To think my kids can bark in their own garden....

....If my neighbour's dogs won't stop barking in theirs... I'm so sick of their rat-like, yappy dogs (no idea of the breed, but certainly non- pedigree) and it is destroying my mental health. A DM and her DD live next door but one with their dogs. I think the mum works shifts, but the Dd doesn't leave for work so I think she either works from home or is on benefits. The annoying ratty things just won't stfu and I have admittedly said some things I'm not proud of about the family and dogs in front of my kids in frustration.

My kids (DS1 12 and DS2 10) have been barking back at the dogs. I'm not saying it's right, they are by no means angels, but the barking is relentless. Earlier this evening, the DD started mouthing off and swearing at my kids in the garden, saying that they need to stop aggravating their dogs and making them bark because it's upsetting her mum- excuse me?!?! I responded by saying her dogs were barking first and that she needs to watch her mouth around my kids. Unfortunately, my DS1 shouted back that her dogs have rabies- she started screaming at my kids again and went inside. We were so terrified and had to hide upstairs in case she came to the front door. Should I report this woman and her dogs to the council? She looks rough and I'm concerned about what she will do while I'm at work as she evidently has lots of time on her hands.....

Maybe teach your kids how to deal with issues the right way.
either report her or live with it. You’ve pissed her off now so she’s not going to voluntarily make the dogs quiet.

FlapperFlamingo · 17/09/2026 07:32

Try an anti bark device - Amazon sell them. If it has a good line of sight to the dogs it can work well. No comment on your shenanigans though.

🤣🤣🤣🤣

Ridiculous carry on from you , your kids are 10 & 12 what kind of behaviour & conflict resolution are you teaching them. Grow up & be an adult. I'd much prefer to listen to the "yappy, no breed dogs" than your children.
At 10 & 12 your children should also know better. Also consider your wider neighbours who firstly had the dogs barking & now your 10 & 12 year old..
Model good behaviour & conflict resolution not antagonising & harrassing defenseless little dogs.

I don't mean to benefits bash btw as I used to be on the dole for a short period in my 20's....But she has really terrified me, I'm too scared to report her to the council, I'm really worried she will start on me or post something through my door....

It's fine to be scared. But your children's actions have escalated the issue.

The barking dogs WOULD be a nightmare. I have a neighbour who has dogs/other issues and creates more noise than the surrounding 30 or so other houses. But it's hard to take on without causing problems.

Sparrowsandbudgies · 17/09/2026 07:44

Whether she works or not or whether the dog is pedigree or not has no bearing on any of this. It’s just your own snobbery coming through.

You need to talk to them properly and if that gets you nowhere report them to the council for noise nuisance.

Your kids barking is likely to lead to the dogs barking more long term as it will make the dogs more anxious. Anxious dogs bark more.

RocketPanda · 17/09/2026 07:52

My IWH are purebred and bark in a plummy well brought up tone whereas the moggies snarl and spit like the freeloaders they are.

Anyhoo neither of you sound like good neighbours to the rest of the houses. Her with her barking dogs and you with your barking kids.

And to be honest I honest if I were the woman I would video the noise of your children's disgusting behaviour & say they were the cause of her dogs distress & upset.

You mentioned your 10 & 12 are "no angels". I'd love to hear the woman's side of this. If your children are barking at the dogs how do you not know they aren't doing more to upset the poor dogs?
At 10 & 12 your children should be enjoying extracurriculars, playing out with their friends, reading, going on trips with their parents.. how grim they spend their time barking at their neighbours dogs. What type of childhood memories are you creating?! Look at yourself & your "no angels " first.

Why did you benefits bash, then?

Annoyedbyhusband · 17/09/2026 08:02

Why did you hide upstairs terrified 😂
why can’t you just go and speak to them?
this would piss me off but ai wouldn’t deal with it like you have, you are escalating a situation and not going to get any resolution.

Flamingojune · 17/09/2026 08:03

I have been known to bark at yappy dogs on occasion

Cattyisbatty · 17/09/2026 08:06

My neighbour has a business relating to dogs puppies) - he often lets them out at 5am - so either you have to keep your windows closed on that side (DD’s room) or be woken up by them (occasionally I will sleep in the lounge due to health issues and it’s awful).

We are in an end terrace so he has houses on both sides - we were here before him and unfortunately he’s not renting (nor are we).

Unfortunately if you have an official neighbour dispute you’re legally obliged to declare it to potential buyers so we’ve held off from that, although we probably have a good case. We will def sell in the next few years so we can’t really do this.

Thry yap and bark in the day too but it’s not as bad as we’re not trying to sleep. Annoying if you’re trying to relax in the garden though and I have occasionally shouted ‘be quiet’ over the fence. Even he tells the dogs to ‘shut up’ ( his clients’ dogs, not his own).

if you’re not a homeowner I’d go through the proper channels, but I do sympathise greatly (don’t let your kids bark or antagonise her though).

Pinkgin00 · 17/09/2026 08:11

Yappy dogs are annoying as fuck, my neighbour has 2 jack russels and they go berserk everytime someone walks past the back gate, so I know how annoying it can be. To be fair to my neighbour, she always tell thems to shut up, but it is still annoying when I want to relax in the garden.

I have to say, my child (7) has never barked at them though..

Everanewbie · 17/09/2026 08:15

Yeah, if there is a problem with the dogs barking, winding them up even more will only exacerbate the issue. Your kids should be able to enjoy the garden within reason, but deliberately antagonising the dogs is something you should have stopped.

If the barking is a nuisance, take the high road. Allowing your kids to bark to make a point is just immature and people are unlikely to respond well.

Mistachio · 17/09/2026 08:17

If the dogs are barking and the owners won’t train them or bring them inside when they bark, then I’d tell your kids to have at it. Tell your neighbors that when they shut their dogs up you’ll shut your kids up.

Cherrysoup · 17/09/2026 09:02

Poor example to your dc. Go round, apologise for being so rude, ask if they can please stop the dogs barking. I was furious when the dc 2 doors down started barking at my puppies-they’re not supposed to bark (gun dogs) and I didn’t want to have noisy dogs annoying people in the street. Fortunately the dogs ignored them, but it was a really stupid thing for the kids to do, imo.

Whaleandsnail6 · 17/09/2026 09:12

What a ridiculous way of dealing with neighbour tensions.

Teach your kids that they are just escalating the situation. The dogs don't understand that the kids are barking at them because their barking is irritating.

You have made the situation worse and come across as extremely judgemental. Your ds sounds very cheeky and disrespectful in his interactions with neighbour, I'd love to hear your neighbours story of living next door to your family

She said herself the kids are "no angels" .. I'm shocked an woman would allow older kids behave like this. What a horrible childhood, they should be out playing with friends, reading, going to the park not stuck out back barking at the neighbours dogs.
Very strange behaviour from both the mother & the children.

Fidgety31 · 17/09/2026 09:46

You and your kids sound like neighbours from hell.

what on earth are you teaching your own children about how to manage challenging situations ?!
go and hide upstairs after causing trouble ?!

wow . Maybe reflect on your own parenting before criticising your neighbours doggy parenting !

beencaughttrollin · 17/09/2026 09:54

If barking is a problem, why would additional barking from other sources be an improvement, especially if it causes an escalation among the original barkers?

How can you report her household for a transgression that your household is also committing, by your own admission?

WinWhenTheyreSinging · 17/09/2026 10:17

Why on earth did you have to hide upstairs, do your doors not work to keep people out downstairs? Are they Daleks who can get in downstairs, but can’t follow you upstairs?🤣

Supportbritishfarmers · 17/09/2026 10:22

Your kids are literally barking at dogs and she is the one who looks rough? Brilliant 🤣🤣

Hoppinggreen · 17/09/2026 10:24

I am glad I don't live near any of you

CurlewKate · 17/09/2026 10:35

I would absolutely not allow my children to wind up an animal-however annoying that animal was.

MrMucker · 17/09/2026 10:36

Well the starting point is the dog, isn't it?
Take the arsey yappy dog out of the equation and none of this would have happened.

Pet-centric gas lighting away from that fact is occurring a lot in this thread. It's (another) sad day for the human race. I'm sorry, OP.
