To think my kids can bark in their own garden....

....If my neighbour's dogs won't stop barking in theirs... I'm so sick of their rat-like, yappy dogs (no idea of the breed, but certainly non- pedigree) and it is destroying my mental health. A DM and her DD live next door but one with their dogs. I think the mum works shifts, but the Dd doesn't leave for work so I think she either works from home or is on benefits. The annoying ratty things just won't stfu and I have admittedly said some things I'm not proud of about the family and dogs in front of my kids in frustration.

My kids (DS1 12 and DS2 10) have been barking back at the dogs. I'm not saying it's right, they are by no means angels, but the barking is relentless. Earlier this evening, the DD started mouthing off and swearing at my kids in the garden, saying that they need to stop aggravating their dogs and making them bark because it's upsetting her mum- excuse me?!?! I responded by saying her dogs were barking first and that she needs to watch her mouth around my kids. Unfortunately, my DS1 shouted back that her dogs have rabies- she started screaming at my kids again and went inside. We were so terrified and had to hide upstairs in case she came to the front door. Should I report this woman and her dogs to the council? She looks rough and I'm concerned about what she will do while I'm at work as she evidently has lots of time on her hands.....

Have you ever discussed the noise from the dogs with them prior to this?

LuckyHazelFox · 16/09/2026 21:19

What an unpleasant thread.

Agree. Awful tone.

MrsPapillon · 16/09/2026 21:25

Would the barking be more tolerable if the dogs were KC registered?

Naurrr · 16/09/2026 21:27

You should've said they're extra large pitbulls 🍿

No one is coming across brilliantly in the original post.

Isittimeformynapyet · 16/09/2026 21:27

You are also barking.

Of course.

It proves that one isn’t a commoner.

BlueMum16 · 16/09/2026 21:31

You allow your kids to bark.

You yell at your neighbour.

You allow your kids to then yell at neighbor.

Then you hide upstairs because she might come round?

Quite. Does OP think KC registered dogs bark in a more….acceptable manner?

I know! OPs whole family are all bark and no bite.

JaneFoe · 16/09/2026 21:37

Good thread for filling today's bingo card... yappy non pedigree dogs, single mother, benefits, looks rough, OPs mental health, yelling at neighbours.
Can't say I've encountered 10 and 12 year old boys barking, there was a DH did it though.

NotSmallButFunSize · 16/09/2026 21:40

Tbh I don't judge you one bit - barking dogs can absolutely fuck off, annoying little twats

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 16/09/2026 21:54

I actually think that broadly YANBU

Some of your responses weren’t ideal but it doesn’t sound like they’re looking after their dogs well if they bark constantly - sounds like they’re not getting the attention they need.

ThunderThunderThunderThunderCats · 16/09/2026 22:05

“Non-pedigree” 🤨 GF.

Poppinpoppinpopcorn · 16/09/2026 22:13

I would be telling my kids to respect the dogs and not agrevate them. They are 10 and 12 not 4 year olds, they should understand how to respect animals by now.

alloutofcareunits · 16/09/2026 22:22

If the dogs are next door but one I pity the person living between the two of you

puppysleepdeprivation · 16/09/2026 22:37

Not the best idea to antagonise a rough-looking woman and her dogs, probably. There are better ways to go about dealing with this. Allowing your sons to bark at the dogs will only make the dogs bark more.

Also, some pedigreed dogs do look rather rat-like, not that the breeding of the dog makes any difference in this case.

Wobblewobblejelly · 17/09/2026 06:26

I don't mean to benefits bash btw as I used to be on the dole for a short period in my 20's....But she has really terrified me, I'm too scared to report her to the council, I'm really worried she will start on me or post something through my door....

Maybe you should have thought about that before you bad mouthed her loudly and encouraged your kids to mimic the barking dog. Dogs bark, children scream. Children do not bark.

beaglescurleduplikebagels · 17/09/2026 07:17

Well, you all sound thoroughly unpleasant so you’re probably suited to each other.

BCBird · 17/09/2026 07:18

I understand tge nightmare of noise. A yap is worse in my experience than a woof. The breed of the dog is surely irrelevant- pedigree dogs make a noise too.

hididdlyho · 17/09/2026 07:24

I mean technically, yes your kids should be able to bark in their own garden. However, it seems counter productive to wind the dogs up if their barking is pissing you all off. At 10 and 12 years old, they should be old enough to understand this. Also, an important lesson for your son is don't mouth off back to people who you fear may retaliate.

I'm not sure what you think the council will do in this situation.
