AIBU to keep our Disneyland trip if it clashes with the nativity?

Booked Disneyland trip from Saturday to Tuesday in December and just realised that it might fall on the day of the Nativity Show.

My mind is saying it’s okay but I feel bad! Will I regret missing it in the year to come or is there always another year? DD stared Y1.

There will be years of nativity plays to come, keep your plans.

LauritaEvita · 12/09/2026 10:52

Just make sure you let the school know in advance so they can make sure your child isn’t given a part. They’d still let them join in with rehearsals, learning the songs etc.

EverytimeItPours · 12/09/2026 11:09

You were fine with taking your child outside of school until you realised something fun for you was going to happen during that time. I mean I don’t care about strangers taking their kids out of school but I do think it’s a bit rich in this case

CooperCopperCapper · 12/09/2026 11:10

Presuming they did the nativity last year in reception, I’d still go to Disneyland. If it’s their first, I’d switch dates.

BirdLandedonmyHead · 12/09/2026 11:13

Just be sure to tell the school far enoigh in advance so tgey are "4th sheep" etc.

BlueMum16 · 12/09/2026 11:13

There's always something they'll miss in school. You were fine with this when booking it.

Like PP said let the school know so DC isn't allocated a part ahead of others.

This. It's a bugger to get the little ones well versed in their performance. I'd be gutted if I'd spent 6 weeks getting it perfect for the family to be on a long planned holiday...

@LauritaEvita yes that is the plan.

Nothing to do with me or what I’m like. You make no mention of your daughter missing out or how she might feel. Just that you might regret missing it. My point stands, you were happy for her to take time out of school when you thought presumably that nothing was going to happen at school during that time. Now you’re going to miss something fun, you’ve got a dilemma.

PurpleThistle7 · 12/09/2026 11:18

Your child might care but no one else will. At my school I only had to suffer through nativity drama for p1 and 2 thankfully. They don’t do it with the older kids. So if that’s the scenario you’re missing half of it but it sounds like you have many more years of this to get through so you won’t miss out.

sesquipedalian · 12/09/2026 11:20

Why are you taking your DC out of school in term time? I take it you don’t regard education as important…

workingmama111 · 12/09/2026 11:20

@EverytimeItPours it stand or it doesn’t it doesn’t really matter as that was not the point of this post. But thank you for your insight.

Sorry op but my thinking was like @EverytimeItPours. You have chosen a term time holiday near Christmas, your choice, and consequences are missing things. I managed to get mine through education without missing school for holidays (they did miss 4 days for a wedding in Germany though)

workingmama111 · 12/09/2026 11:21

@sesquipedalian 😀

@bababamama that was the best I can afford and she’s been going on about it for ages. So yes I do think that making memories with her and her missing two days will be worth it.

Yes you'll probably miss the nativity.

I think if you are going to go away in term time then the absolute worse time to go is the last week of december term. There is so much fun stuff going on then.

workingmama111 · 12/09/2026 11:23

Just wanted to say that everyone has a different view on missing school and I completely understand.

You should feel bad about taking your child out of school for something available in the holidays.

Let the school know.

I have sympathy for children being taken out of school for a cultural event only in term time, or to visit a relative who cannot travel to you, not for this kind of jolly.

Chilly80 · 12/09/2026 12:01

Double check with a parent who has an older child what they do each year. Our school only does the nativity in years 1 and 2.

CloudyWithAChanceOfCustard · 12/09/2026 12:11

You booked it for December…what did you think would be happening in December, if not the Nativity? 🤷‍♀️

Needmoresleep89 · 12/09/2026 12:14

Our school also only does the Nativity years 1 and 2, so I wouldn’t want to miss that. If they were going to do it every year, I’d go on the trip.

workingmama111 · 12/09/2026 12:17

@Needmoresleep89 yes it’s year R,1 and 2. She had one last year. In the later years it’s a choir show.

I wouldn’t be bothered to miss it. But check when the children are performing it to the school or doing dress rehearsals as our school lets parents attend those if they cannot make the event.

Why because they pointed out the obvious and challenged you? Sorry that doesn't make them not a delight, it merely your ridiculousness
