Mother in law keeps calling me fat

Just need somewhere to vent really as I’m really upset.
ive been struggling now for a while, I’m under a referral for suspected lipedema in thighs.
I’ve gone from 75kg to 93kg without any reason, and it’s literally all in the lower part of my body my face and upper body is still slim.
I eat well, I’m very active, tried cutting calories and I exercise 3/4 week and even joined karate with my son a few months ago.
I’ve literally tried everything so I went to the gp and they’ve referred me to the lipedema clinic to see if this is what the issue is ( I’ve had blood tests all are clear)

my mother in law is currently staying with us, my in laws are Asian and I’ve had comments from other family members about my legs and lower body.
in the past I’ve had an eating disorder caused by comments and even at my skinniest my legs where still the biggest part of me and I went through 2 years of not eating properly because of comments they were saying.

my mother in law came 2 months ago to stay, and alls I’ve heard every day she been here is how big i am and she doesn’t understand why.

for the past 2 days I’ve been crying. yesterday we was in the kitchen and randomly out of no where she squatted down and asked me “ can you do this” “ if you can do this it will help make your legs and hips smaller”
and then went on to tell me “ your very big”

today I asked her to alter some of my outfits and make them a bit bigger from the hips and she said to me “ when I had it stitched I didn’t realize how much big you are” “ you used to be your sister in laws size”

I’ve been in my room crying for over half an hour.
I’ve literally tried everything and nothing I’m doing I can loose weight or helps my thighs and it is now seriously mentally affecting me the things she is saying and it is almost every day she is saying it. I woke up at 6 this morning as I’ve been weighing myself every day and when I saw I’d gained a pound since yesterday I was crying looking in the mirror and alls I could hear in my mind is “ your very big”

I really don’t know what to do anymore because nothing is working and what she is doing is seriously affecting me mentally.
My husband says “ she doesn’t mean it to hurt you” but she is hurting me and I am burning inside and want to say something really bad to her.

Dont get upset and cry.....get angry and stand up for yourself! How dare she belittle and bully you like that?? You sound lovely....you are hosting her in your home, and she insults you even when she can see it upsets you. And yes it is intrusive and rude! It would serve her right to be shoved out the door and told to fuck off.

"You're very big"
Look her square in the face, make eye contact "You're extremely rude" and walk away.

Horrible woman. She needs to leave and your husband needs to get out of nappies and take his thumb out his mouth

As @LavenderDisco says!

Call out her rudeness every single time. Don't put up with excuses from her or DH. If they say, "It's our culture to be outspoken" counter with "It's my culture to point it out when people are being rude."

This is clearly a medical issue, not an over eating one. You know that. It doesn't matter what she knows - you know the truth. And tell DH that you expect him to support you and call out any rudeness immediately.

Bellyblueboy · 22/09/2026 10:32

I agree, call it out every time: look shocked and say ‘did you intend to be so rude and hurtful’. Then walk away.

where is your husband in all this?

do you have children. This type of comment is unacceptable and, as you know, can cause immense damage. Explain comments on your weight and body will not be tolerated in your home. if she can’t obey such a basic I request then she can’t visit

whippersnapper55 · 22/09/2026 10:31

You need your husband to step up here - he needs to speak to his mother and tell her not to be so bloody rude or she will have to leave your home. You shouldn't have to put up with this in your own home! Tell him to shape up or go and stay with your own family until she's gone!

clapalongnow · 22/09/2026 10:29

I would say something thing really bad to her.

PrincessofWills · 22/09/2026 10:28

Have you chatted to your gp about mounjaro/wegovy? It sounds as though there's good medical reason to try weight loss drugs.

Re you MiL - sounds as though she has foot in mouth problems.

You don't have a weight problem you have a husband problem.

Never have your in-laws to visit for so long again.

Crikeyalmighty · 22/09/2026 10:22

To be honest Zaina- this MIL wouldn’t be staying with me any longer if she was so bloody rude- your H really needs to grow some balls and have a word with her on his own explaining that you are well aware and have a medical issue they are trying to get to the bottom of and he would appreciate it if she would ‘shut the fuck up’ and stop hassling you about it

Poppasocks · 22/09/2026 10:21

Time for MIL to go home! And if your husband disagrees he can join her!

Zaina89 · 22/09/2026 10:20

For context I am a size small on the top and a large on the bottom.
