I stick to my theory. Alice was in love with him but was too shy to make her move. She confided in Sally. Sally did all she could to keep them apart wanting him for herself. Alice then looked for love elsewhere and unexpectedly found Sylvia. Sylvia's mother is quietly supportive but not going to tell anyone so she says that Sylvia's marrying a fella from Galveston way.. The "big limousine" in Alice's drive is actually just an Uber.

I reckon she went to live with Sylvia’s mother. Mind you, that woman could talk it was always ‘Sylvia’s mother said…’. You could never have a proper phone convo without running out of money.

I don't trust Sally. I think she may have been whispering stuff in Alice's ear, probably telling her that he was secretly pining for Sylvia.

Plot twist. Sally murdered Alice because she wants her house and neighbour. And the limousine was, in fact, a hearse.
