AIBU to keep our Disneyland trip if it clashes with the nativity?

Ok going to the expense of changing a holiday then. It's unlikely to be free to make chamges

Who said anything about losing a holiday? The OP said she’d check about moving the dates otherwise she’d still go (paraphrasing obviously). Do keep up.

No one I know has thought it was that big a deal that they'd lose a holiday over it

Oh bore off, are you really so hard of thinking that you can’t fathom that to some parents, the first nativity is a big deal? 🙄

I felt very sorry for the music teacher at the prep school I worked at who gave up lunchtimes to rehearse an orchestra for the carol concert only for almost half the kids to miss the carol concert due to term time holidays!! She had to rewrite some of the kids parts and even video two girls playing their part and have the rest of the orchestra play along to the video.

so, yes please tell the staff so she doesn’t get given a part!

All these people saying the kids do no learning in the last week and it’s just the nativity - the nativity IS the learning. The aim isn’t a west end level of production. But children learn a lot from learning songs, learning their lines, learning dances, working together to put on a production, standing up in front of everyone to do their bit, Obviously the finished outcome isn’t great and most people don’t really enjoy watching, but do you really think schools would dedicate hours of learning time to something which wasn’t actually learning?

that said, I do acknowledge most kids would choose Disney.

With two children each doing one Nativity play a year from pre-school to Y2 I attended ten Nativity plays. Not quite the same as for my mum who got just the one when I was in reception class. I think it's ok to miss one, particularly if they are only four.

Whilst I don’t agree with taking kids out of school in term time there is a good chance that your child would be a sheep or a tree in the Nativity.
Inform the school well in advance and please do not phone in with an ‘illness’ the night before your trip. It wouldn’t be fair to the school, your child or their classmates.

I'm sorry if my comment sounded critical, it wasn't at all. I was worried I'd be told off for forgetting the plays! I'm just looking back and thinking how many nativities can I actually really remember and (without looking back at videos!) it's only the ones where it all went to pot. I would absolutely go to Disneyland and I hope you have a wonderful time ❤️

Your child will get more from the trip than the nativity. You will get more opportunities to take pleasure in watching your child on the trip than in the play.
I have never seen a nativity (and I've seen many!) that delivered any more than a couple of minutes tops of trying to catch a glimpse of my child/,grandchild, with the thing lasting about 20 minutes total. The enjoyment level of the children ranges from short lived excitement to apathy through to discomfort and tears.
No doubt in my mind which is the better value choice.

Well exactly my son is 19 now i dont think.he can remember being a donkey.in the nativityu
I do remember being sat in a cold school hall i also remember the kids that were Mary and Joseph because it was the Deputy heads daughter
And a Teaching assistants son the same two kids that were picked for everything....

Might be hard for her if she had no part or will be doing the rehearsals but not actually taking part

Hopefully this doesn't make me a terrible mother but I have three children as well as nephews and nieces and godchildren and I have seen so many nativity plays that being told now that a school are doing something else is practically being invited to the Oscars for me. The only ones I can clearly remember are the ones that descended into chaos with wrong lines, wet pants, tantrums, on stage arguments and unexpected animals. There will be loads of nativity plays that, like me, you might forget. Disney is a special trip with memories that will last forever.
Edit: forgot to add, as others have said nativity is a big part of school life in the run up to it and you don't want your daughter to feel left out. When speaking to the teacher, ask if it might be possible for her to have a helping role and still be included in the excitement. It's been a long time since mine were young enough for nativity so I'd forgotten this!

I thought Nativity was only for the first 2 year groups? Not just meaning my own kids' schools, but with friends who have kids at others, thought it was only for the little ones. I know you said your daughter only started Y1 OP, so maybe she's at a different type of school, I'm talking about average UK state schools. If you booked the holiday before she started school, I don't know if you'd be able to claim on travel insurance, I'd guess no, but maybe you could swap the holiday .

Miss maybe being stuck on a stage behind the usual Queen Bee Mary ? 😀 Go to Disneyland.

Also our school have published the dates calendar already which goes through all the big events for the year. You could always ask your school if they do this. Parents find it helpful to know when shows are and even to know sports day even though it's not til July so they can ensure they book the time off well in advance.

Just be aware that from half term onwards time is taken up with nativity practice. Learning songs and lines etc. Will your child be happy going along with this knowing they won't be there for the actual performance? You might need to have a good chat with them about this each day if they are upset (we wouldn't have the staff to do something 1:1 during this time and the alternative would be to put into a year 3 class who don't do nativities in our school which not all children would be happy about).
