FIL terrible bad breath

Right here goes, I am a long time lurker but this is the first post I have made, I do not know what to do, maybe it’s just me and you can be honest!

My FIL has truely awful bad breath. Its always been the same all the years I’ve known him which must be getting on 15 years now. I promise this is no exaggerated , but when he has visited, we have to open the window afterwards as it fills a room. My MIL is fully aware but always defends him as he’s unfortunately very much “man of the house” MIL panders to him, apparently he refuses to see dentist (me and DH have tried on a few occasion to talk to her about it when he is not around, in a sensitive way. She says she hates it but is power less to do anything about it as she obviously can’t make him visit a dentist, his teeth are rotten we don’t even think he brushes them) I don’t know how she puts up with it.

The issue is this, due to the distances apart we live from them, visits to them and from them are usually a couple of days long to make the journey worthwhile and to spend time with each other. Couple of years ago they moved to a small retirement property and it meant there was room for us to stay, huge relief to be honest, we stay in local hotel now. Up until few months ago, we did not have the room to have them stay with us and they would always stay at a local guest house.

However this year we’ve moved house and have a spare room….! And unfortunately.. they have assumed it will be ok to stay in it when they visit next month.

We have tried a lot of things to discourage them, we are not far away from where we used to live so the guest house is still pretty close, we have offered to pay for them to stay there as an “early Christmas present “ but no they are insisting on staying with us.

I don’t know what to do, I do not want them staying here, nor does DH.

My DH has a chat with his parents last week and tried to help them see all the benefits of still using the guest house (FIL is volatile at times and he have to tread carefully), I was here but not in the same room but could hear what was being said, , DH put his foot down said that he and I really would prefer you both to stay at the guest house, I think it will be more relaxing for all of us that way.. we were very surprised that they agreed to this initially, great we thought, very relieved,,

Sadly though, the following day my MIL called my DH and said that my FIL has obv taken great offence to this as my MIL ended up telling him the reason we don’t want them to stay in the house and my FILs words were “well this is me I’m not changing”!! And said that we either let them stay in our home or they won’t visit again, nor are we welcome in their home

In case I have not got the point across as to exactly how bad the problem is, we have been out and about on trips with them and seeing people visibly recoil at the smell when he opens his mouth.

I don’t know what to do to sort the situation out because I don’t want to fall out with them but at the same time I cannot bear the thought of him staying in the house?

You’ll have to fall out. Or have them stay. No in between with this situation.

I really hate that we are in this position because I don’t actually want my Dh to fall out with his parents but we both feel we need to stand firm on this

Just flat out tell him, at this point you have nothing to lose.

He knows! I feel very sad that it’s basically I’ve have to put up with having my personal space invaded in this way, or we don’t have a relationship with them !

Right, well tell him he's not welcome unless he sorts it out.
What's the alternative really?

Franjipanl8r · 14/09/2026 01:48

I’d invite him to stay and leave a hamper full of dental hygiene products on the bed plus book him in for a trip to the dentist during his stay!

It’s tempting believe me but I doubt he’d use them!

He’s terrified of dentistry but needs to have it explained to him the significant effects of poor oral hygiene on his overall health. That might spur him on, with everyone’s support and an understanding dentist, to do something about his decaying teeth, plaque and halitosis.

Gardenialover · 14/09/2026 05:49

Wrt my previous post-I’ve assumed he can find a dentist and afford treatment!

Nofeckingway · 14/09/2026 06:03

Well he has given you his ultimatum . And why would you want him to visit anyway Can DH mother come by herself ? No way would I give in to this . It's disgusting to inflict this level of hygiene on anyone and expect them to just accept it .

thepariscrimefiles · 14/09/2026 06:13

I assume that he has got gum disease from years of poor or non-existent dental hygiene. There is a link between gum disease and a higher risk of developing dementia so he is foolish to categorically refuse to visit a dentist.

You are certainly not being unreasonable. I have worked with people with terrible bad breath and it's absolutely awful. The fact that other people recoil in digust when your FIL opens his mouth shows that this is an extreme case of bad breath that needs treating by a dentist.

Don't give in and let them say in your house. It will be unbearable for everyone except your FIL.

sunnyhoneybumblebee · 14/09/2026 06:24

Gosh what a bad situation. Accept his ultimatum and make arrangements to see your MIL on her own, it’s extremely selfish of him to act like this.

or….. You could send him your own ultimatum. Kindly explained you both care about him and you want to see them both but you simply can’t tolerate the smell and offer suggestions around supporting a trip to the dentist. If he doesn’t engage , well you tried. I honestly wouldn’t be able to be around him, this would be my worst nightmare !

I think he’s just a disgusting slob. I was terrified of going to the dentist for many years but when did pluck up the courage to go the dentist told me he believed I had a phobia of the dentist because my mouth was beautifully clean. He told me people who have a genuine phobia take steps to prevent visits and practice very good dental hygiene daily. The same dentist then got me over my phobia and now I don’t think twice about going to the extent I chose to have a dental implant done rather than have a temperamental crown replaced.

A filthy mouth is down to the person being filthy.

Ilovemyshed · 14/09/2026 07:35

Absolutely disgusting. Stand firm OP and refuse to have them stay.

Madamecholetsbonnet · 14/09/2026 07:53

You have to stand firm. The cat is out of the bag now and there’s no going back.

ParmoParmoPARMO · 14/09/2026 07:57

Your poor MIL, having to live with him!

Littledidsheknow · 14/09/2026 08:36

As a PP said you have your ultimatum. If they refuse to see you again that’s on them. Your DH can visit them alone. You don’t and shouldn’t have to put up with this. It’s selfish and antisocial to insist on not fixing a problem that puts other people out.

We had a man deliver our new car and he came into the house. He stank like he’d been dead for weeks. Not BO, but from his mouth. We had to give him a lift to the station and OMG I had to sit with my head out of the open window!
If your FIL smelt a quarter as bad as this chap I’d never allow him to stay!

Screamingabdabz · 14/09/2026 08:40

Why is it down to you “to sort the situation out”? This is your husband’s family is it not? His dad is the problem - let the men sort it out.

whippersnapper55 · 14/09/2026 08:50

I'm failing to see what you have to feel guilty about! You haven't caused this fall-out, your FIL has. He's quite happy to impose his revolting smell on other people, including his own wife, because he can't be bothered to attend to his own personal hygiene. It's frankly disgusting and if I were you, I'd be pretty angry about that. I honestly wouldn't be prepared to spend any time with him at all.

If he won't come and stay and he's banned you from his house, that's a win in my book!
