To think we can't afford the triple lock

Things seem very weighted against young people right now in terms of tax, student loans, and then there's the cost of mortgages and childcare. I know there are some older people struggling and I do feel sorry for them. But plenty are not and I think we just can't afford the triple lock at the moment. AIBU

Again we have automatic enrollment now since 2012. Honestly no excuse to have no private savings or pot whatsoever

This is why we're so screwed in the face of non-democracies like China. So many people with no economic literacy spouting opinions (often borrowed from the Daily Mail).

You realise that the triple lock isn’t applicable to private pensions?

Of course! What are you on about?

Differentforgirls · 16/09/2026 07:38

No they are a reward for all the years of austerity when they got SFA. It essentially to make up for years of pay cuts.

They got less because their employer - the state - was skint. Guess what their employer - the state pension won’t- is still skint and yet we see ludicrous pay rises with the taxpayer expected to pick up the bill. Whereas in the private sector, where they have to actually make the number add up, the pay rises are far more restrained.

I've got 45 years NI paid, and have worked full time since leaving university, including 16 years as a single mum. During that time I have required no benefits, bought us a home, and been a net contributor since I was 26.

Made redundant at 63, I am now supporting ds at university as he trains as an engineer and becomes (hopefully) another net contributor to society. When he graduates, I will sell our home, downsize and give him the difference as a deposit for him to buy a home. I have another 4 years until I can claim my state pension which will be a huge £12k p.a. As a lower middle income pensioner I'm not sure I have any more to give.

The pension will rise by £488 in April or £9.38 a week. That won't cover the increase in council tax, food and house insurance.

I'd create a third level of tax for anyone with an income over £200k including earnings, pensions, capital gains, dividends, interest etc. That would mean high earners and very wealthy pensioners would contribute more.

First sensible suggestion!

It’s great creating higher tax brackets once you are out of the workplace isn’t it.

Ideology ahead of practical ability and reality is killing this country.

This article is incredibly good. I appreciate it is the Telegraph but it's a really good summary of what it calls the 4 horseman of the apocalypse arriving at once for the global economy.

This isn't right wing bullshit of an article. It's factual in stating where things are rather than what we need to do or what it thinks we should do.

Envy.

It’s not envy it’s just state sponsored stupidity. I’m in Scotland where the government awarded NHS pay rises so big that this year’s increase in NHS funding has been entirely swallowed up by funding pay rises. There is no money for improving services. NHS England is not in this situation because it didn’t roll over to each and every pay demand and services there are improving as a result.

It would be nice if we had politicians that could think these things through but hey, that’s the SNP for you.

We have gutless politicians who fear being voted out so like to pretend everything is affordable when it’s not because they don’t like making unpopular decisions, and the shit is starting to hit the fan. You cannot run the country on vibes alone.

Envy.

It's pretty reasonable to be envious of the people whose wages you pay getting bigger pay rises than you do.

Pensioners get £1k a month. How much lower do you want it to be? If they were working, that wage would equate to £6 an hour!

I have paid NI since I was 16 - that's 40 years I've paid so far, and I will be paying for at least another 15 years. Anyone saying they want to reduce the pension I get, can GET TO FUCK.

You should be more concerned about the fact that dole dossers receive Pension Credit, and that is £3 a week less than someone who has paid NI for several decades. Now that gives me the RAGE !!!!!!!

You also need to appreciate that Pensioners prop up lots of economies, because they get out there and spend.

The Mail wins awards year after year for its financial reporting. You don't actually read it, do you?

The Guardian can be far more illiterate about how national and international finance actually works.

No no no! No one (almost, anyway) wants the state pension to be lower!!! Many simply want to temper the best of all worlds increase mechanism.

Honestly it may get to food tokens if the crisis hits full on. There will not be capacity for a pension. Other places in the world ARE about to face famine next year. Read the sodding news properly.

We are looking at the return of levels of poverty we haven't seen in decades.

No one is getting it yet.

We are absolutely fucked.

Read the article @RedToothBrush linked. Swallow your indoctrinated opinion that the Telegraph is a conservative mouthpiece, and be very afraid. Because it is happening and there isn't anywhere to hide.

You know the concept of something like envy being a sin was thought up to control people, don't you?

Envy is an emotion caused by hormones and created by situations that are often unfair. It works both ways and can often produce positive change.

The fact is that the public sector is paid for by taxes generated by the private sector and by borrowing against the productivity of the private sector, so there are bound to be questions when public sector pay rises by more than private sector pay.

Alex Wickham AT Alexwickham

Exclusive: UK household energy bills are forecast to jump by about 25% in January as the Iran war drives up gas and electricity prices, according to analysis by Bloomberg Economics

The coming price spike means UK inflation could climb above 4% next year, double the BoE target, the analysis finds

The Ofgem energy price cap is expected to rise by about £427 to around £2,150 a year for the average household, according to the forecasts

This would push bills close to the £2,500 cap brought in by the government following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022

It’s a major threat to Andy Burnham’s pledge to be the cost-of-living prime minister

Martin Lewis is also sounding the same alarm bells on the Energy Cap. That well known political partisan and economic illiterate Martin Lewis.

Wake up.

We are having the wrong conversations. We should be having conversations about the very most basics and we can not afford to do more even if we are dyed in the wool left wing socialist types.

The economic situation is THAT bad going into winter 2026/2027.

If you aren't worried at this point, frankly you should be.

I’m sure I paid tax myself while working for the LA. In fact, I still do!
