AIBU to want payment for fitted items left in my rental?

If you're asking anyone for payment it should be the landlord. It's their house, the new tenants are only renting the place! Why have you added permanent fixtures to a house that you don't own anyway?

Your lucky the landlord isn't going to charge you the costs of him getting someone in to remove them and make good.

I would call these sunk costs - they have no impact on your decision (ie. not getting the money will not stop you moving out).

You could just as well argue that you are joy-riding to get a subsidy on items you valued enough to pay for in full at the time.

We had an outdoor socket fitted to our last rental and seriously considered getting it taken back out and fitting the hole as we didn’t want the landlord to charge us for it putting right. In the end we left it but certainly didn’t attempt to charge them for it.

Presumably you got permission from the landlord to add an extra loo?! Etc. This is between you and the landlord. This has nothing to do with the new tenants and it's quite frankly cheeky and odd to ask them to reimburse you. You take the hit or you take it with you, but putting it back to how it was when you moved in, which I would hope was your land lords condition of allowing you to do this.

As a new tenant I wouldn’t pay money for a toilet and wardrobes, they will never be mine they belong with the property. I’d say this issue is between you and the landlord and nothing to do with the new tenants.

Just to add a different perspective to this: when you rent a place in Germany, you rent it completely empty. No kitchen, no lightbulbs, no curtain rails, often no carpet (you do get a bath/shower room). Anything left in the flat from the previous owner has to be bought off them before you can move in - if you refuse to buy their fitted kitchen, they offer the flat to the next person on the list.

That‘s certainly not the norm in the UK, but OPs question would be answered very differently in Germany 😂.

Just because you can't or don't want to take something with you it doesn't mean that the next person to live there has to pay for it!

If you wanted them, you should have removed them and took them with you

When you say you fitted ‘extra’ curtain rails, were there none there to start with or do you mean you replaced the existing ones?
What about the loo, surely you didn’t literally add in an extra one? Did you get the landlord’s permission to do these things? Sometimes tenants ask to do things, and say they’ll leave them when they move on, but it’s very unusual to be allowed to make changes and then expect to remove the things you have changed.

Of course not. The landlord should have replaced the toilet if it was faulty and you’re a fool for putting built ins yourself (and if I was the landlord I’d be furious if you’d done anything without permission) or leaving things that could be removed. It has nothing to do with the new tenant. The person you should have asked for payment (before it was done), is the landlord.

Leave the items or remove and make good at your own expense are your options. Do you expect every future tenant to pay the previous tenant for leaving the items?

If you had left them in my rental I would charge you some of your deposit for putting it right. The reason being you are not allowed to put and permanent fixtures in the property without specific permission, and if you do you need to return it to the state it was before it had the items at the end of tenancy... I charged a tenant for adding decking and a shed to the garden and cupboards to the toilets- as I don't know what state the work has been done to it may proce to be a H&S issue

Why would new tenants pay? It’s not a house sale! You should of had this conversation with your LL, told him about the fixtures and ask would he like you to leave them for a cost or if he didn’t want them you should of removed the items and replaced with the originals. So you should take the hit on this one unfortunately and walk away with nothing

The landlord could charge you for removing them so I think you're taking the piss abit. You don't install a toilet in someone else's house then charge them for it

I wouldn't expect the tenants to pay. I doubt the landlord would want to pay now, perhaps if you had discussed with the landlord at the time work was being carried out but I'd imagine it's too late now.

Thr only person you should approach to pay forv them is your landlord because hes the onecl who will ultimately benefit from it. When the new tenants leave are they supposed to then ask the next tenants to buy the items off them too?

They are not being unreasonable to not want to pay you.

You chose to do these things. If it's enhanced the property the landlord could give a token payment but then again why would they pay either.
Either you absorb the cost or remove yourself and make right.

V unusual so probably hadnt budgeted for it , miving is v expensive

Don’t think it’s reasonable for the new tenants to have to pay for something like a toilet. Either the landlord pays or you just leave it or take ot with you
