Thinking of the family and friends of all those killed 25 years ago. So many brave stories told. Evil will not win.

25 years ago the biggest terrorist attack.

These terrorists that would destroy freedom and democracy still killing around the world. The fight against those that would attempt to destroy democracy and freedom goes on. They operate around the world, mainly funded by Iran, Hezbollah, Hamas, ISIS, and all the other extremist islamist organisations ( so many of them operate in the Middle East, Africa and elsewhere).

When you say they hate the freedoms in the west, and want to destroy it, can you explain why ?

This is something I often hear, but I have never heard the people who say it give a reason as to why they do.

For example. There are 1.4 billion people in China who have nothing like the freedom found in the west. But we don't hear anyone saying the Chinese want to destroy the west because of freedoms.

I remember Bin Laden did give a reason for the attack, but I don't recall it was to do with hating freedom. I thought it was about US troops, or infidels, being in Saudi Arabia. He did not want "non believers" in what he considered as a holy land.

China don't have religious extremist terrorists attacking westerners.

Surely you have read something of the aims of religious islamist extremists --- kill infidels, as in non believers and spread their extremist version of Islam. They have managed to spread extremist Islam through Africa. Most of the terrorist threats around the world are from islamist extremists. Good grief look at how the Taliban treat women and girls, and no they west didn't make them treat women and girls that way, its their interpretation of Islam so women shouldn't be educated after 12, women shouldn't x and shouldn't do y. Appalling and not the fault of the West at all. The fault is with their teachings.

Certain left leaners would suggest all these problems were the fault of the west and tge fluffy misunderstood freedom fighters were our fault. Always discounting them from any agency over their actions

And what other thing would that be?

Oh I think we know. It's the usual lazy go to accusation when they want to shut down discussion on this topic. As for the left and right not being relevant - it's always pertinent in political and warfare narrative.

Yeah. It's playbook stuff.

I saw the thread, and I was not going to post going by the title alone, respect for the dead and the date etc. But then I read below the title, and I see things claimed that look factually wrong. So I post seeking clarification, as did yourself. Then the accusation of "lefties support terrorism", reply, and then the accusations of the "left are intolerant"

Happens all the time. Instead of, as you say, addressing the points raised.

And I daresay if I ask how some posters manage to identify a "lefty" from a few lines of text, I will maybe be accused of being " an intellectual" or something like that. Next it will be left elite or whatever, and it's into a whole new "Reform" type thread. Clash of cultures etc.

And potentially, we are in a situation there 9/11 is being used by people with some other thing in mind.

And what other thing would that be?

I did contribute. I explained why the specious ThEy HaTe OuR fReEdOm thing was wrong and that the motivation for the attacks was the perceived unwanted intervention by the West in the Middle East.

That was then taken as me somehow excusing the attacks which is ridiculous and offensive so I pointed that out.

But as you raised the point about contributions to this thread, other than your two comments trying to crowbar left v right politics into a debate about international terrorism, what have you contributed to this thread?

Yeah. It's playbook stuff.

Perhaps if the current POTUS hadn't fucked around and got the US into a position where Iran can fuck the West's economies and the USA can do sod all about it (re-name Hormuz as "the Straights of America" perhaps?), things might be different.

The USA is fast running out of friends (Israel excepted - for all the good they are) and China is watching and waiting.

Why do so many on the left immediately resort to making petty insults about someone’s intelligence when they have nothing better to contribute?

I saw some awful comments on Facebook yesterday about who was really behind 9/11. It wasn't the US this time, it was the most persecuted people in history who had carried out the attack. Sick fucks. I'm glad I don't know anyone who can see how the Iran regime plays out on its own people - never mind anyone else - and still support them.

LuckyHazelFox · 12/09/2026 07:21

I agree OP but the appeasing left, as you can see, will be more worried about racism than all those innocent people killed. They really are ignorant about what's happening and as for saying the USA is more of a threat to us!

Osama Bin Laden said when claiming responsibility for 9/11 called for "Free Palestine". Then, people in the West were overwhelming on the side of UK/US in the pursuit of terrorists. What has happened? These same Islamic terrorists still have the same aim to destroy the West. When Israel was attacked ( in a much worse more personal attack involving so many more people proportionally to the population on October 7th) you had Palestinian Action filing for marches in London on October 8th 2023 before Israel had even counted their dead or made any response. That is because that is what was planned.......the aim was to drum up anti- Israel rhetoric. Hamas have achieved their goal- they didn't care about dead civilians, the more dead the better for their ideology. " martyrs". These weren't "grassroots" protests- they were planned and executed with precision and have now infiltrated college campuses in the UK and US with their harmful ideology. And they seem to have succeeded.

Everyone who values freedom should be against this ideology.

Free Gaza- from Hamas
Free Lebanon- from Hezbolah
Free Yemen- from the Houthis
Free Iran- from the IRGC

This !

Yes they do. They hate the freedom we enjoy. We can speak out. Don't have to bow down to extremist doctrine. They hate that we will not be controlled, as they control so many, in their various areas of operation.

Yetanothername3 · 12/09/2026 05:17

But it is not Iran, itis Saudi Arabia and always has been.
Iran became quite westernised and progressive until the 1979 religious uprising that brought down the Shah.
America is being played and manipulated.

Hence their current friendship with Saudi A and trade sanctions on Canada who took in thousands of mostly Americans that day when the latter's air space was closed.

To try to frame the motives of Bin Laden et al as "they hate our freedom" is so spectacularly wrong and jingoistic it's both sickening and deeply misleading.

The primary motivation was the perceived meddling by the West in the politics, economics and conflicts of the Middle East. That's what Bin Laden, his backers and his adherents saw themselves as striking a blow against. It wasn't about our "freedom", it was about - from their point of view - countries thousands of miles away playing power games in their home countries.

You're not being unreasonable @REMEMBERthemALL

Iran are still funding proxies but there seems to be an acceptance of it now and the very little condemnation of the IRGC, Hamas, Hezbollah or the Houthis.

The condemnation is nearly all geared towards the West now. Yet we are the West (most of us on Mumsnet) surely.

The hatred for the west by some in the west seems madness. This self loathing and blaming of all the ills of the world on the west. No accountability for anything by the terrorists and supporters. Chanting along support for The Houthis, vile terrorists, at rallies for Gaza, crazy, The Houthis are extremist terrorists, not heroes!

An act planned by a Saudi bafflingly resulted in the US and allied complete destruction of Iraq and a 20 year occupation of Afghanistan, opened the way for ISIS to bring Syria into it and strengthened Iran’s resolve to resist western aggression.

And around the circle we go.

IRGC, Hamas, Hezbollah are all proscribed in the UK and the Houthis are heavily sanctioned. That is condemnation isn't it?

Condemnation from the UK government.

I don't see much condemnation of them on Mumsnet or elsewhere, considering.

It isn't the biggest terrorist attack. Just the biggest affecting Americans. Or do you consider the others acts of war ?
