To think we can't afford the triple lock

paddleboardingmum · 15/09/2026 08:47

Things seem very weighted against young people right now in terms of tax, student loans, and then there's the cost of mortgages and childcare. I know there are some older people struggling and I do feel sorry for them. But plenty are not and I think we just can't afford the triple lock at the moment. AIBU

Rather a sidetrack though. Doesn't change the fact that the UK's economy will continue to decline as people continue to extract their gravy.

Nor does it change the fact that if that causes an exodus from London, such that it becomes a normal capital, that will accelerate the decline in wealth for everyone in the whole UK.

But so many people just think of themselves. Take the £100k tax trap thread. If we gave everyone a personal allowance and child benefit, we’d raise more in tax than it costs because it would stop all of the jiggery-pokery that goes on to avoid it currently. And yet we can’t have it politically because those on less are so damn jealous of ‘the wealthy’. But these sort of changes are needed if we are ever to get growth again in this country.

So what’s the capital of the UK?

in your opinion?

There are three.

myjamisbetterthanyours · 19/09/2026 07:59

Kotyss · 19/09/2026 07:52

London factually is the capital

Of course.

I was wondering about the opinion of the poster who claimed it wasn’t.

If you could just admit that you, as a ex-LA worker who was able to retire early, has a pretty good deal, it would do you more credit than arguing you have paid into your pension and conveniently forgetting how much the LA paid in.
I don't know what you did at the LA, but i would hazard a guess that unless you were very high level, you would have been paid at least as much as a comparable job in the private sector. If not more.
You obvioulsy have paid into your pension. We all do. But however much you argue, there's no getting away from the fact that LA and public sector pensions are WAY more generous than private sector. And as they are effectively funded by taxpayers, need a fundamental reform to bring them in line.
'Race to the bottom' doesn't adress this point.

You should be wanting private sector workers to have better pensions.

I think it was an attempt to divert from the public sector pensions posts 😁

Summerlovingtheraspberries · 19/09/2026 08:03

I don’t want life to be hard for anyone.
However, it should be a lot more comfortable for those who have paid into the system.
If that means taking less from those who contribute and giving less to those who don’t, then I’m all for it.
Let’s not pretend that everyone who does not pay into the system is deserving.
Plenty of people get a free house whilst others struggle and have to live in shared accommodation. Unfortunately, this is hardly ever down to what you pay into the system.
Many, many working people don’t qualify for a free house. Let’s face it. If you don’t work and live in a house then it is a free house. Plus all the extra goodies you can tap into such as not paying full council tax.
The problem as I see it is this:
We have a kind of half and half system.
We are neither fully capitalist such as the USA. Or socialist like many Scandinavian countries. By that I mean we have a ‘free at source’ health care system but, it isn’t funded appropriately. Scandinavian countries receive better childcare benefits, but they pay more tax. It’s difficult to make the changes here as everyone thinks they are entitled to free services, whilst expecting others to pay for it.
I think we need to make deep changes and start making people pay more for what they use.
We cannot continue as we are.
The real problem is when do you start?
Cutting the tripple lock will devastate certain sections of society and affect them very disproportionately.
I certainly would not vote for that. I will be relying on my state pension when I retire, despite paying into a private pension.
The Tory government allowed my private pension provider to change the terms and conditions of what I signed up for. I will receive much less than I signed up for. So absolutely no way in hell will I vote for a reduction in my state pension. That’s if I manage to live that long.
People vote for themselves, that is the bottom line.

It wasnt. You can rage all day about it but you would be more productive asking why the private sector pay such poor pensions. You can't pull yourself up by pulling others down. We all have choices. I chose to work in Local Government.

Chanberry · 19/09/2026 08:06

If boomers could take their money with them when they die, they would. 😂 Honestly, the most money-hungry, materialistic generation in history.

We as a country should not sustain public sector pensions at their current level. There is no justification for them whatsoever.
It's very nice for you to be able to potter around at largely the taxpayers' expense but surely you can see scaling these back is an obvious way to trim costs?

But you can say "The way our society is organised isn't right, and I want to change it now"

That's what politics is all about.

It's not the boomers complaining about being hard done by.

My pension is funded by LG employees.

There are four capital cities in the UK, but only London is the capital of the UK.

Any facts to back this up of is it just spite?

I have to say, I agree with the challenge. I don't think Boomers are unusually greedy - they've just had a very lucky run.

With free tax. Lucky them to have never paid any.

Yes, so you are one of the many taxpayers funding the public sector

That doesn't change that the entire public sector is funded by the taxpayer. All of them. Not only the public sector ones.

They, as a demographical group, voted for political parties offering tax cuts, windfalls from privatisations and demutualisations, selling off council houses, Brexit.

I would say (just an opinion) that today's younger generation are the first to expect the same assets as people who have built them up over decades and seem to think they are the first workers to be funding state pensions for retired people.

And you think that was deliberate? And younger voters will not do the same if it helps them?
People like to think they are clever enough to see the big picture, but ultimately, everyone votes for themselves.
You need go no further than planning laws to see that. Everyone wants more housing but not near them
