To miss refined air travel?

BABaby88 · 17/09/2026 10:05

It's great everyone can travel. I'm sure. But I grew up travelling in airport lounges and flight decks where people dressed for the occasion.

I was in the Gatwick BA first class lounge this morning for a long weekend with DP and DC and goodness it was horrendous. Tracksuits, flipflops, everyone's guts hanging out, people stuffing packets of crisps into their bags as if famine was incoming.

Am I awful to miss the days when non-economy air travel felt a bit like a luxury not an endurance?

@BABaby88 are you taking your children out of school for this trip? That's terrribly chavvy, IMO.

pinkdelight · 17/09/2026 11:00

They are well mannered, happy children going on holiday. I keep my opinions to myself when around them (although one did say "mummy
why is that man in a football shirt when we are not allowed to wear them to school?") Fair point I would say.

It's not a fair point at all. He wasn't at school. He was in a football shirt because he likes them and adults can wear what they like, esp when going on holiday. Your DC will be as judgy as you, or possibly just a bit thick.

To be honest I wish we were more refined as a society.

Causal clothing absolutely everywhere even in a nice restaurant now.

Even at the office it’s much much more casual now. Maybe if you work for a top law firm or in banking it’s different but I don’t so I wouldn’t know.

Ds is a chartered accountant and their dress code is dress for your day. So he wears a suit and tie for client visits, but the office is casual.

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 17/09/2026 11:00

I have flown first class - BA from Heathrow and back. It wasn’t remotely like this. It was quiet and civilised. Wasn’t sure about changing into the PJs they provide for sleep but I dress comfortably but being smart for 10 hours plus when you need to sleep doesn’t work. I enjoyed the little extras like staff making up the flat bed seat and fewer people around me. It was very pleasant. I guess where you fly to makes a huge difference too. I suspect my destinations don’t attract oiks.

Conniebygaslight · 17/09/2026 11:01

There's nothing like 'The Great Unwashed' OP 😂

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 17/09/2026 11:01

What do you mean by ‘flight deck’? It’s actually the official industry word for ‘cockpit’ - I take it you weren’t criticising the crew’s uniform.

Nofeckingway · 17/09/2026 11:03

This poster can not be for real . But on the topic of flying .

The accessibility of low cost flights mean that groups of people can now afford to travel . Previously the cost meant it was too expensive for a large part of the population. It was very common for people to have never flown in an airplane and only holidayed at home .

Never mind the dressing up part . What I miss is the treatment of passengers as a valued customer. Things were designed for people 's comfort . So no carrying your own bag as luggage was included in price , air bridges instead of making your way out to tarmac in all weathers up a rickety staircase . Free drinks , snacks , pillows , blankets , earphones for movies .

But security needs , commercial factors like maximising the retail spaces on airports , seemingly limitless access to alcohol no matter what time , has reduced airline travel to a uncomfortable grubby experience.

Ilovemyshed · 17/09/2026 11:05

YANBU OP. I always wear something smarter to fly business class or above. Stretchy trousers and a loose blouse, topped off with a smart jacket tjat is clearly good quality. I change into a cashmere poncho on board. Comfortable ballet pumps and a smart bag. Always very polite and chatty to the airline team.

What is interesting is the amount of times someone from check in/security/ flight goes out of their way to do something extra for me (upgrade, help with bags, nicer seat etc).

Periperi2025 · 17/09/2026 11:07

There's only one thing for it OP, stop eating avacado on toast and frivolously wasting money on pressed takeway coffee and get yourself a private jet.

Panama2 · 17/09/2026 11:09

They are in the same lounge as you, you’re not so special

LongTallTally · 17/09/2026 11:09

BABaby88 · 17/09/2026 10:36

What makes you think my children were sad?!

They had the best time and will over the next few weeks while abroad as a family.

They are well mannered, happy children going on holiday. I keep my opinions to myself when around them (although one did say "mummy
why is that man in a football shirt when we are not allowed to wear them to school?") Fair point I would say.

Really? Your child doesn't understand there are different rules in school and out of school, or that different families dress in different ways? Are you Jacob Rees Mogg?

GoodGirlFaith · 17/09/2026 11:10

'luxury not an endurance'

How do you plan to recover from this, OP?

OldieButBaddie · 17/09/2026 11:10

Yes, you are awful (but I think this must be a wind up unless you actually are Hyacinth Bucket)

Do get a grip, people are allowed to wear whatever they want! There is no dress code for an airport lounge, however "exclusive" you may feel they are. The fact is they aren't, anyone with the money or airline status can pay for a ticket and use them and dress as they see fit. It has been this way for a long time so unless you were busy flying first class when you were 5 dressed up like Lady Di you probably can't actually remember the days when it was like this, or is this an attitude handed down from your Parents? Beware of doing the same for your DCs who will then come across like you.

Sugarnspicenallthingsnaice · 17/09/2026 11:12

I genuinely don't care what people wear on the plane or whether they have guts hanging out but I really wish there was a way to isolate myself from people who aren't 'refined' in their behaviour and manners.

I'm so sick of being stuck in a metal tube for hours with inconsiderate ferals who play crap out loud on their phones, piss all over the bathroom floors and infringe on my tiny bit of seat space (manspreading, hogging the armrest, grabbing my headrest, feet and knees in my back, feet up on the wall next to my seat, seat reclined all the way back during meals etc etc).

ReadBooksMorons · 17/09/2026 11:13

You are right. Dress standards have just tumbled over the decades until we are in the state you decsribe.

How do you know?

You would never go near them. Apparently.

shakeitoffoffoff · 17/09/2026 11:15

You'd be appalled at me and my husband, we dress for comfort regardless if we are travelling low cost or first. Our money is as good as yours.

There are also people out there who will be disappointed at your children being in the lounge, business or first class.

The solution to your problem is to charter your own aircraft and if you aren't prepared to do that for exclusivity, then you'll need to put up and shut up I'm afraid.

Matildatoldsuchdreadfullies · 17/09/2026 11:15

Well, if you didn’t use your private jet I really don’t know what you expected?

HotGrapefruit · 17/09/2026 11:18

Hahaha! Pretty sure you would consider me complete scum OP but I don't think you are being unreasonable. The British public has become quite vile. No sense of occasion for anything these days. YANBU.

ShutupLwren · 17/09/2026 11:19

The hunger games on a council estate 🤣

One of my fellow pleb friends took her family business class once and experienced a woman who held similar views to OP. Friend threatened her with violence as soon as she got off the plain. Chav may stand for council houses and violent, but the violence is a transferable skill.

Movingonup313 · 17/09/2026 11:19

Lots has changed about air travel and I dont necessarily like it. However lots has changed in society over the years. We are always evolving. Ive never seen comments like yours on aibu before. You must have known your highbrow wouldnt be favoured, or you are new - strange post and comments from a newbie.

Sunbringer · 17/09/2026 11:20

BABaby88 · 17/09/2026 10:45

Well quite.

I think emirates for us moving forward, unless you have a better recommendation?

EVA Air and Qatar have been my favourites so far.

WhosGotTheKeysToMyBimma · 17/09/2026 11:20

BABaby88 · 17/09/2026 10:44

Who are you?

I view any aircraft staff as worthy of dressing up for.

My mother started as cabin crew.

I have the utmost respect for cabin staff.

Is your mother Carole Middleton?

sandrapinchedmysandwich · 17/09/2026 11:20

GaaNeen · 17/09/2026 10:10

Wow
put them in third class / cattle crates,
so the elite don’t smell them

Exactly. Smacks of snobbery to me. As long as the 'great unwashed' were not shouting, swearing ir behaving antisocial lying, then wind your neck in. Travel should not just be for the 'elite'
