AIBU to set up a new fundraising page after charity collapse?

I’m training for a marathon for charity - I was doing this for Papyrus in memory of my daughters friend who committed suicide earlier this year.

I’ll admit, I’ve partly thrown myself into it because I’ve found it really difficult to deal with what’s happened, and doing something positive helped me cope with the grief. I’ve run on days I’ve not wanted to, I’ve run in tears, I’ve pushed and pushed myself forward because I wanted to raise money to make a difference.

Papyrus went into administration last week. All of my donations have vanished fromJust Giving - hundreds of £s. My entire page has vanished. Looks like donations are with the administration company, as unknown to me, Just Giving transfer donations weekly, despite my event not happening yet. Just Giving can’t actually tell me what’s happened - I was hoping they could refund my donors and I could ask my donors to donate to a new fundraising page (not set this up yet - still waiting for an answer from Just Giving)

As far as I was aware, if I cancelled my event I had the ability to refund donors. So I am unsure as to why my charity no longer being in existence means my donors money disappears. Just seems wrong to me.

I’m now weeks off my event with no donations. I was doing all of this in the hope that my donation would make a difference to somebody. I feel like I’ve just thrown a load of my friends and family’s donations at administrators. I’ve nothing to show from my effort. I was so proud of myself. Now im just like - what’s the point!!!

Would I be unreasonable to set up a new Just Giving page and send this round to everyone? I feel ridiculous sending a link around again Obviously wouldn’t expect people who have donated to donate again, unless we can get Just Giving to refund them

I'm sorry OP, I can see why your feeling completely deflated by this. It's really unfair but I think the money may be lost if justgiving already transferred it. I think if the event is cancelled the refund is reliant on the charity refunding (like you I assumed the money was held until afterwards). I don't think there's anything wrong with setting up a new page and explaining to folk, but I would have a think first about whether it'll make you feel even worse if donations on this are much lower. I know this will feel empty words right now, but you have done something positive by raising awareness and helping reduce the stigma by making it a more open topic of conversation rather than hiding away. I hope your daughter is doing ok and you enjoy the marathon regardless, it's a very impressive achievement even without the sponsorship.

This is awful. I am so sorry for you op. I didn't realise just giving worked like that and I bet others didn't. Could you contact your MP? Mine has been helpful in the past.
