AIBU to expect air freshener in toilets when visiting friends?

Is there an expectation that people's toilets should have an air freshener in? Like a spray air freshener?

We always have air freshener in both our toilets in case friends or family get caught short when visiting us or even to freshen the bathroom after having a wee if necessary, so I hate it if I go to a friend/family members house and they have none.

I get some people may be affected by asthma but surely if you had asthma you wouldn't use it?

We have a glade air freshener at work that sprays into the space where the wash handbasins are for example.

It doesn't reek of horse poo. Horses stables dont smell bad. Its horse poo not dog poo.

Why do you have air freshener in there then? Poor horses having to breathe synthetic shit.

Cassiteiri · 15/09/2026 21:19

Are you quite OK op? "expect"? Don't "expect" things when you go to other people's homes. People aren't the same. Some prefer to open windows, some don't like artificial smells, some like reed diffusers.
More importantly, try not to poo in other people s homes.

It won’t be IN the actual stable, probably a separate building
“the stables” is usually what people call the entire place (stables, fields, house, toilets…)

I’m not posh enough to own a stables so I’ve no idea. But if I did, air freshener wouldn’t be by main priority. A ‘courtesy flush’ is the best way to prevent smells - ie flush as soon as the poo hits the water.

You don’t have to be posh! Guess it’s a kind of catch all, even if I had a horse in a field with one stable I would say “going to the stables/yard”
I much prefer poo pourri as it’s straight in the toilet and doesn’t choke people with the smell

Stil unnecessary chemicals though isn’t it, which are made and packaged and shipped around just to get dropped down the toilet and then have to be filtered out to clean the water. Stuff to pretend your shit doesn’t smell seems to me the height of materialism/waste!

‘Try not to poo in other people’s houses’ - yep there it is. Peak MN.

Normally the worst crime on here is someone having a shit anywhere (including their own home) but mention air freshener and people lose their minds 🤣

I can't believe how many people have replied and how many more have such strong opinions.

Actually it doesn't and afaik I've only ever met one person who's did: a flatmate from hell who stank the bathroom out every morning. She'd use all the hot water in the tank then follow it up with a 20 minute shit before leaving for work. The silly cow didn't even crack the window open to let the condensation or the absolutely rotten stink of her backside out. The ming from her 'cooking' (I use the term loosely) was nausea inducing too. She'd boil cabbage in tinned tomatoes for literally hours every night so I'm not surprised her back end reeked to high heaven. Needless to say I was delighted when that one moved out.

You are seriously saying your shit doesn’t smell?!

of course it does

Everybody loves having their arse sprinkled liberally with cold water!!

It's just denial (or blissful ignorance, if you prefer). It could feature in a new verse of Elvis Ain't Dead by Scouting For Girls!

Never been splashed - I suppose it depends how far your bum descends into the bowl! 😉

So do people with small bums have a disadvantage here? I've never thought about this in any (pun intended)depth!

zingally · 16/09/2026 10:36

I wouldn't have them in my house, because I find that those sorts of aerosols irritate my lungs and make my chest feel tight. Not to mention being horrible for the environment.

Maybe - wider and flatter probably best off, or elbow resters?!

This conundrum has a whiff of ‘penis beaker’ about it.

No it’s so I can actually go when I’m out the house after being berated by someone as a teenager because i used the toilet, and it smelled, she said i was disgusting
After that I refused to use the toilet anywhere outside the house up until I was late thirties when I found the poo pourri stuff and also developed a health issue that means I need to go more

Well that’s upsetting but it is exactly what I’m saying - stuff to make it seem like your shit doesn’t smell. Well it does, and that’s fine, so does mine and everyone else’s. Take comfort in that fact and shit whenever you need to and don’t let anyone make you feel bad about it.

MidnightMeltdown · 17/09/2026 00:29

YABU

Air freshener just smells like you’ve done a poo and tried to cover it up, which is more embarrassing than simply owning the poo imo! Especially since it doesn’t actually get rid of the poo smell. It’s like a really bad disguise 😂.

Seriously, just open a window.

I had this issue too. I was berated for the bathroom smelling after I'd finished. I am as I've said above, confident now that due to being careful with my health, once I've flushed it doesn't smell. But it happened several times when I was a child/teen and for a long time I couldn't 'go' unless I knew the house was empty. I think it contributed to eating disorders in my teens actually. I had a disorder where I totally avoided any foods with fibre, for a long time. I'd only eat chocolate or sweets, I equated using the loo-disgusting. I was very underweight for a time. In fact, pro-ana forums used to have a logo that said 'The more you eat, the more you poo!' as one of their inspirational mantras. It's not uncommon.

That’s interesting actually as I have an ED

BrezhnevsLuxuriantEyebrows · 17/09/2026 11:52

It's not only nasty bullying to berate people for doing poos that smell of poo, but it's also monumentally thick of them. It's especially horrible doing that to a teenager and/or vulnerable person, who might not have the confidence to stand up to them.

If somebody did that to me now - told me that I was disgusting for doing a poo that smelled of poo - I would give them a deeply withering look and ask them condescendingly what they expected poo to smell of... or have they only just discovered the concept of humans pooing?

A friend's mother used to attack him and scream at him when he was a teenager for doing a shit that smelled, presumably, of what it was. Bad menopause but still.

It definitely contributed to mine. More so as I got older, began dating and staying at friends houses etc. If I didn't eat, i didn't need to go to the toilet. So of course, I didn't eat. I began to lose weight, feel better about myself (I had put on a lot of weight as a child due to bullying and being ostracised) so the pattern continued.

I am fit and strong now, but I am still very discreet about the loo compared to many I know. I am however confident that no smells linger.
