AIBU to think my son should not charge friends for lifts?

Hi there, I need some advice on this.
Little bit of backstory, my son is 17 years old, and has just got his driving license. He’s always been an outstanding individual, very generous and kind. He has been driving himself to college recently, and we were proud of him for willingly going out of his way to bring his friends to school (instead of making them take the bus).

What we’ve recently discovered is that he’s implemented a flat-rate fee, charging his friends slightly shy of £1 per ride to college.

Both my husband and I agree that this is ethically corrupt. My son thinks it’s his car and he can do what he wants.

Any advice?

OP - you should ask him to give you the money.

leavesinthebreeze · 14/09/2026 14:35

Op - pay whatever it costs to get him to and from college (if you can afford to) and anything over that he pays himself.

Did you RTFT? Mummy and daddy pay for petrol and lil Alan Sugar here is putting his "mates" in the boot of his car!

Did you Believe TFT!

No he shouldn't. He's over filling his car and putting people in the boot. He's getting his petrol paid for as well

He's over filling his car and putting people in the boot.

Or is he? 🤔

Do they charge folk and shove them in the boot too

You keep saying "shove".

I think young people are capable of climbing into a car boot all on their own.

You don't need to use escalatory words you know.

Agree with you and @Tillow4ever

Am wondering if this is the same poster that, yesterday, started the "Cat drama: DS17 vs DM with dementia" thread. 🤷

Laurmolonlabe · 14/09/2026 14:48

Point out to him that as he has no PSV licence he cannot legally charge.

I'm not using anything escalatory. Im Scottish. I might use a certain turn of phrase where other people wouldn't. Is some random person out there going to be upset that I used the word shove rather than " politely asked Tarquin to climb into the boot " particularly when it's likely that the entire scenario is completely made up?

What's going to escalate from me using the word shove? Protests in Trafalgar Square?

Mumsnet coming to a standstill?

LilyBunch25 · 14/09/2026 15:44

With the price of fuel rising every day not to mention insurance costs etc I think he's sensible and also very cheap!

So you're accepting that this could all be nonsense then after getting so involved in telling everyone "but he shoved his friends in the boot!" (not a verbatim quote btw)

Your style uses dysphemism, which adds a negative slant to a neutral action. So "his friends even travel in the boot" (which is bad enough) becomes "he shoves his friends in the boot", so you've added an unnecessary aggression.

Much as you would love to believe I only know Tarquins and Jaspers (because you're Scottish?) plenty of pp can see (from your multiple posts) that you don't really post in good faith - you seem very keen to get under people's skin for some reason.

RumPidgeon · 14/09/2026 15:56

I think that’s more than fair. Cheaper than the bus and quicker than walking. I paid over £2 per litre at the pump yesterday - I feel like charging my kids 😂

Is that right? Maybe what you could do is ......scroll on by. The reference to Tarquin wasn't me believing that you only know Tarquins and Jasper's. It was the first thing I thought of. Nice to see that you've done an advanced search to look at my posts. I really could not care less.

I'm not really sure why you needed to make this an issue in the first place.

I didn't mention the name Jasper either. You're the person making a mountain out of a molehill. In my view.

Sorry all, I missed the fact that we bought the car and cover petrol and he’s also letting his friends get in the trunk.

Should he charge reduced rates for the boot?

😂

That has to be a wind up

HereComesTheNight · 14/09/2026 15:59

No new driver should be taking passengers.
Aside from that it's enterprising. One of my DC friends used to do similar for nights out. He didn't drink and would do lifts ( we live in a village no taxi would come to).

However I don't actually believe it because of the boot thing.

With the Tarquin thing, you were trying to deflect by insinuating that I'm unpleasantly posh and privileged. I'm not, but I do have a decent vocabulary.

I have not done an advanced search - I clicked see all by yourgoldlurker and I'm referring only to your posts on this thread.

I don't believe you don't care.

JuicyOrange1980 · 14/09/2026 16:14

Totally normal amongst teens and totally fair in my opinion. Friends are saving money on buses and your DS is getting a bit towards fuel. Why should your son bear the full cost of his friends getting to college and they get free transport? It’s Win win! And very much the done thing, certainly where we live.

Theyreeatingthedogs · 14/09/2026 16:20

You have very strange ethics. Have you never given someone petrol money for a lift?

Strange use of words. Petrol is British. Trunk is American. Is this an AI wind up?

Fast800goingforit · 14/09/2026 16:34

Tillow4ever · 14/09/2026 10:52

@YourGoldLurkeryou seem massively invested in this thread, replying to so many people to point out the “fact” he’s putting his mates in the boot. You haven’t seemed to twig that it’s VERY unlikely to be true. Either the OP didn’t like the responses on the thread so added something in to turn the tide OR it’s a completely bullshit thread in the first place. Possibly being used to train AI.

Did you not think it was odd that the OP used £ but then referred to a “trunk” and then switched to “boot”? Almost like an American AI forgot it was pretending to be British for a moment.

And if this were real, do you really think any parent would come online and ask if it’s ok that their kid is charging to give their friends lifts, but not even mention that they’re in the boot of the car too until they’ve had a number of responses? If you’re a parent, would you be more concerned with your child putting their friends in the boot, or charging them for fuel money?

Using a bit of critical thinking is always a good idea.

I reported this thread hours ago and the massive drip feed about mates in trunk/boot seemed 1. Unlikely; 2. Surely the thing a responsible parent would be bothered about above the son charging for lifts. Apparently MNHQ are enjoying the ridiculousness think there's nothing untoward.

Blanknotebook · 14/09/2026 16:55

It seems like his friends are getting a good deal, but would it affect his car insurance or invalidate his policy if he had an accident with paying passengers?

beencaughttrollin · 14/09/2026 17:01

He should not be allowing his friends to ride in the trunk. In addition to temporarily obstructing their vision and hearing and risking getting their clothing and hair sticky, it is tremendously irritating and potentially dangerous for the elephant.

thatwasclose · 14/09/2026 17:04

This is almost certainly against his insurance rules. I suggest he reads up on his policy.

Just a small detail you forgot to mention there....

Futurehappiness · 14/09/2026 17:44

If your concern is that your DS is profiteering by charging his friends for costs you are covering anyway, then you could try clawing back the money from him and see how that goes down.

I don't think it amounts to corruption though. It is quite an abrupt character reversal: from 'outstanding, generous and kind' to 'ethically corrupt'.

If he is stuffing his friends into the boot of his car, I think he & you have much bigger issues.

Don't say stuffing. You'll be accused of being aggressive like I was when I used the word shove.
