Drug taking in daughter's student house

Hi, I'm looking for advice please.

My daughter is sharing a privately let student house with 3 others people. Two men and another woman, all are around 19. The other man and woman have lived together with my daughter since they got the house in July with no issues. There is a shared sitting room and kitchen with seating for all plus some guests which they all use considerately.

Four days ago the other man moved in. He smokes weed constantly and in the shared spaces, he has moved his girlfriend in and last night he had lots of people round smoking weed and getting drunk. They ended up sleeping in the kitchen and sitting room effectively blocking them off.

I live 2 hours away and found this out when I visited this morning. After lunch out we went back to the house and asked the various people to get up out of the kitchen and sitting room which they did. The place stunk of weed.

AIBU to phone the landlord if this happens again. It's not let by a big company the landlord only has this house and he lives close by. Daughter is upset as are the other two people and all 3 felt very uncomfortable with the drug use and people lying around the shared space.

Advice gratefully received please

Some start at 14 and and are full blown addicts by 19. Seems to be the case here - a simple, scummy garden variety addict. Can't imagine it's pleasant to share house with one.

I would say, weed reduces IQ by at least 10 points.

How did smoking weed become so scummy? When I was at Uni - wasn't called Uni then either, we smoked the odd joint at a party, only because that was something you were meant to do when you went to college. It wasn't something we did on a daily basis or in common rooms.

The three of them want him not to smoke in the house and not have people sleeping in the kitchen or sitting room. They have said this on the house Wattsapp and are waiting for his reply.

They should also tell him that his gf needs to move out...

And yet, Mumsnetters are very keen to judge and complain when it's their neighbours smoking weed.... The stink is unbearable apparently. Does the student weed smell different then?
Are students allowed to burn waste in their garden whilst neighbours washing is on the line? Help me make sense please.

As a student of four years, with two siblings who both went to uni (who both married people that also went to uni), and as someone who worked as a lettings agent FOR STUDENTS for a year after I graduated - it 100% is NOT normal for students to smoke weed at home….

None of the above named did, none of the houses I showed/inspected did bar TWO.

Normally if it’s 3 on 1, the 3 flatmates sit the 1 down and explain it’s not acceptable and if it happens again (smoking weed at all, having a huge group round late) they’ll report them. That usually puts a 19 year old off doing it again for fear of being homeless. If no one feels they can do that step, then just report to the landlord (all three of them) and explain to other tenant it’s illegal and won’t be tolerated.

Our neighbour at university clearly smoked weed out the back of his house and he was a dad in his 30s with two kids and we could smell it at times through our back door. My flatmate (tiny Yorkshire girl, grew up on a farm) told him what for once and I think he got scared we’d report him to SSC and the council so he stopped 🤣 Their neighbours may also notice is my point, as will the LL. Report it now.

People saying it’s “normal” for a student house are just weird. Pay £9K a year to be stoned? I paid £3.5K a year and lived with two other lovely girls who like me loved snuggly nights in watching movies and making carbonara or ordering in 🤷🏻‍♀️

How could you state what happened in a house your company let out when you weren't there?

Wreckinball · 13/09/2026 22:06

Hmmm if you are DDs guarantor you may want to put your size 10s in and contact LL as you may be ££££ responsible if the place gets wrecked, but check contract first to see how getting weedy evicted may affect DD and other tenants financially

fashionqueen0123 · 13/09/2026 22:05

Phone the landlord. Follow up on WhatsApp if needed. Pick up the phone!

TheGander · 13/09/2026 22:02

So they don’t really know this guy and he’s there to make up numbers. It’s not going to get better, the best thing is to ask him to leave but that means the other 3 will have to cover his rent. Might be easier if the landlord gets involved. I’d there a no drugs clause in the rental contract? If so that will make it easier to get rid of him. We had a similar situation when I was a student back in the 80s. One of the girls moved in her semi feral boyfriend. It went from bad to worse, they ended up stealing from one of the other flatmates and then disappeared.
To all those who says why don’t people speak to each other anymore- it’s not nt so easy. We didn’t get out resentments out in the open either, things simmered on until the dramatic climax.

Minasama · 13/09/2026 22:02

The daughter and other tenants should do this, definitely encourage her to.

MrsClattenburg · 13/09/2026 22:02

@HobnobsChoice OMG, brilliant! 😂

Mandem... Famalam... Chumdren... 🤣

Dumbledore167 · 13/09/2026 22:01

Very weird to jump right to grassing him up with landlord before so much as a challenging F2F conversation about it. This is very normal student behaviour to the point of being mundane, in my time (early noughties).

'She's my third one at Uni and this hasn't happened in any of the other shared houses.'

That they told you about anyway...

But if the other flatmates don't like it, simply asking him to stop is a reasonable thing to do first. Contacting the landlord seems like an overreaction as a first step. If asking him, doesn't solve the problem, I would suggest Student Services or the Student Union for advice - it doesn't matter that it's not University accommodation, it's all student conduct.

Chumdren, lol. I like that word.

Agreed, your daughter is an adult, she should be complaining, not you.

I disagree. Yes daughter is an adult but the OP is the parent with more life experience and less likely to be brushed off by the landlord. These other people need to be kicked out ASAP.

carkey26 · 13/09/2026 21:53

Are they all on the contract for this place?
Are they responsible for the full property together or have contracts for their individual rooms?

If it’s a joint contract I don’t think it would do much good going to the landlord.. surely he would just evict all of them?
If it’s not joint then yes definitely report it and try and get this guy out.

They've got to live with this guy. Why wouldn't they just speak up?

Can people not speak in person to each other anymore.

Gen Z seem incapable of speaking to people in person and on the phone. They only deal with messaging.

They have such little resilience and confidence I am genuinely worried for the younger generations of society.

They haven’t even said it to his face?! They’ve sent him a WhatsApp message!! Dear lord they all need to get a grip, grow up and just speak to him!

Keroppi · 13/09/2026 21:47

Well maybe it was a one off Saturday party. It's weird he didn't tell anyone he was having people round tho
You could phone the landlord and say it stank of weed when you visited along with any other maintenance issues you maybe noticed?
But really your daughter needs to link up with the other flatmates and tell matey boy that he can't smoke indoors.
It's uni, they all learn to interact and live with other people. The classic passive aggressive notes and blow up in the group chat, fridge space stealing etc. Don't rob her of that!

Surely the first course of action is that they (other housemates and your daughter) speak to him and say he is not to have people staying over and that smoking and drugs are not allowed in the property as per the contract. If he does it again then contact the landlord. Them, not you.

Treetreetreetree · 13/09/2026 21:39

Why are people so mean?! Of course you want to help.
Having dodgy stoned people in the house is not appropriate and dangerous. Door just stinks as well - you can’t get away from it.
I don’t care what anyone says about her being an adult you still need to advocate for her.
