To wonder if Jesus Christ is swearing

Because I exclaimed OH JESUS CHRIST in frustration today on the school run. Not my finest moment and I will admit that; it had not been a good morning, lots of stress here and my younger child nearly tipped me over the edge demanding to be carried and blocking everyone’s way on the very narrow pavement, picked her up, dropped everything else I was carrying and said the above.

We have had a message about bad language in front of the children and I feel like it’s aimed at me.

Yes, most people would regard this as swearing. It may offend Christians in particular.

It's inappropriate around children (there's a good chance that at least one will think it's a marvellous phrase and repeat it in school, particularly if you said it very dramatically) - and can be very offensive to people who have that faith.

Just use your Around Other Parents voice - you know, the one where you actually say 'Oh, for fuck's sake, what the fuck are you doing now, why can't you just stop fucking whingeing for five fucking minutes, I'm trying my fucking best here and you're not fucking helping' inside your head, but outwardly you fix your face so nobody can tell you're right at the end of your patience by 8.45am.

Well the bible does say not to take the Lord’s name in vain. Is the school a church school, in which case they may feel particularly bound to comment?

I absolutely detest passive aggressive complainers.

People who won’t say things to your face but make a song and dance and have a generic whinge to the world at large, can get to fuck as far as I’m concerned.

Try saying “Jesus, Mary and Joseph” next time. I’m sure that will help. 😂

P.S. DS went to a Catholic school and you should have heard the language from some of the parents, but then I live in Ireland and we don’t really give a feck.

It's not swearing. It's blasphemy. Blasphemy can only be offensive to believers so you didn't swear but you did do it in a highly inappropriate setting.

I'mnever sure if blasphemy counts as swearing. It's certainly language to be used when aware of your audience.

I guess in a religious setting it could be seen as inappropriate, but I love a good ‘Jesus Christ!’. Very satisfying.

Interesting. What is “swearing”? Subjective surely. If there’s an approved list of swear words, it hasn’t been circulated to me.

I simply wouldn’t waste my time trying to work out if the school newsletter was vague-dropping me. If it’s serious enough to need my attention, they can tell me directly.

I would avoid yelling Jesus Christ in front of small children that aren’t mine on the basis that most parents won’t want their child repeating this. I wouldn’t beat myself up over it if it slipped out though, it’s not like you called a six year old a cunt or anything.

I’m atheist but I really don’t like it. My teens think I’m ridiculous and it’s not swearing. I’m no stranger to a for fuck’s sake at all either.
