Sniffing on trains

Why is it that everytime I step on a train (happily fairly infrequently, just every few months for work), I immediately end up in the near vicinity of someone snuffling and sniffing and snorting. It gives me the absolute rage. As well as people watching TikTok videos with sound, phonecalls on speaker phones and loud chewers. Last time I was sat opposite a woman who was literally SUCKLING on a croissant, complete with mhmm noises. I cannot cope. My partner allegedly does not experience this. AIBU to start deploying violence in the future?

Oh I include watching sound up videos in music. That's totally not ok. I started reading my book out loud once when the guy next to me put the sound up on the football match he was watching. He looked at me like I was crazy and I nodded at his phone and said 'I thought we were sharing?' He turned it off 🤣

Not using headphones is inexcusable but normal noises your husband doesn’t even hear is on you, some people have more sensitive hearing … use noise cancelling headphones

I work in public transport and use it every day.

I have stopped asking people to use EarPods for their phones. No point. So I wear loop earplugs now.

i always have a tissue for sniffers. It drives me insane too.

There are different types of sniffles - ones where blowing gets the boogers out and ones where blowing doesn't help.

I sniff when I get irritated eyes from dust, lack of sleep or sun&wind. There is nothing to blow but a teardrop amount of water. I dab at my nose with tissue at least part of the time if I'm in a close proximity to people. I'm sure that no one would appreciate me blowing my nose every 2 minutes instead!

Tbh when I have a runny nose to the extent I am sniffing…

Blowing it doesn’t help. I will just sniff again 30 seconds later.

Having now seen the candlesticks all of my offspring have produced permanently for the first 3 years of their life… I have come to believe this is a genetic defectiveness.

I recently did 2 long train journeys for the first time in about 20 years. Either people have got worse, or my tolerance has withered and died.

There was one guy who cracked out his Dominos pizza and cans of cider at lunch time. No issue with the pizza, thought it was a smart idea, wished id thought of it myself tbh, but the noises, it was like being on a farmyard. The lip smacking was unreal, he wasn't even close but I could hear him a good half a carriage away. At one point the woman sat next to turned and asked if it was just her... no love, its not!

Other than the chap who jumped on, downed 4 cans of fosters and jumped off at the next stop, leaving his cans and rubbish everywhere, the guy who kicked off because staff had the audacity to check tickets, and the guy having a loud and animated phone call behind my head for 3 hours, the journey was fine.

Actually, im sensing a theme here....

God some people are fucking gross.

That's super weird. Have you never had a cold or hayfever? Some people have conditions that make them snuffle all the time and some have colds or hayfever. They should not be treated like pariahs. Unless you have never had a cold in your life you ought to be able to understand what that entails. If you haven't, you should still realise nose blowing is necessary and have empathy.

There's nothing wrong with blowing your nose- the people who have an issue with that need to grow up.

Constant sniffing very annoying. It's just going to keep dripping back down just sort it. Fine some people have these conditions where they can't help it and we can be mindful of that but I don't believe that's the case for most sniffers.

I agree that sneezing all over the window is disgusting but I once saw a boy put his head out of the old style train window and vomit. The train was moving so it splattered all over the door and along the next window. Unfortunately, a man getting off at the next station didn't notice and he shut the door and put his hand in it. You can imagine the look on his face
