To wonder if Jesus Christ is swearing

So the people who lived at the same time as Jesus and/or those who had known him and in the next decades were clearly just fools making up silly fairy tales about him; but you - living 2,000 years later - are an expert in knowing for sure what he would have said or done?!

So you're punishing the vast majority who find the abuse equally abhorrent as you do, in an attempt to get back at the people who claim faith but in reality act repeatedly and determinedly in ways that are completely opposed to what the faith and its scriptures teach - and so are unlikely to actually care anyway?

I don't use it but till this thread I had no idea it was offensive (but English is not my first language and my family aren't Christians). Very grateful to have learnt this today before I inadvertently offend someone.

Both DH and me swear once in a while and DD always told us off for it so we tried to cut it down. I think we have pretty badly failed at that though as recently DD said "what the fuck" when missing the ball in a game. She was as surprised as the rest of us.. strictly no more swearing for DH and me!!

Yes, it’s swearing and, as a Christian, I do find it offensive when people use Jesus’ name as a swear word. But I do accept that others who are not Christians don’t see it that way, and often aren’t intending to be offensive.

You're not really making sense. I wouldn't call my child a swear word, but if someone kept invoking LIKELY SUSPECT when they banged their knee or dropped a glass how would it bother me? Incidentally, I worked with someone whose name was Shiti and pronounced Shitty.

Less than 50% declare themselves christian in England and even amongst that proportion there will be a range of uptightness about it especially as less than 10% actually go to church...

I agree. It's really common in Ireland for people raised as Catholics.

I think that it's most common in religions cultures actually. Hence very very common in Ireland.

Surely it would work the other way around - with a pregnant woman claiming to be a virgin being dismissed as a liar/promiscuous or worse... and anything to put the blame on her than on any man?

It isn’t swearing but it is considered impolite culturally in the UK. It is also disrespectful to those who are Christian.

It is pretty standard statement of anything here in Ireland. Jesus Mary and the carpenter being another. It is blasphemy technically although that was only a criminal offence here till 2020!

I'm guessing that it's common for people with a nominal/cultural background in those religions, but not actually amongst the people who have a strong faith. It would be like a committed vegan telling everybody how much they love eating meat.
