To ask if anyone actually sticks to 20mph speed limits?

Why are you doing 22 if the speed limit is 20 and you are so careful about sticking to it OP? That doesn’t make sense.

Yes some people speed and tailgate. It’s annoying. They are arseholes.

My observation as a Welsh person is that everyone is still driving at 30 in the new 20mph limits (which replaced 30 in built up areas here). Apart from my mum, who has never knowingly broken a speed limit in her life (but who has been pulled over by the police for driving so slowly they thought she was drunk - she wasn't).

Edited to add: "Everyone" includes police cars and other emergency service vehicles, without blues and twos on, in my experience. Also buses.

Im in Wales and the 20mph is shit.

The streets round me are 20mph, narrow, cars parked on both sides. There’s always some idiot driving too fast for the conditions. There’s a bad blind corner most of us take slowly, the wilting bunches of flowers on a lamppost are there because someone didn’t.

Exactly the same in my area of Scotland where we've had blanket 20mph tor about 2 months now. There are no speed cameras anywhere

No, nobody around here bothers with them. Half our town is 20mph and it’s roundly ignored - even by the police most of the time 😂

My journey used to take just under 30 minutes, it now takes about 50-55. I go through various 20 mph zones and have to avoid school streets and LTNs so it’s just a factor - the journey time has increased with each of them, the 20mph limit being the most recent. I stick to the limit as I’m a responsible driver but it’s still frustrating and is the final nail in the coffin for what was becoming an increasingly more challenging journey.

Maybe take it up with the local police force then 🙄

I do but my car does not have a speed limiter for as low as 20 (for some stupid reason) which means I drive probably at around 18mph because im spending alot of my time looking at my speedometer instead of the road, which is dangerous in itself, so by driving a tad slower makes it less likely to drift over the 20 when looking at the road and not my speedometer. So i definitely piss the twats off!

I now know how to easily stick at 20 on my local frequently used roads as I can anticipate the undulation etc so braking, easing off the accelerator etc in the right spots but new to me 20mph limits I find a bit more challenging if im honest.

Sticking to 20 or below also saves fuel which at its current price can only be a good thing.

Probably not the only crime your local police force ignores. Especially if it is South Yorkshire police and women are being harmed.

Yes, pretty much (not going to claim perfection). I’m someone whose driving was significantly improved by a speed awareness course. Loving the speeding justification bingo on this thread, as if 30mph was a human right.

No. 34 years ive been driving and never had any convictions or points.
I dont stare at the speedo but find sticking below 20 or at 20 quite difficult because one tiny move on the accelerator or slope in the road and its easy to drift over the 20. I do live in a hilly area.

They're actually quite good when it comes to things that actually matter.

Also all the people talking about speed cameras and knowing where they are are missing the fact that there are often mobile police speed vans and random hand held speed checks set up so you don’t always know where you’ll be caught.

I do, but can’t set cruise control under 25mph, so it’s bloody annoying.

Really depends what county you’re in, I hands down can’t remember the last time I saw a mobile police van in or around my town. All our permanent ones have been switched off. Rarely even see police at all these days’ I remember it was common to see them walking in pairs on the street.

Our police force put up posts every morning telling you where the mobile cameras will be. They’re also always in the same spot every time.

Mmm - mostly. I never go above about 24 on the car speedometer (which I guess is around 22 real speed) and if it's because there's a school stick slightly under 20.

I was coming home from work early a couple of weeks ago and driving along a national speed limit road - but it has a small section that drops to 20 only when the lights flash (it's a rural primary school) - lights were flashing as it was school finishing time. I dropped my speed on the approach and was doing 20 at the speed limit sign. Van behind me was less than appreciative and overtook me right at the school. Twat.

it amused me no end that he then got stuck behind the car that was a little bit in front of me - also doing the speed limit

and when the limit changed he couldn't overtake as it's a busy road. When we got into the town and the limit dropped to 20 as soon as he was able he sped up. At another school

There is a 20mph road between home and work. It's almost impossible to do 20 as it's down hill. I've been caught speeding twice in exactly the same place 🙈 I am usually very hot in sticking to the limit but that bloody road drives me mad!

So many speed limits are plainly wrong. We have roads which have historically been 60 for ever that are suddenly 40. Justification? Two fatal accidents in ten years. On the last accident it was a drug driver / road rage lunatic who forced another driver off the road. Of course a lower speed limit was going to change his behaviour, wasn't it? The other thinking is that there's a "dangerous bend" on the road which you can't take at 60 - so the whole 5 mile road becomes 40. Christ, if ever there was proof that people aren't taught to drive any more, just taught to pass the test, this is it. Then we have other roads that have junctions every 100 yards, but the SL is 40, where it should never be more than 30.

I seeth at having to crawl along at 20 when the roads are empty because the council see a fast buck.

Anyway. Do I stick to the limits? Yep. Rigidly. Not because I might get caught, but because I don't break any other laws. My licence permits me to drive according to the rules and regulations, nothing more or less. I wish every speed limit could be reviewed (and I think 20s should be 25s FWIW) but fat chance.
