AIBU to be upset after a dog jumped at our baby?

Okay, so myself, DH and baby were at a country park the other week. Baby was getting hungry so we sat ourselves down on a park bench and got some food out. A woman was walking with her family and dog and the dog must’ve smelt the food as it suddenly
comes bounding over and is jumping at baby (who is on DH knee) to get the food. We don’t know this dog and don’t know what it's capable of. I scream at the owner that we have a baby and to get her dog under control. At this point, she’s pretty far away and is taking her time to come over. My DH then kicks the dog to get it off them as it just will not stop. The woman wasn’t particularly apologetic and seemed shocked. Did we overreact?

I can't believe people are giving you are hard time about this OP! A dog no matter of the breed was jumping up at a baby uncontrolled! It could have hurt the baby even if it didn't mean to! Its the owners fault and the reactions were justified and needed to protect the baby from potiental harm. Dogs should not be off the lead if they invade others personal space and can't be controlled and saftey of a baby is far more important than an out of control dog getting a deserved kick maybe it wont do it next time now and the owner will have learnt a lesson

The dog made contact with my baby several times with its paws before my DH could use his body to shield the baby. Having a 80lb dog jump up at an infant is dangerous full stop. It doesn’t need to be snarling or bearing its teeth. It was a threat to us and we acted accordingly.

Exactly! As an adult I've been raked down both legs by a dog's nails. A lovely friendly dog. I like dogs. I'm an ex-vet nurse. It bloody hurt and the marks bled & I had rips in my trousers. Why would anyone risk that happening to their baby's fragile body and face?? A few of the people on this thread show the exact problem with shit dog owners today. Dogs should be on leads around picnic areas/play parks or under very strict control. My DC old infant teacher is hugely allergic to cats and dogs. I bumped into her a month ago in my village. She told me it's got so bad with off-lead dogs just everywhere since lockdown she feels she can barely go for a walk anymore. Why do we have to pander to (some) dog owners?

I don't think yourself is unreasonable to be upset.

I just feel like this post deserves a bigger highlight.

Yes, I’m also highlighting that OP is not being unreasonable. Obviously it depends on the exact nuance on exactly how bad this situation was. But I’m fed up with dogs running up to people - when you’re sitting down with food (if you’re uncertain around dogs) it feels vulnerable enough. But add a baby to the mix and it’s a different matter.

The police!! You must be joking. It was a poorly trained dog wanting some food. It can be scary for someone not used to animals but please.

let them call the police and be summarily ignored. It might be the only way.

It's awful how much people hate animals and how little tolerance they have for them these days.

There are animals in the world. Get over it.

It's not wrong to want to use a park bench to have some food without having to manage a strangers dog.

Seriously?! My son’s cake was licked just a month ago. I personally think it’s ok not to expect to have your space invaded like that in a park. We don’t all think it’s cute when your fur baby invades our actual baby’s space.

Another post to cause divide… surely you must know the answer… I am a dog person and have a baby too. You screamed? Your husband licked the dog. Gosh are just as vile as the woman who didn’t have her dog under control.

Vile for being frightened? Given all the press about horrendous dogs attacks these days it's very difficult to know who is or isn't a responsible owner because so many aren't! Blame all the horrors stories of killings of people and other dogs and kids getting tore up! That's why everyone is on heightened alert! Calling a mother vile for being scared what the dog might do is you being a bad person to be honest.

I think if you’re not dog savvy, this kind of thing can escalate into the panic it did. Whereas we would just grab the dog, or just stand up with the baby, give it a pet and hold it till owner came, because despite what you read on MN, the vast majority of dogs aren’t interested in mauling babies and don’t need to be kicked or hurt.

But people who aren’t used to dogs will often react like this (which is ironically more likely to cause a dog to harm you, shrieking and kicking at it and causing panic, rather than just calmly getting hold of collar or crouching down and getting hold of them, calling them to you).

The owner should have quickly spotted this unfolding and hurried over to intervene when it was clear what way it was going.

How the hell is that statement relevant when the context is about people's dogs! The amount of dog attacks on people and other dogs is at an all time high and you don't get it? I live near popular walking spot and where as I have had many lovely sweet dogs come up to me for a pat, I've also had the growlers that scare me because the owners are 30 metres away whilst their dog is snarling and barking at me. Two women stood having a conversation in the middle of the pavement the other day and both their dogs lurched at me and started kicking off as I went passed so I was relieved they were on leads. Dogs have been attacked on the walking spot near me too, and that includes a sweet dog not on a lead that went to an aggressive dog that was on a lead and ended up at the vets!

Small chikdren are in severe danger around dogs; severe danger from attack. Dogs perceive small children as ' other dogs' so will most likely spar. with them. I would have LOVED to be YOU in this situation as I'm a big lover of poetic justice. I would have relished unleashing my anger in this situation. GOOD ON YOU!!!!!!!!!

Well interestingly I did contact the police yesterday as someone else in the park had photographed the lady and the dog. They asked for my number and sent it over after they saw what happened. Didn’t think much of it at the time as I didn’t feel the need to. Luckily I also photographed the scratch the dog caused and that’s time stamped. So they are trying to identify the dog and owner and are going to follow it up with me. They told me that that was unacceptable and they take matters like this very seriously. I wasn’t exactly expecting that but there you go. So I did what you asked.

I change my stance now somewhat after reading your updates and realising the dog actually made contact with your baby- that is not on and if kicking it was the only way to get it off, then absolutely get why you would.
Must have been really scary! And appreciate any dog regardless of breed can be dangerous for such a young child.

Absolutely it was scary. I was concerned the dog might bite or even knock my baby out
of my DH’s arms. I didn’t notice that the incident had left a scratch on my baby until later. It wasn’t a small dog either, not that that should matter.

Well the police don’t seem to think so and are now following it up. A witness sent me a photograph of the woman and the dog after it happened, so hopefully it should be getting sorted.

Sorry but a public park isn't "your space". You have to share it with others, and occasionally other people, children, and animals will be annoying. As a pp mentioned upthread - also beware of the seagulls!!

If you say so! I'm sure this will be a priority for police time and there will be lots of criminal consequences. Do keep us updated.

This post is so preposterous I think you are trolling @Lacksie

The idea that sharing public spaces means tolerating bad behaviour is clearly bollocks.

What’s weird to me is that you said that the police wouldn’t care less and within 12 hours (bearing in mind I sent the email off late) of my sending over the photographs and describing what happened they have contacted me, taken my account, have taken the number of the witness, and told me what the next steps are and what the law is on something like this. You’ve been proven wrong and yet you’re still going on as if you were proven right! You explicitly said that the police wouldn’t careless. That’s been shown to be incorrect. And I won’t keep you updated as this Thread had a deadline of 3 days. You’re in denial and it shows.

Last time I checked, nobody is the owner of a seagull.

Unreasonable to kick the dog? Absolutely! Push it away, NEVER kick!

I can assure you I'm really not trolling.

Obviously dog owners should make every effort to ensure their dogs don't bother other people, in the same way that parents make sure their kids don't.

But kids are kids and animals are animals and despite everyone's best efforts their behaviour isn't perfect or predictable at all times. Sometimes you will encounter them in public spaces and occasionally they might be slightly bothersome. That is the reality of sharing public spaces.

I'm genuinely so bloody sick of the lack of tolerance people show towards animals (and towards small kids with SEN but that's a topic for another day).
