Was my neighbour rude when I asked her to keep noise down?

can you honestly tell me whether you think my neighbour was rude in this situation?

At around 23:30, nearly midnight, there suddenly started being quite loud noise from upstairs — people laughing and shouting, and doors being slammed repeatedly. It didn’t seem like it was going to stop. It was loud enough that my elderly parents woke up and became worried, and I was also worried because my two children, aged 3 and 5, were asleep and I didn’t want them to be woken up.
It also wasn’t the first time. There had been quite a lot of noise from them throughout the night on previous occasions, which had woken me up multiple times, but I had ignored it. They also have a dog that sometimes barks continuously.

Eventually I went upstairs to politely ask if they could keep the noise down. I was speaking gently and was actually smiling. I had barely started explaining — I had only managed to mention the door slamming — when my neighbour cut me off and said:
“If the door slams, it slams. We are upstairs so the noise will come down. We also hear your children upstairs.”
Then she said “good night” sarcastically and shut the door.

I wasn’t aggressive or confrontational, and I wasn’t demanding complete silence. I just wanted the noise to be kept down because it was nearly midnight and it had already disturbed several people in my home.
Do you think I was being unreasonable for going upstairs to say something, or was her response rude and unnecessarily defensive?

besides this, her kids are secondary & working age. Mine are 3&5, and they never make noise at midnight!

should I try speaking to her again, saying other times I ignored it and she was very rude at this occasion? Or would that makes things worse?

Would you consider speaking and recording a complaint to your council?

BlueMum16 · 13/09/2026 09:20

Did the noise reduce last night?

I probably would just leave it now. Until the next time.

Nothing you did was wrong. She was probably just pissed off at being called out.

Dont overthink this

MartiniGlassHandbag · 13/09/2026 09:22

How often is this happening? Every night/weekend/once a month? And you said "quite loud" is there music booming etc

hi, yeah the noise came straight down after. But I didn’t like the way she cut me off ( as all other times I tolerated being woken up several times). So I couldn’t explain myself,
but I am also worried incase I go back and it escalates as she doesn’t seem like the person to listen. She just got very defensive.

I think most people would get defensive if a neighbour went round and complained about them.

She mentioned your kids - do they make a lot of noise and disturb them? If so, maybe a bit of tolerance both ways wouldn't go amiss.

Don’t go back, you’ve tried and she’s not reasonable. If it happens again record it and contact the council.

Literally the constant tapping noise at night has been ongoing. Every night randomly it starts. ( sometimes feel like I’m in a concentration camp).

but strangely didn’t happen tonight.

but the loud noise where they are screaming, laughing very loud, running and slamming doors non stop happens occasionally. But last night it happened for a good 5-10 mins before I went up.

Sounds like she is annoyed because there is quite a lot of noise from your children which she doesn't complain about. And that's why she was a bit rude.

They are 3&5, so sometimes as they argue or cry I’m guessing their voice may go up. But never In antisocial hours. They’re also at school /nursery majority of the day anyway.

I have a similar problem with a neighbour and everytime it happens I log a noise report. It's the only thing that works as evidence even though it's tedious.

Honestly, 5-10 minutes of noise doesn't sound worthy of complaint to me.

I mean it was still ongoing, so I don’t know how long it would’ve lasted otherwise.

What would you gain from telling her she was rude? She knows, she was there!
They did quieten down so job done 👍

You being a family of five think that the noise from your flat doesn’t travel?
You are on different time schedules. I’m not defending her slamming doors. Living above five people won’t be quite either. It’s one of those things when you live in close proximity to neighbours.
I would image your children wake earlier and sometimes make noise.
If they were partying I would understand.

Happyjoe · 13/09/2026 09:44

The noise of footsteps and slamming doors travels further and is louder than voices (I live similar OP!). She sounds like she doesn't have carpet? If she is a council tenant, that may be against her terms, most councils now insist on not having wood/laminate in a flat.

She doesn't sound like a great neighbour, another entitled so and so. I would start waking them up early at weekends if they like late nights and gatherings...

If you complain to the council, they ask you to keep a noise log. Some councils will have an app to record bursts of noise instead.

Justanotherteacher · 13/09/2026 09:48

I think she was embarrassed and defensive, which is where the comment about your kids came from. I’d wait, don’t ignore her but don’t go up to talk to her about it unless it happens in the same way again.

Sure, but you didn't give it much of a chance to stop, is my point.

I think living in flats requires tolerance on all sides. I would (personally) ignore 5-10 minutes of noise at 11.30pm, especially if I had small children who are almost guaranteed to cause their own disturbances.

I also hear their voices, randomly singing at midnight but again I try ignore it. Sometimes they leave the dog at home alone, and it doesn’t stop barking for hours, and again I ignore it.
And the tapping noise that’s constant it’s the worst bit as it wakes me at middle of the night, but again I’ve tried to ignore it. But I couldn’t explain any of this. Sometimes they even play football during the day at home, and can hear everything but as it’s day time I try my best to ignore it although it’s so loud!

it was so so bad that we thought they were having a argument at one point.

Sound awful neighbours, sorry OP. I live next to a right tosser and it can really get a person down. You have my sympathies.

Good luck with the council. Environmental health dept can be a bit hit and miss with help, hopefully yours is a good one.

Leave it.

Any more communication about this is overkill.

The noise reduced after you spoke to her and if there's a problem in the future, then you can speak to her again.
