Disabled Parking

Do any of you park in disabled parking spaces? If so, can I ask you why? I’m not talking about mums with baby’s who need to get car seats out

Yes because I have a blue badge, Why would people with prams be exempt from parking in disabled bay? Are you poking the bear @Goldengirl123

Not at all! I knew if I didn’t add the bit about mums then a little if replies would have been about that

Under no circumstances. Do you?

StarPyjamas · 23/09/2026 15:12

WiddlinDiddlin · 23/09/2026 14:12

Yes, every time.

Because I am disabled, have a blue badge and need the space to get in/out of the car.

You might want to be a bit specific about who it is you're talking about here.

🤣🤣

Before I had a BB I used them when with a friend who was on crutches after surgery and I think that was valid so feel no guilt about it.

Now I don’t think that’s the point of tge OP but I feel there is an issue the current BB system.
Basically you get a BB for 3 years then need to renew it. There is no system in place for a short term use of a BB space. I’m thinking about babies with hip dysplasia that are in a cast. Or adult who’ve had a hip replacement. Someone who is struggling during let’s say cancer treatment. All short term but all needing space to open the door or to be close to entrances.
Id like to see something like this too.

Gobbledegoo · 23/09/2026 15:13

We are all probably all aware that certain disabilities aren't obvious. What to my mind is very very obvious is that people are borrowing BBs and using them to park in Disabled Bays so their wide car isn't inadvertently damaged by people opening car doors.

Poppinpoppinpopcorn · 23/09/2026 15:13

Mums with babies shouldn't park in them UNLESS one of them has a BB. Yes I park in them because I have a BB.

seahorsessky · 23/09/2026 15:14

Overthebow · 23/09/2026 14:12

No and as a mum whose had two babies I have never parked in a disabled bay to get them out of the car either, I’m not sure why that would be a valid reason.

It's absolutely not. Having kids is a choice, and doesn't mean you're in pain or struggling to move (obviously some people have pregnancy/birth related disabilities, but those people would be able to use spaces for disabled people legitimately).
No, I'd never be so selfish, OP, and it's awful that people who are actually have kids.

I’m sorry but I still don’t understand what’s your question there
Can you elaborate?

whereonthestair · 23/09/2026 15:15

Yes, with my son with his blue badge, with my dad with his blue badge, with my mum with her blue badge. On my own no.

Hellohah · 23/09/2026 15:16

I used to park in disabled spaces when taking my Grandad to places but he had a blue badge.

Never parked in a disabled bay on my own or as an alternative to baby & toddler spaces.

It genuinely baffles me as to why people would without a blue badge.

Sirzy · 23/09/2026 15:17

I don’t get why some people find this so hard. Unless the person who has the blue badge is getting out of the car and/or into the car you don’t park there.

the only time I park in a disabled space without disabled DS is if I am picking him up from college as he needs the spaces to get in.

TeenLifeMum · 23/09/2026 15:17

My gp told me to park in the disabled space (tiny village gp with very small spaces) when I had appointments with my baby twins and toddler, but generally I wouldn’t.

That said, my dad has lung cancer and a brain tumour which causes him to hallucinate. He didn’t qualify for a disabled badge (dad got confused about feet and meters and assessor only accepted his first answer - I’m still furious) and was told “you don’t get it for terminal illness, only when you move to end of life”. Obviously dad doesn’t drive but mum has to drop him at the supermarket front door and go and find a space. I wouldn’t blame her for using a disabled space but she’s very law abiding.

GoodGirlFaith · 23/09/2026 15:18

Never.

A close friend has a Blue Badge and a disabled daughter. She never fails to park in the disabled bays even when her daughter is not with her (I do not agree with this and tend not to accept her offers of lifts because of it).

At the same time, she complains about people parking in disabled bays who do not need them. On one occasion, just the 2 of us went out to the theatre and there were only 3 disabled parking bays. She parked in one. Leaving only 2 for a whole theatre's worth of people.

She basically parks where she wants, yellow lines etc., just wherever she feels like it because she says her Blue Badge gets her off all charges.

bababamama · 23/09/2026 15:18

I never have but I see people illegally using badges daily

Can you explain what you mean there?

Yellowsubmarineunderthesea · 23/09/2026 15:24

I will admit to using one a few times. Good friend had a horrendous leg injury, multiple operations to fix it and eventually got to the stage where she could walk a bit once she had a shopping trolley to hold on to. It didn't qualify her for a blue badge so I would park up next to the door and get her sorted with a trolley and leave her for few mins while I'd repark the car. There was really no other solution or else she'd never have got to the shopping center or start practicing walking safely. I wouldn't apologize for using it either. She was absolutely disabled at that point, and actually in a worse position than when she was in a wheelchair as I could push her wherever she needed to go.

DinoLil · 23/09/2026 15:25

Yes. Always. I have a Blue Badge because I'm disabled.

AtLeastIDidntUseASpoon · 23/09/2026 15:25

Yes I park in them.

Because I have a blue badge and am disabled.

Trouble is around where I am, there is never enough BB spaces. It’s actually quite hard to get a free BB space. So if they aren’t free, I go home.

Annie890 · 23/09/2026 15:29

my mum is disabled and we got to the hospital and all disabled spaces were taken. Out walks a bloke from the hospital entrance over to his car which was parked in a disabled space. I had a right go at him as we had struggled massively in a non-disabled space
with the wheelchair and lifting her in and out.

he effed and blinded at me saying ‘not all disabilities are visible!’ But being able to walk sprightly and at great speed does not justify using a disabled space in my opinion!!!

AnonyMumAuDHD · 23/09/2026 15:35

Yes. But we have a blue badge that entitles us to. I don’t when I don’t have the badge holder with me.

Never did when I had smaller children/buggies (and no blue badge) - that’s what parent and baby parking spaces are for. And if there were none left, I made do with what was available, tried another car park or went home and returned later when DH came home and could have the kids.

FloofyKat · 23/09/2026 15:36

Why are you asking, OP?

Did he have a BB?

Zimunya · 23/09/2026 15:49

I realise this is completely off topic, but do dads never take the kids out? Only "Mum's"?

Dogdogdogdig · 23/09/2026 15:50

I park in them because I have a BB.

what’s the relevance of mums and babies? They shouldn’t be parking in them unless they have a BB.

emptygoosenest · 23/09/2026 15:52

No and I didn't when I had baby twins.
But I did get fed up with people without dc parking in parent and child spaces, so I understand the frustration with misused spaces.
