To be annoyed about milestone birthday

I have a ‘big’ birthday approaching. My mum (who I have a complicated relationship with) and my dh (to a lesser extent) keep asking what I want and what ‘the plans are’. Before anyone starts, I am very grateful that I have people who want to give me anything, I know some don’t. But they just seem to want me to make all arrangements and basically give them instructions on what to get me.

My mum in particular seems to be getting pissy at the fact that I can’t seem to give an instant answer on what I want and has huffed oh fine then I’ll just give you money.

For reference on her 60th I paid for a weekend away for the family and on dh milestone birthday I arranged a fancy meal and put a lot of thought into personal gifts that I knew he’d like. I don’t need or want anything big but it would mean a lot to me if they just used their imagination to come up with something thoughtful without needing direct instructions. They both know me, it’s not like asking them to come up with something for a stranger.

I’m not at all excited for my birthday and to be honest it feels more like another task on the to do list to plan something for myself (and them) to enjoy. Aibu or do I sound like a moany cow? How can I politely explain this to them?

They want you to have the celebration that you want and the gifts that you want. Can't you give them a clue? Suggest things that you would like to do, meal out, theatre, day trip, weekend in Paris, whatever. Gift wise if there are things you'd like make list. If you don't want/need anything make the birthday treat the gift.

The last thing you want is for everyone to be miserable. If you genuinely want surprises and won't be disappointed, they tell them that.

My last big birthday I said no presents but booked a trip to one of the places on my bucket list.

Well it takes the pressure off me and everyone else 🤷‍♀️

I know everyone’s different but surely there’s more pleasure in giving? It’s my partner’s milestone birthday next month and I cannot wait to give him his presents.

There are doers and none doers

you have done in the past and it’s gone well so they like you to do the doing

i am a doer and I quite understand how depressing it gets when no one else does yet they are so happy to participate

Going for a meal on someone’s birthday is hardly high pressure is it?

ToKittyornottoKitty · 20/09/2026 18:31

Just say you’d like them to plan a surprise, hardly a massive task on your to do list is it? Or if you aren’t bothered anyway just do nothing, it might be boring but it'll satisfy your inner martyr at least.

I think that's a reasonable question for a big birthday. Echoing others, I'd like to do something nice just us, a bigger occasion (if your choosing) with my wider family and friends. A really chilled day for it etc

’I would love it if you could organise something for us to do on the evening of/the night of my birthday, and the most important thing to me is that the gift is thoughtful’.

I think this is a good answer.

I honestly can’t be arsed with my birthday or anyone else’s much.
We’re not 5 years old. A card and a present/money is fine for me 🤷‍♀️

StarPyjamas · 20/09/2026 17:59

Just accept the money then.

Tell them both what you'd like for your birthday. Tell them you're looking forward to a lovely meal out/weekend away which you are hoping they will arrange.
If they don't sort something, then book something yourself to go with a friend.

It's lovely that you did that for your mum, but in my experience people do generally plan their own milestone birthdays, or at least come up with the idea, because they have preferences. If you want them to surprise you with something I think you have to make that clear, but there's certainly a risk it might not be what you like!

noranges · 20/09/2026 17:43

could you say you want a big surprise? it maybe they don't want to organise something to later find out you wanted something else
