What has JK Rowling said or done that’s transphobic

1000 replies

Ducketta · 08/09/2026 13:26

Another thread has said that they don’t want their thread to be derailed. Y HK Rowling and morals, so I’ll start one. Can anyone please tell me what JK Rowling has ever said or done that’s transphobic? Please be specific and outline how she has been offensive to trans people and not just been protective women and girls hard fought right to separate single sex spaces.

I cannot find anything whatsoever that she has done wrong. Nothing. Nada. And yet this JK Rowling = queen of transphobia myth persists. And it’s bloody tiresome.

It's not that it "doesn't prove without a doubt" it's that you literally cannot extrapolate from one to the other. It's not evidence of anything except characteristics of the prison population.

(Even if there were evidence that TW offend at higher rates than other groups , I don't accept your assumptions about the policy conclusions that would follow from that. I don't accept that policing entry to toilets based on the assumed shape of someone's genitals is rationally connected to safeguarding ).

Edited

It's not based on genitals.
It's based on the male body.
Not the brain, the body, all of it.

Please can you define gender identity?

The recognition/ perception/ awareness of self as male or female

Just dropping in with some evidence links in case of interest- always good to give facts an airing! (These poor kids with dads who decide in middle age they're women and want access to girls undressing ! )

Think there's MoJ stats somewhere demonstrating the high % of men who ID as women who are convicted sex offenders in prison- massively higher than women, but tons higher than other men too! I expect another mumsnetter can post the link.

A big risk factor for sex offending regarding men who ID as trans / say they have a womanly gender identity belief (whatever that is) appears to be sexual paraphilias, which increases the risk of them being sex offenders too. Lots of research evidence of the link between paraphiliacs and sex offending( paedophilia, lactophilia, voyeurism etc) . Unfortunately no evidence at all of how women can tell the paraphiliacs from any other man who Ids as trans/ woman (not that it makes any difference to many women- a key point of having human rights for women is we don't have to share intimate spaces with men, however much they want to be there!).

But facts are clearly transphobic...

We can all see who the men are- no genital inspections required ! We just need men -whether trans or paraphiliac or not -to stay out of female spaces- so women can access them safety and in privacy (including the women and girls who've been raped and assaulted by men who ID as women, which sadly seems to happen surprisingly often).

StSpiridian · 11/09/2026 16:29

the post hidden above is a lot of evidence links. Actual facts and research about male offending when those males say they're trans.

It is not remotely misogynistic to recognise that trans people’s experiences are real.

On the other hand calling a woman a 'pick me' because they disagree with you, is a highly misogynistic way of dismissing her.

It is not misogynistic to describe trans people's experiences as real to them.

It is however deeply misogynistic to insist that these self-reported experiences have more validity than the self reported and statsitically evidenced experiences of female people when it comes to what being a women means and entails.

And it is stunningly, unbelievably, super-nova-sizedly misogynistic to take the name of the female half of humanity, and with it our ability to speak to our history, share our experiences and politic for our needs as female people, and redeploy it to label a mixed-sex group of people who are assumed to share a common sense of gender based on nothing more than the self reported and often deeply contradictory feelings, experiences and assumptions of the very small number of people who identify as trans.

This is, of course, using misogyny in its traditional sense of hatred of, contempt for, or ingrained prejudice against the female half of humanity, regardless of what name you may or may not allow currently be allowing those people to bear.

The recognition/ perception/ awareness of self as male or female

How does that relate to the objective fact of being physically male or female?

Is there any actual connection between a trans women's perception of self as female and the female body that others have but he does not?

Aside from assumptions about how they may or may not recognise / perceive / be aware of self as female, is there anything objective he has in common with female people that we do not have in common with other men as well that justifies making us into one social or legal group?

Again. These are prison statistics. They tell you about the characteristics of people in the prison population. You cannot use this evidence to draw inferences about rates of offending in the general population of trans women. That is not a valid or meaningful use of statistical inference.

No, but any unsure people that stumble upon the thread will be blinded by the sunlight 😎

StSpiridian · 11/09/2026 16:44

No they are not all prison stats. Stats are helpful however even if you find them inconvenient! Suggest you read the links (!)- I know facts and evidence are hard, but reading will help develop your understanding (and maybe even a bit of compassion for women and girls who are victims of these men/ 'transwomen').

Why not? More trans people in prisons = more trans offenders, no?

Me neither. However, what I have been trying to get an explanation of is why (for those who do believe there is an innate property called 'gender') it is the only 'innate property' (of the human personality or mind or identity) that is sometimes so out of whack with the body it requires the body to be brought into line. What's so special about the thing people are calling 'gender'?

Very good point!

As far as I can see all of the evidence from uk is based on prison stats, there seems to be one Swedish study, also will a small not- representative sample of individuals selected in 1973. It also appears not to measure sexual offending as a separate outcome.

Dearie me @Lacksie , you don't seem able or want to read the evidence links! (eg of abuse and sexual deviancy of their dads eg from the UK Children of Transitioners group )

Thinking about it, didn't the ECHR just rule against an abusive UK transparent who wanted to abuse the human rights of these UK children..will try and find that link too...

BackToLurk · 11/09/2026 16:51

We don’t know the rates of offending in either population. Prison statistics do not provide evidence of this. As I stated previously, it may well be the case that trans women offend more than trans men, and there may be reasons for this, but you cannot establish population offending rates by comparing two tiny, highly selected groups of people who are already in prison.

But how would someone know if they are male or female? You’ve said it’s not down to anatomy, which is why you claim males “know they are female despite having male bodies”, so what is it?

Individual testimonies from a campaigns group is not evidence of prevalence of offending among a wider population,
