions in Lebanon erupted into a complex civil war. The PLO allied with the Lebanese National Movement (a coalition of leftist and Muslim factions) to fight against the Lebanese Christian militias (the Lebanese Front) and, at various points, clashed directly with the Lebanese Army and invading Syrian forces. The PLO maintained its military dominance in portions of Lebanon until the 1982 Israeli invasion forced them to evacuate to Tunisia.

3.While not an armed insurrection or a military attack initiated on Kuwaiti soil, the Palestinian leadership fundamentally compromised its host country during the Gulf War.
Prior to 1990, Kuwait hosted a highly prosperous community of roughly 400,000 Palestinians. When Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein invaded and occupied Kuwait in 1990, PLO leader Yasser Arafat publicly aligned with Iraq.
Many Kuwaitis viewed this political stance—and instances of local collaboration with Iraqi forces—as a severe betrayal by their guests. Following Kuwait's liberation by a US-led coalition in 1991, the Kuwaiti government and local citizens retaliated through mass deportations and violence, forcing around 300,000 Palestinians out of the country.

So it's not surprising that they haven't made themselves popular by persistently 'biting the hand that feeds them'

Yes, it seems to be mainly the West who insists on 'wide eyed' outrage on their behalf, infantilises and defends them.

I remember this video coming up on X a few years back and being shocked that a fellow Arab felt like that!

@BlessedIsTheFruit ,

1948 is nearly 80 years ago, and the West Bank is the area’s officially recognised name outside of Netanyahu’s Israel. if Netanyahu has the right to rename somewhere, does Trump?

London was only London since medieval times, a blink of the eye historically.

‘Any other labels you want to give truth seekers and truth tellers?’

How do you seek the truth? What are your sources?

BlessedIsTheFruit · 25/09/2026 16:23

Maybe the mods can explain why they deleted my 14.20 post btw?

I didn't state anything that isn't factual unless facts are deemed as 'hate'.

If @Humdingerydoo or @Newbutoldfather reported it, who I believe are both Jewish, the irony is off the scale!

@BlessedIsTheFruit ,

I am quite an extreme free speech believer. I don’t even care about outright racism. I would far prefer to see people’s prejudices out front, so that they can be be exposed to examination and ridicule.

I only ever report personal attacks. I haven’t reported any posts on this thread.

Why do Jew haters call Israel Palestine then?

Israel started to referring to the West Bank as Judea & Samaria again in 1967. It was not a Palestinian State then. Why do you think the international community continued using the Jordanian name of it?

My sources - Palestinians.

However, I'm not surprised it was deleted. It was a very unpleasant post.

Humdingerydoo · 25/09/2026 17:25

But I do agree that calling it Judea and Samaria is fine as long as people still insist on calling Israel Palestine. Only allowing one of those would be intensely hypocritical.

NullaEffugium · 25/09/2026 17:32

CrazyMidget · 25/09/2026 05:51

You're conflating colonisation and ethnic cleansing. Colonisers didn't expel a people from their own land. They wanted the people to remain in place so they could be controlled and exploited. The Anglo-Saxons colonised ancient Britain (as it was spelt then) and they didn't expel the Britons. The equivalent to the issue that Jews face would be if ancient Britons were violently expelled from Britain by the Anglo-Saxons, became stateless, were compelled to roam, and spent the next ten centuries or so being persecuted because you weren't where you belong - in Britain.

That's assuming that you are descended from ancient Britons, as opposed to from Anglo-Saxons. If the latter, you still would not be able to theoretically claim German nationality, because your forbears would have CHOSEN to move to ancient Britain and CHOSEN to stay. This is not the same as being expelled from what's present-day Germany.

So you're making a false equivalence.

(I feel very bad for the Jewish people and all that they have suffered over so many centuries. I also feel very bad for the conditions that the Palestinians had to live in, all crowded in and controlled by the Israeli government, and made to be second-class citizens. Such a pity that both factions couldn't just share the land and be equals, and get along.)

The Anglo-Saxons tried damn hard to expel all the Romano-British. The Romano-British ended up north of the mountains in Scotland, West of the Mountains in Wales and some crossed to Ireland, and over the moors in the SW of Cornwall where some crossed over to Britanny and Scilly. It’s written in the DNA of British people even today.

Lexibletheflexible · 25/09/2026 05:57

Plantations aren't just about growing cotton. England siezed land from indigenous Irish people and resettled (poor) people from other parts of the UK to work the land. That is why an Irish person can find they are most English via their DNA.

The Cromwellian colonisation where the Irish were pushed westwards inn Ireland or transported to the Americas as forced labour.

For the same wrong reason as Israeli call The West Bank Judea and Samaria. Because they want the name to become the reality.

I don’t think either are OK.

So if they are not going to have the country of Israel, where can they have which will be a safe haven?

The irony is that Israel is not safe, it’s a war zone. Irrespective of whether the land ‘belongs’ to the Jews or not (and after so many years that’s irrelevant), the whole point of setting up a Jewish state was to provide a safe homeland for.

Who in their right mind ever thought there would be peace there?? Naive in the extreme.

I believe Jews should have a safe homeland. But not there where there has been fighting for years and sadly always will.

Well apparently there was a plan for us to have Madagascar, Uganda or some desolate part of Siberia at one point or another. Am sure none of those options would be drama free. Jews can’t live in Melbourne or Manchester or Pittsburgh in peace so not sure they’d be able to live in Uganda without some crazy person trying to kill us. Way too late now regardless but interesting to think about.

My mother always says she feels safest in Israel as at least she knows where the enemy is.

I don’t think it was Uganda! I think it was an area between Kenya and Tanzania.

My grandparents on one side went to help found the Jewish state there. It clearly didn’t go to well, though.

@BlessedIsTheFruit ,

It is interesting that you are linking to Gil Schuster videos as his views are actually antithetical to yours. He actually studies conflict resolution. Here are some quotes:

‘Gil-Shuster: The Israelis assume they‘re always going to have power, meaning they have to retain control over the situation. When Palestinians answer, I think they are considering what their families would think is the right way to answer – what is socially acceptable. They feel they have to come across as very tough. They know they have no power. All they have is their ego, the confidence to say this is mine, because otherwise they would lose their identity.’

‘Gil-Shuster: If the politicians: there‘s your problem. You need leaders with vision. And at the moment, none of them – whatever their allegiance – has any idea of how to proceed. I can’t see any solution right now, but personally I would accept any solution that the majority on both sides were prepared to accept. I regard the two-state solution as the best one, because it is the solution everybody understands, though ultimately, a confederation might make more sense.’

Obviously, this is all pre 07/10.

He is using these videos to try and understand why views are what they are and understand both sides, which is laudable.

The Arabs in the region called it Judea and Samaria as well. The only entity that called it the West Bank was the Jordanian illegal occupation from 1948 for 19 years.

‘What is your opinion of my using Palestinian sources in my assessment of Palestinians btw?’

It’s just very vague. Which Palestinian sources?

As I think I said upthread (and certainly have on many other threads), the population has been radicalised, as have the Israeli population to some extent.

The question is how to deradicalise both sides and make them realise that living side by side and trading will get them a lot further in the long run than hating each other. I don’t believe that one type of person is intrinsically different to another (because I am not a racist).

We need more initiatives like this one:

Super interesting. I didn’t realise it actually went anywhere, thought it was just a random idea like shipping the Jews to a Madagascar ghetto. Any stories from them?

Newbutoldfather · 25/09/2026 19:05

@PurpleThistle7 ,

They are long dead, sadly, and I never even met them before they died. We have very long generations (they went there in about 1917 I think).

I am not sure it ever went anywhere, to be honest. I think they, and quite a few other Jews went out to start it and then they just got on with their lives and forgot about it.

There is still a tiny Jewish community in Kenya and an orthodox synagogue in Nairobi.
