To call in sick?

I’m on my first day back at work after 10 days annual leave.

I was walking down the road this morning when I rolled my ankle and fell, I have horrific grazes on my knee and elbow, and my ankle is swelling up hugely and is painful even at rest.

AIBU to turn up, explain what’s happened and go home? When I’m cleaned up I could probably work but I’m in so much pain at the moment I feel sick, I have two fresh grazes that are about to bleed through my clothes and I don’t know whether the adrenaline carried me to the bus or if I can walk.

I hope you feel better soon, OP. Forget the nasty comments here. I had a slight fracture ages ago and it wasn’t easy to move about or concentrate on work for a few weeks. I thankfully have WFH opportunities and was able to work through but that feeling of pain did distract me for a while. Don’t feel bad or guilty that you are taking time to rest and recover when you need it. All the best.

Sereine · 10/09/2026 03:08

Do give yourself a day off work, OP, it's clear you need it. It's not your fault that your employers aren't employing enough people.

jackstini · 10/09/2026 06:55

How did you sleep OP? (Hoping you got some)

I agree would be good to see GP or call 111 to get some better advice on treating it

Poor management of the injury now will just make it take much longer to heal

ruffler45 · 10/09/2026 06:57

I’ve shown my manager. They said I can leave if I want but they wouldn’t recommend

There are still companies with managers with this attitude to health and safety!!
heaven help them

wandawaves · 10/09/2026 09:28

Just adding to the chorus here OP- I have had an avulsion fracture and had a boot, my son has also had the same with a boot.
And conversely, there was once when I badly sprained my ankle, didn't get medical attention, and it took soooo long to be pain free, that I'm now so sure it probably had an avulsion fracture, but it took about 2 years to feel better!

Like the dead!!!I don’t think anyone can help now as the a&e advice was just to treat it like a sprain.

What stuff and nonsense, ridiculous fuss over a broken ankle. Just chop the whole leg off and be done with it. A good long hop to work in the morning will clear your head and set you up for the day.

Absolutely. These snowflakes who claim they can't get to work because they've just lost a leg, eh?? Malingerers the lot of 'em. 😄

Hope you're not in too much pain today, OP, I know fracture pain and swelling can often be worse the next day.

Try reading up a bit on the recognised treatment of a sprain - OP may have an avulsion fracture but this is a result of the forces of the accident. The ligaments will have been badly stretched and stressed if it's caused the fracture of that type.

Because ligaments are involved, bad sprains can take much longer to heal than a simple fracture as the blood supply is much less to ligaments. All advice for even minor sprains is avoid walking on it for up to 72 hours.

As well as having been fairly offensive in a number of different ways. But I’ll leave it now, you know, so I can focus on falling over like a child.

And saying if someone falls over it's being "like a child"? THAT in itself is very offensive! But clearly that was your objective by phrasing it in that way.

Unless you spend all your time when walking looking at the ground in front of you, it's very easy to catch the edge of a lifted up paving stone, or a pavement equivalent of a pot hole, or even to slip if the ground is wet - the weather in the south this past week, combined with the leaves starting to fall from the trees, has made many pavements incredibly slippery.

(1) I have had multiple ankle sprains in my life due to the fact that I have a condition that makes my ligaments and tendons lax. So yes, I know how painful a sprain can be. You should still try to weight-bear as much as possible. And it is not the fracture that is painful but, as you identify, the damage to the soft tissue. The OP berated someone for telling her to get on with it with a fracture. I was pointing out that a fracture of itself of the type mentioned is not going to be painful itself.

(2) The OP said (something like) "who falls over and skins their knees - like a child?". I take exception to that. I fall over comparatively frequently (once every 6 - 8 weeks on average, not including the times I "roll an ankle" but save myself from hitting the deck). It is because my body doesn't work properly. So the answer to the OP's question was children and people whose bodies don't work properly fall and skin their knees. If she thinks that falling as an adult is somehow a fault or unacceptable she needs to sneck up. What happened to her happens to me regularly. It's not a big deal but making someone feel small because they do fall a lot is in my book.

The discharge paperwork just says it’s a sprain, but he said to me it was a fracture. I feel very confused now

I'm sorry you're prone to falls like this, but as you say you're now used to it, so can cope without feeling shocked. For someone who isn't prone to falling, a bad fall can really shake you up and if it results in a fracture, as it has here, OP really does need to let the swelling go down before trying to be more active or she could end up with long-term damage. I speak from bitter experience. My bad fall and resultant minor fracture in my foot still bothers me 20 years later if I stand too long because I stupidly walked on it, instead of resting it as I should have done.

Current advice is not to rest such injuries - which OP's doctor seems to have confirmed to her (she says she needs to weight-bear as much as she is able).

I'm sure that OP's one time falling is so much more shocking and miserable than having to suffer the same physical reaction regularly (and genuine shock is a physiological response. It won't be lessened by repeat exposure. What the OP means is that she wasn't expecting it and this has thrown her. But thanks for minimising my situation - obviously I should just get on with it (which I do) but the OP should take all the time she needs.

I'm actually really disappointed that you would dismiss the impact of regularly falling because it stops being "shocking". You have no idea and I live in pain. The OP has to put up with it for a short period. Get some perspective (you and the OP!).

That is odd. I suspect it might be a sprain? If it was a fracture, I would be very surprised if they didn’t give you a boot. How frustrating for you. I would consider calling them back really to
clarify.

How are you this morning? When I had my fracture, (which I was shown on the x-ray) the first week, it was absolute agony when I got out of bed. Putting my foot on the floor felt like boiling water was rushing into my ankle. I am definitely one of life’s Stoics but oh my gosh that was painful.

Very sorry and bruised!! I’m in a lot of pain. The nurse I saw was very dismissive and I think didn’t want to be there. He was quite rude! So I’m not sure what’s gone on

wtf?? Woah

ok

iminpain · 10/09/2026 10:02

The nurse I saw was very almost angry that I had come in? I sat down and he said “well what makes you think it’s a fracture and not a sprain? Because a&e isn’t for a sprain” and I explained because of the pain and the swelling, he told me because the pain was radiating it’s not a fracture.

Then he came back after the x ray and told me it was a fracture “but it’s not what you’re thinking, it’s not bad and you’re not getting a cast” and left me to it.

At some point, you need to put in a complaint about his behaviour/attitude and get a second opinion (somehow!) Might be easier said than done but think this is something you are able to do
Arnica cream and tablets are very good for helping your body heal - alongside supports, crutches etc.

EarringsandLipstick · 10/09/2026 10:08

@iminpain you poor thing.

I read all your posts, which included your replies to some very insensitive and unhelpful posts on this thread.

Of course, you shouldn't have worked yesterday, that was an awful thing to happen, and you would be quite shaken, even without the fracture.

I'm so sorry that you work somewhere that would try to prevent you seeking medical help; if I met anyone in my work place in that situation, we would be paying for a taxi home / A&E, and in the meantime, ensuring we did what we could to help. We'd also advise taking some time off until they felt fully better.

In terms of your A&E treatment, that sounds so shoddy. Please do go back to your GP, and get a referral to a fracture clinic or someone who can properly advise. You've had a proper injury, and especially with relation to your foot, you don't want it to improperly heal or be left with stiffness / weakness which could impact you in lots of practical ways in the years ahead. I've absolutely seen this happen. It doesn't have to be a serious injury for this to be the case.

And please, get signed off work for a few days! Mind yourself, you've had a horrible experience.

iminpain · 10/09/2026 10:12

My only worry is, the GP has been told it’s a sprain. So I look like I’m lying.

Go to work, let your lovely colleagues look after you, when safely there take off your dick and look at the injury, you might need an xray, is there a minor injuries unit nearby? Do any of your colleagues drive to work?

this wasn’t your fault, it’s ok to cry, get looked after

OP I hope this typo gives you as much of a giggle as it did me on an otherwise bad day.

Just say that isn't what you've been told! Maybe they can then refer you back to get it properly checked out!

LongDarkTeatime · 10/09/2026 10:23

Contact the PALS (Patient Advice and Liaison Service) at the hospital as soon as possible. Raise a concern that the written diagnosis differs from what you were told verbally: it is written you had a sprain but you were told you had the specific fracture. This matters because it may influence ongoing care and outcome. Let them know all this and ask for a rapid response to help guide your recovery. This should give you written evidence for your GP and ongoing care.

Contacting PALS is not a complaint, it is raising a concern. As others have said this should be raised as you need clarification and the attitude needs to be noted as it could indicate the outcome of under resourcing (leading to a decrease in the level of care) and give A&E evidence to get more staff.

Agree with this.
I'd complain about the rude dismissive nurse too though. I don't know what's wrong with some people. He behaved really badly.
