Mother in law keeps calling me fat

Just need somewhere to vent really as I’m really upset.
ive been struggling now for a while, I’m under a referral for suspected lipedema in thighs.
I’ve gone from 75kg to 93kg without any reason, and it’s literally all in the lower part of my body my face and upper body is still slim.
I eat well, I’m very active, tried cutting calories and I exercise 3/4 week and even joined karate with my son a few months ago.
I’ve literally tried everything so I went to the gp and they’ve referred me to the lipedema clinic to see if this is what the issue is ( I’ve had blood tests all are clear)

my mother in law is currently staying with us, my in laws are Asian and I’ve had comments from other family members about my legs and lower body.
in the past I’ve had an eating disorder caused by comments and even at my skinniest my legs where still the biggest part of me and I went through 2 years of not eating properly because of comments they were saying.

my mother in law came 2 months ago to stay, and alls I’ve heard every day she been here is how big i am and she doesn’t understand why.

for the past 2 days I’ve been crying. yesterday we was in the kitchen and randomly out of no where she squatted down and asked me “ can you do this” “ if you can do this it will help make your legs and hips smaller”
and then went on to tell me “ your very big”

today I asked her to alter some of my outfits and make them a bit bigger from the hips and she said to me “ when I had it stitched I didn’t realize how much big you are” “ you used to be your sister in laws size”

I’ve been in my room crying for over half an hour.
I’ve literally tried everything and nothing I’m doing I can loose weight or helps my thighs and it is now seriously mentally affecting me the things she is saying and it is almost every day she is saying it. I woke up at 6 this morning as I’ve been weighing myself every day and when I saw I’d gained a pound since yesterday I was crying looking in the mirror and alls I could hear in my mind is “ your very big”

I really don’t know what to do anymore because nothing is working and what she is doing is seriously affecting me mentally.
My husband says “ she doesn’t mean it to hurt you” but she is hurting me and I am burning inside and want to say something really bad to her.

@Zaina89i have lipoedema so I feel your pain. At 93kg though I’d guess you still have a fair amount of ‘normal’ fat in your body which could be lost with diet / exercise. However, this is not the point. You should ask your MIL to stop commenting, especially in front of your daughter as it will cause her immense damage. In terms of getting diagnosed, you can see a surgeon to seek a formal diagnosis and not have surgery. There are a few in the uk, and there are some private doctors who will also offer face to face consultations to diagnose you. There is no cure through unless you do remove it via surgery. You can manage symptoms with compression garments/ MLD therapy and diet but none of them reduce the size of your legs. If surgery is affordable and you are in good health, you should explore that as an option. There are excellent surgeons in Europe who charge half of what you’d pay here. If you use Facebook, search for some support groups and you’ll find a few. Good luck.

SlightlyTerrifiedButPolite · 22/09/2026 16:52

You need to ask your DH to put down a boundary with your MIL. My DH is from a similar background, they listen to sons and when he’s stepped in with mine it’s been helpful and she has listened

A friend of mine has lipodema and she said mounjaro has helped with some of the pain and swelling. It’s now only really visible if you are familiar with lipodema/you know what to look for and she isnt in trousers. She looks great and didn’t have surgery of course everyone is different and it may be recommended. But could be worth starting with the mounjaro xx

PrincessofWills · 22/09/2026 10:28

Have you chatted to your gp about mounjaro/wegovy? It sounds as though there's good medical reason to try weight loss drugs.

Re you MiL - sounds as though she has foot in mouth problems.

If it is Lipodema, weight loss jabs would be a fucking stupid idea.

cartagenagina · 22/09/2026 16:32

I would have told her to get the fuck out of my house and not to return until she had learned some manners.

Who are you to say your culture is better than hers? She married into this family so it is her perogative to integrate. If some cultures place high value on maintaining a healthy weight than that doesn't make them any worse, if anything we should be admiring their ability to be frank and honest with people they care about.

Cultural imperialism at its worse.

She married into this family and therefore needs to integrate?

What an ugly patriarchal notion. Why didn’t her husband married into her family? Or maybe (just maybe) OP and her H are adults with their own home that get to decide what they to consider acceptable guest behaviour?

anyhow. What I am missing is the husband. Where is he? Why is he not supporting his wife who has repeatedly been reduced to tears? Why is he allowing his mother to make comments about his daughter’s body?

I think the MiL is in OP's country though so arguably it's for the MiL to integrate.

However, while I think the MiL is in the wrong, she's only in OP's country temporarily and she's not going to adapt to a whole new culture straight away. The suggestion to 'look her in the eye and tell her she's rude' made ma laugh because people who are blunt really won't care about that...

RampantIvy · 22/09/2026 16:27

@Zaina89 Given that this woman thinks it is OK to say it as it is that must give you free rein to be as rude back to her.

Or you could say "if you can't be polite and respectful towards my daughter and me in our own home you can't expect us to show you politeness and respect either"

wheelywheelynice · 22/09/2026 16:21

Zaina89 · 22/09/2026 13:21

I have looked into it but don’t know where to start, the only ones I’ve seen are the ones who deal with liposuction/ surgeries and I’d like to avoid that route if I can/ for as long as I can and try my best to manage it myself.

but any advice would be great if anyone knows of any experts, I’ve been referred to the lipedema clinic but I don’t know how long it will take.

they are Pakistani, non of these women inside the family are slim at all, just they are big from everywhere and not in one place like me and they don’t understand there is different body shapes and medical issues that cause these things. Yet if I did this to them they wouldn’t tolerate it.

my mother in law isn’t even slim, my sister in law isn’t even slim yet these comments always get aimed at me no matter my size. Even If I loose weight they’ll still tell me I need to work more on my legs this is what they did when I had an eating disorder and went anorexic and was ill, they still refused to understand I was unwell and kept telling me I need to work more on my legs and loose more from there and I kept eating less and less, I lost weight during my pregnancies because I was scared of gaining weight and being told things.

if I said the same things to my mother in law and sister in law my husband would kick me out himself because it wouldn’t be okay for me to do the same. This is the difference and they simply don’t want to understand and just aim it directly at me. It’s just the daily comments I can’t take, I don’t understand how she is expecting me to change that much in a day. I’m obviously not anorexic anymore but I still have disordered eating always as it’s a mental condition. I still am very cautious what I eat and what I can eat and how much I’m “allowed to eat”
they just refuse to understand

She's a knob OP, I know how utterly draining it is having someone constantly talking about your weight while also telling you to eat more. My mum is like this and its honestly just sheer rudeness. Like you say it wouldn't be tolerated the other way around. No idea how to stop it, its so ingrained.

MyOliveViewer · 22/09/2026 15:54

I be so tempted to make some passive aggressive comment about her appearance so she knows how it feels. ‘You know, I could comment on your appearance and your age too, but I have enough empathy to know that just because you can say something hurtful doesn’t mean you should’.

Mincepiesnow · 22/09/2026 15:51

I'd be telling her to not so politely shut her mouth. Please stand up for yourself and your daughter. Your husband needs to support you too and tell her to shut it, but I suspect he won't or even if he will, she'll just continue anyway. Time to send MIL packing and out of your house.

Tbh, I think that the UK is in the minority when it comes to the social norm of not commenting on weight. In other cultures it’s normal. Even the French do this.

Correct. And yet Britain that believe their modern politically correct social norms are more superior than most of the world, despite the fact the UK is a tiny island and they’re in the minority.

As a Russian who has lived in several European countries before the UK, other nationalities say what they see. Personally I find hiding and crying in one’s bedroom in your own house because you’re not direct enough to put the guest in their rightful place, a bigger character flaw than someone factually acknowledging someone is overweight. The woman is acting like a guest in her own house.

angelos02 · 22/09/2026 15:31

All of the culture and medical issues aside, she is a guest in your home and should not be making cruel, unnecessary comments to you - the host. I would throw her out on the spot.

theneighbourgotmycake · 22/09/2026 15:29

Sunbringer · 22/09/2026 15:25

So in those cultures it’s more polite to make someone dealing with a health condition and with a previous eating disorder cry because she cannot make her body smaller due to her medical condition? And to go on about it day after day when you’re a guest in that persons home?

it's not the drama some people make it here. And because it's not such a drama, people don't tend to be fat.

WiddlinDiddlin · 22/09/2026 15:26

Tell her 'you are so rude, shut your mouth or fuck off'. That'll do the trick one way or the other.

I have lipodema, I am also fat as well, I am on mounjaro and it has shifted a LOT of the excess fluid, not all of it but a significant amount.

Sunbringer · 22/09/2026 15:25

theneighbourgotmycake · 22/09/2026 15:23

it's not "cuntiness"

Other cultures believe the worst thing is being hypocritical and pretend you don't see something, or pretend that's it's acceptable.

You might not like it, but it doesn't make you right and them wrong.
Different ways to look at things.

Why are people so offended by the word "fat".

Zaina89 · 22/09/2026 10:37

Yes I do.
my oldest daughter has just turned 11 and she does it to her as well.
she just started her period a few months ago and obviously her body is changing and she constantly gets compared to my niece who is the same age who is very little and very thin.

I’ve been told by her my daughter’s period has started so soon because she eats junk and she’s lazy.
and says that because she’s lazy that’s why she’s “big” and girls look nice slim. My daughter isn’t fat at all but now
even though it’s said in another language she does understand what’s being said she has started asking me if her bum looks big in clothes and why she has big thighs.
she’s not eating to much either and his mum just constantly complains she’s not eating properly and I’ve said to my husband maybe if she stops calling her fat as well she may eat more.

in my family we are more pear shaped anyways which is the shape my oldest daughter seems to be taking. I’ve always been bigger on my thighs and hips but it’s just since after the birth of my 3rd child I’ve seemed to keep getting bigger without any reason.

11 isn’t soon… it’s the exact average age for a first period in the UK. 8 is soon, 7 is precocious.

I’m so fucking sick of ‘culture’ being an excuse for cuntiness.

No it’s fucking NOT ok to call someone fat just because you are Asian.

NosinaBook · 22/09/2026 15:21

I'm fat, mostly down to developing bad coping mechanisms throughout childhood trauma. I don't get offended by the word fat, it's a correct physical description and not much different to saying I have green eyes. Try to be as healthy as you can be and give shots back if people are trying to put you down. Tell her she's getting wrinkly 😆 but most of all don't attach your self worth to your physical appearance because it can and will change as you age. Looking good is all fine and well but you're not an ornament and looking good isn't the same as being a decent person.

Sunbringer · 22/09/2026 15:20

Have you told her you have a medical condition and it’s not like normal fat?

Honestly I’d have told her not to be so rude to me in my own home.

It sounds from what Op has said, that she has a weight issue. The Lipodema (if any) is quite likely to be a parallel issue.

No. Lipedema is not parallel. Lipedema is THE main issue. If you have lipedema your lipedemic fat can only be removed by suction. Then specific massage

Lipedema tends to be found in the legs and glutes. Mainly. It cannot be removed by wegovy or weight loss or exercise

AbzMoz · 22/09/2026 15:15

I’d go absolutely nuclear at mil and DH. All comments and insults stop now. Is she staying in your home? This is a medical condition that’s under active investigation (and even if it wasn’t she needs to learn some manners). I don’t care one jot about cultural differences; no one should be forced to accept insults or jibes. The comparison between SIL and whoever are not helpful.

I hope you and your daughter go out for a nice manicure or whatever to get some respite from this toxic environment.

If she has lipodoema/lymphoedema these will be of no help whatsoever.
