Lending things to neighbours

Our house is on a small development of 4 houses. When we moved in, some of the neighbours spoke to us about expectations of living there. They were nothing out of the ordinary, just about not making a lot of noise and helping by taking in parcels and bins on bin day, but they said that we all help each other out. We had young children at the time and they did try to lay the law down about them which we found overbearing. Our kids haven't caused them any issues though so all ok.

We have done parcels, bins and helped get some shopping for some of them in Covid. We have lent them things like ladders and tools. There have been things we have refused to do like lifts to the airport and looking after pets when they’re on holiday due to time constraints and work.

We have recently bought a ride on lawn mower. Before this we had a gardener that did the lawn but my husband is now only working 3 days a week so wants to do more of the garden himself. One of our neighbours has asked if they can use the lawnmower to save them paying for their gardener. My husband has said no. Another neighbour approached me about it and said again that we all help each other out here. I got out of the conversation by saying something about it being his new toy and he doesn’t want to share. Would you think lending this would come under normal and expected for neighbours to do? It’s an expensive item and we’d rather it was just us that used it. Are we being unreasonable?

Very, very cheeky. I’d definitely go with the insurance excuse.

They must think they're running some sort of American HOA nonsense.

I wouldn't have taken kindly to being given a list of "expectations" from strangers when I moved in. Tell them to F off.

My thoughts exactly.
And what ' list of requirements ' did they have about your children's behavior ?

InQuiresandplaceswheretheysing · 14/09/2026 06:10

Sounds very overbearing. You owe them nothing. You don’t have to help/share/ lend if you don’t want too..

Mummy2mybear · 14/09/2026 04:36

Cheeky and entitled I would not even get into conversation with them ignore and avoid they will soon get the message. Do not give them anything, I would be the neighbour from hell to them because as soon as they tried to lay down rules to me I would have told them to get lost hell no.

Philmitchelle · 14/09/2026 01:23

I lent a mower to a neighbour and it ended up in the swimming pool.

Buffs · 14/09/2026 01:17

They should not have asked to borrow such an expensive item in the first place and they absolutely should never have asked you after your husband refused. They are not polite people and I would give them a wide berth.

Redragtoabull · 13/09/2026 22:06

They would've been told that's not how we roll from day one, laying down the law like that would have got my back up aggy cat style. Yet another tale of absolute cheeky fuckers. Seriously, is there a school where these wankers learn this crazy entitled shit. Looking after pets and lifts to the airport, fucking hell, surprised they haven't asked you to pay their mortgage and wipe their arses!

PMA1981 · 13/09/2026 18:05

CF’ers.

Stick to your guns and advise your husband will mow their lawn for a fee. Find out what the current gardner rate is and add 30%. That will make them go away.

kiwiane · 13/09/2026 17:59

I’d find them annoying and there’s no way I’d lend a ride on mower or give lifts to the airport to subsidise their holidays.
Pet sitting is tedious and can also get you into trouble; keep what you agree to do to a minimum.
I wouldn’t be friendly when the busy body tells you how you are expected to behave; you’re grown adults with your own lives.

Jorge14 · 13/09/2026 17:53

They sound like very demanding neighbours!

Ccow · 12/09/2026 20:38

SIL is like this, she expects us to lend her things at the drop of a hat, rings us at night asking us to get something out of our loft as she needs it now! I started saying no as things she borrowed came back with pieces missing or broken. Once she wanted to borrow our camping fridge as they were going on another holiday and wanted to save money by putting food in the fridge in the hotel room instead of eating out!

I said no it's not working, she was huffing and puffing down the phone, oh well we will have to think of something else then! ... yes like if you can't afford a holiday dont go on 1, or if you want a camping fridge... buy your own to use!

I hate that entitlement!

My nans and parents neighbours growing up would always help out if needed, but never lived in each other's pockets and there was never the expectation, or rules! If they couldn't help that was fine! Everyone had their own stuff to use and just got on with it!

Think you just need to say no and learn that you do not have to justify, if they stop talking to you, great! Peace and quiet!!

Keyleads · 12/09/2026 19:44

You have clearly moved in to Cheeky Fxxker Close.
Telling you of their expectations?
How did you not tell them to F off?
Frosty wouldn't come near my reaction to that.

LaraF89 · 12/09/2026 19:41

I had neighbours a bit like this, laid down rules & slagged off all the other neighbours, they were bored! They complained about the ‘hum’ of our hot tub to my face, I promptly sold my house & they were fuming about us moving as the person that bought the house was vile & didn’t keep the garden nice. My husband kept the grass like Wimbledon but they couldn’t keep quiet about the hot tub! I still giggle to myself. So pleased I moved!

Shinyandnew1 · 12/09/2026 18:15

How do they ‘help you out’?

junebirthdaygirl · 12/09/2026 17:58

My dh has had a ride on for years. Never has a neighbour asked to borrow it. Never has a neighbour asked for a ride to the airport or to have their pet minded either. All our neighbours are different people, different ages , different jobs etc but they all have one thing in common..good manners and proper respect.

QueenJelly · 12/09/2026 17:36

“I’ve checked the house deeds and there’s nothing there about having to share all my stuff with CF neighbours”

Mamaof3monkeys · 12/09/2026 16:17

You should be able to say no without feeling you need an excuse

JudyTeeny · 12/09/2026 16:12

The cheeky swine! If they're too bloody mean to pay for a gardener they should get their own lawnmower.
I can just imagine the type of people they are, wannabe king of the road, give an inch and they take a mile. Just stick to bins and parcels but only if it suits you to help. They've used up their share of goodwill.

LatteLady · 12/09/2026 16:07

You need to see if there is a local Library of Things, which lend out big items which you seldom use, from Lawnmowers to sanders, Step Ladders to drills etc. There is usually a small fee but they are very handy... And no, it is not necessary to lend it to an over-eager amateur gardiner!

Noodle9951 · 12/09/2026 16:05

Pet sitting? Just no. Close friends and close family maybe. Not neighbours.

ironsSteve · 12/09/2026 15:56

Don’t do the insurance thing. You don’t need to give a reason. Just say no that won’t work for us.

dottiedodah · 12/09/2026 15:54

A talk about what is expected FFS! Just let them pay for their own mower. They are being ridiculous and a lot of CFs .Take no notice .Apparently you have to pass a test of no noisy parties ,or anything that may disturb neighbours in Salisbury close next to the Cathedral!

Whosthetabbynow · 12/09/2026 15:53

I’d say the mower isn’t ours, we’ve borrowed it. Not much they can say to that. Best thing to do is go in shut the door and keep yourself to yourself; wherever you live. I couldn’t bear the intrusion and the feeling that I was living in some sort of commune/holiday park.

BlackCat14 · 12/09/2026 15:46

Another neighbour approached me about it and said again that we all help each other out here.

This part would have infuriated me! Who do they think they are?!

Partingofthewaves · 12/09/2026 15:29

I have a rental property next door and some new tenants asked to borrow my lawnmower but they returned it broken. I don’t lend out gardening tools any longer.
