Sniffing on trains

It really isn’t just you OP as this thread and many others show

It’s funny how there’s been such a rise in “misophonia” recently. Couldn’t possibly be that people have become less considerate, more “me me me” and more likely to make noise in public without caring about the effect on others.

This thread has reminded me how disgusting some humans are 🤢

Yes, perhaps people have become less considerate. Various forms of deodorant, the concept of hankies and tissues were created for a reason. Applying overpowering levels of perfume or aftershave used to be mainly confined to teenagers who weren’t yet to get the balance right.

This - maybe it's my age but things are way worse than they were 30 years ago. People just behave as though they are in their own living room. Same as on planes, in cinemas, on buses. Just so inconsiderate and there is literally no excuse. None. Just pure lack of consideration for others.

Urgh, it all gives me the rage and I work on the railway so can’t avoid it 😫😂 my eyebrows have disappeared under my hairline due to the massive aggressive raising of them. Whenever I have asked people to use headphones I’m spoken to like I’m someone from a different century.

I always get the sniffles on trains. I put it down to something in the upholstery fabric.

I just wipe my nose with a tissue though, I'm not uncouth enough to sniff in close proximity to others.

Am so glad you started this thread as I have to sniff regularly. I have a recurring issue with my sinus where it is so swollen it is impossible to blow my nose! If I try, nothing happens apart from me going mind bendingly dizzy. However my nose still drips and runs constantly so my only option is to dab it every few seconds or sniff. Sometimes the area around my nose is really sore from dabbing it too much so sniffing is less painful, I know people don’t understand but it isn’t my fault!

It's the luck of the draw on trains. Unfortunately some awful, entitled people exist and there is no escape.

The hocking and sniffing sends me absolutely feral. I can’t bare it. I once went absolutely batshit when some guy hocked and spat in my local playground. Imagine if a kid tripped and fell in that.

I don’t know what those of us with allergic rhinitis are supposed to do. Just gone through the first page of replies and equal numbers are appalled by sniffing on the one hand and blowing the nose on the other. Nice to know I’m going to appall somebody.

But I’m 52, spent decades schlepping around on packed public transport so I stopped giving any shits a while ago.

I don’t like people who wear perfume and deodorant, making me sneeze or my nose run. They don’t tend to get the evils though.

The sound of sniffing fills me with uncontrollable rage. I’m amazed it hasn’t got me into trouble.

Sniffling thing could be a tick. I know someone who has it, annoys the hell out of me but can’t be helped.

I used to work on the checkout at Sainsbury's. As soon as I got on my till it would be 4 hours of constant running nose and sneezing. Turns out the underneath of the till space had years of dust built up (for some reason the team leaders thought it was our job to clean it even though no one realised it was there)

I doubt people can help it and I think you're just lucky you don't deal with allergies. I didn't used to understand why people would need to sniff or even sneeze and then I developed hay fever and some other allergy. Now when it's bad I have no choice but to sniff occasionally unless I want to keep tissues stuck up my nose, it runs that much. Just be glad you're not the one suffering! If you don't have a runny nose you can't really sniff even if you tried, people aren't doing it on purpose.

I agree that sneezing all over the window is disgusting but I once saw a boy put his head out of the old style train window and vomit. The train was moving so it splattered all over the door and along the next window. Unfortunately, a man getting off at the next station didn't notice and he shut the door and put his hand in it. You can imagine the look on his face

There's nothing wrong with blowing your nose- the people who have an issue with that need to grow up.

Constant sniffing very annoying. It's just going to keep dripping back down just sort it. Fine some people have these conditions where they can't help it and we can be mindful of that but I don't believe that's the case for most sniffers.

That's super weird. Have you never had a cold or hayfever? Some people have conditions that make them snuffle all the time and some have colds or hayfever. They should not be treated like pariahs. Unless you have never had a cold in your life you ought to be able to understand what that entails. If you haven't, you should still realise nose blowing is necessary and have empathy.

God some people are fucking gross.

Blowing it doesn’t help. I will just sniff again 30 seconds later.

Having now seen the candlesticks all of my offspring have produced permanently for the first 3 years of their life… I have come to believe this is a genetic defectiveness.
