To wonder how people can cope with smells worse than this!?

Just got home from being out for the day.

As I entered the dining room I was hit by an awful smell. Immediately started looking around for a mess. Maybe the cat had thrown up etc. Nothing.

So shone a torch under the side table/cabinet. Tiny dead mouse.

Have got it out and thrown it away. It wasn’t badly decomposed or anything, not actually decomposing visibly yet thank goodness.

But the smell was awful. Like a food bin in hot weather. I disinfected the floor and I’m now sat in another room, outside doors open in both rooms, and I can still smell it (or feel like I can….)

Not the first time we’ve had it. (Aren’t cats great 🤣)

Every time this happens though I can’t help but think how awful those houses you see where everything they move there are dead mice/rats etc. Or worse, how awful it must be for people who have to find (and smell) dead bodies.

Just crazy how bad one teeny mouse can smell.

I know the smell you mean. I found half a dead mouse in a basket of cat toys in my house because of that smell. 😩

Should try living in my house.
In the space of half a mile we have the water sewage plant, an animal incinerator/by products and rendering processor, surrounded by fields so cow muck in the summer, a dead rat seems to crop up in the cellar now and again 🤮
I'd like to say you get use to it but we haven't!
We just watch it kick off on the local fb page every now and again when environmental health have been contacted and you get
the sewage plant and rendering factory enployees battle it out to pass the blame 😅

Yesterday I was sat in front of a man on the bus that reeked of stale beer and cigarettes, with some BO thrown in. It wasn't just a whiff, it was as if he'd bathed in old lager dregs and ashtrays. There were people moving seats.

That on it's own might not be that surprising, but this guy was wearing work gear and a hi-vis jacket, and he was on the phone to a friend or colleague talking about work. It made me wonder how on earth he could hold down a job and smell like that? He must've worked outside on his own! He didn't appear drunk at all, the beer smell was old and stale (might even have been in his sweat). I felt utterly sick for a couple of hours after that journey. I have no idea how someone could smell that bad, but i'm guessing his home smells worse.

Seemingly! I didn’t go into the dining room this morning before going out, so could have been overnight too I guess. Perhaps the cat brought it in a couple of days ago and it ran under there and died it takes a couple of days to get smelly? I’m not sure how fast something decomposes/gets smelly etc?

Ugh it’s awful. we’ve had one in the under stairs cupboard before too and having to move things knowing eventually you’re going to find something gross is a special type of torture. 🤣

I think once you move the furniture it releases more of the smell. It’s cleared now, I’ll be paranoid for a few days though I’m sure. Might light a nice candle as generally I don’t have lots of air fresheners etc as find them all a bit intense.

I teach a student who smells like this. I described their smell as the vegetable drawer in the fridge when you’ve forgotten about something and it turns putrid, but abandoned mouse (we also have a cat) also works.

It’s a long way between “I can’t be arsed washing my hair today so I’ll stretch it until tomorrow” or “I’ve cycled in and smell a bit sweaty” to smelling of actual decomposition and my mind actually boggles.

Middletoleft · 11/09/2026 16:05

Eau de rodent - once smelled, never forgotten..... truly unique.

TealScroller · 11/09/2026 16:07

I used to work in the emergency services, the smell of death is one you never forget, plus it clings to your clothes, skin, hair.

shellyleppard · 11/09/2026 16:07

Happened to my parents. They thought it was a gas leak and had the gas boars out a couple of times.
Turned out a mouse had died between the floorboards after chewing on electrical wire....🤢🤢

40andwingingit · 11/09/2026 16:09

I take your dead mouse and raise you a toasted bluebottle fly that hit the electric bug zapper. The sound is satisfying, the smell is not. Absolutely grim!!

Uni lecturer or school teacher? If school age this sounds like neglect. Uni age and I can relate, I’ve found history students smell the worst for some reason!

Once had the misfortune of the same stinky man sitting in front of me twice on the train in a week. I was shocked someone could smell so bad and not care. His hair was thick with grease and he just generally looked unkempt, the smell was like shit and death and foist mixed together. I had to move both times.

RaraRachael · 11/09/2026 16:27

We came back from holiday to a horrendous smell in the dining room. Couldn't locate it for ages then found a dead mouse down the back of the piano.

Phineyj · 11/09/2026 16:28

I worked in a place where a mouse died under the stairs in a completely inaccessible place and had to smell it for MONTHS!

Waitingfordoggo · 11/09/2026 16:29

Sorry, bit of a darker example but I often wonder about the woman in Essex who killed her parents and then lived with the bodies for four years.

Nannyfannybanny · 11/09/2026 16:32

i was a country girl,most smells don't phase me
apart from really bad gangrene,it does stick to your clothes,(nursing)

Tcateh · 11/09/2026 16:33

Had about ten rats decomposing in the ceiling space of my lounge.
It's so grim, just had to wait it out 😔 neutradol everywhere.
Then 5 weeks later came the huge black flies coming in from any crack in the joists into other parts of the house.
Revolting experience.

BorgQueen · 11/09/2026 16:37

Liquified remains of a rat or squirrel that had got into a food recycling caddy and obviously got stuck. We came home after 2 weeks away to it 🤢

Lentilcakes · 11/09/2026 16:39

The worst smell for me is extremely unwashed person (being polite here). I just can’t bear that smell - it makes me want to 🤢 unf due to a health issue I can’t drive and it seems to be rife on the buses.
Weirdly never smelled dead mouse considering I’ve had cats for most of my life!

nocoolnamesleft · 11/09/2026 16:40

Death is such a penetrating all pervasive smell.

Welllll if you read the long , repetitive (and tedious) thread about wanting air freshener in a loo, the answer is
Open The Window !

Yeah course .

A lost potato is a pretty rank discovery too .

BrilliantBetty · 11/09/2026 16:43

Growing up there was a dead rat inaccessible in the wall in our loft (bedroom) no one was able to get it out. I stank for over a year.

Waitingfordoggo · 11/09/2026 16:43

Anyone who’s travelled in the Far East might be familiar with durian which is a fruit. It smells like decaying biological matter. I encountered it in Malaysia, where the locals claim it’s absolutely delicious, but I couldn’t get near enough to one to actually try it- the smell made me spontaneously vomit. I believe it’s banned on public transport in many places.

I think there is also a cheese which is banned on public transport in France.

Yesss I remember a part of our kitchen smelling like shit but even worse. Couldn’t work out what it was for days until I found a rotting potato in a barely used cupboard.

I'm all right with the smell of death - I can cope with that, and muckspreading - living in the countryside those smells are common. The one that gets me is stale wee. When I worked in the supermarket we had one customer, an otherwise very well turned out older man, who smelled so strongly of urine that customers in the queue would back off and I had to breathe through my mouth to serve him over the counter. He clearly had no idea how bad he smelled and I can only conclude that he was drying out and rewearing incontinence underwear.
