AIBU to question people claiming they would happily pay more tax?

Yet another thread about should there be tax rises or spending cuts, and invariably you get a host of people coming out saying they are happy to pay more. Well you can https://www.gov.uk/guidance/voluntary-payments-donations-to-government

I’m pretty sure what they actually mean is I am happy to pay a tiny amount more on the understanding others will pay a lot more and then I’ll see the benefit. If that assumption is wrong why aren’t all these people saying they’re happy to pay more doing it?

Voluntary payments / donations to government

Find out how to make a voluntary contribution to government.

Aren’t there toll booths in some places? People do pay.

Yes, some places, but surely you see how that's different to every single road being pay per use? And roads that aren't used much will either have to have unaffordable tolls or no road at all, because private developers are very unlikely to run a road at a loss.

Natsku · 09/09/2026 03:52

PhoebeBuffays · 08/09/2026 19:54

It pays for the price of using the road? It actually helps correct market failure. It's great.

You pay for how much you drive and use the road.

Again, what about people on lower incomes who can't afford road fees? What about roads that won't generate a profit so won't be maintained? Would you like it if there was no road to your house because not enough people drive there to make it worthwhile?

Every state in the USA is different. My friends in Boston are proud of the healthcare they get and desperately don't want the NHS.

Bet if they went bankrupt after a particularly bad luck run of health issues they'd be begging for the NHS (and I don't even think the NHS is good anymore, and much prefer the mixed system in my country but one very good thing about it is that you never need to worry if you can afford to go to the doctor or call an ambulance)

Then they’re clearly very wealthy and probably don’t have complex health needs. The NHS is amazing for acute illness. My personal experience of cancer care and treatment is exceptional, had it happened in the US it would have wiped us out financially.

Because it wouldn’t be enough to make any difference. It’s been spelt out for you enough times.

You say it wouldn’t make any difference, but then we hear things like this, https://www.theguardian.com/news/2026/may/13/three-quarters-uk-millionaires-willing-pay-more-tax-research-finds; where apparently 75% of millionaires are happy to pay more. Would it really make no difference if this 75% that claim they’d be happy to pay more took it upon themselves to pay an extra 1% of their income voluntarily?
The fact is they will say it to a pollster because it makes them feel good, but they actually won’t do it. Many will be actively employing accountants to reduce their tax burden.

Yes I’ve seen that repeated a fair few times on here. Apparently they’re keen.

Great let them join up with the others who are keen too.

So I don't really agree with the premise of the original post. I know of not one single person (nor poster) who has ever said "I'm happy to pay more tax and i don't care one jot what the government spend it on, they can spend it on parties at Westminster for all I care, where do I click". However I know plenty of people who would be willing to pay more under specific parameters, as we've seen here. For me I would willingly pay (even) more, if there was commitment to wholescale reform of the NHS, but I'm not willing to pay more to find the ongoing wastage and still not be able to get very sick relatives access to decent healthcare, let alone get any kind of healthcare at all for myself.

The link and your original post is asking people to donate with no accountability from anybody as to how it is spent. Most people quite reasonably won't do that because it would be frankly quite idiotic to do so, and you'd do as well just giving tenners to random strangers in the street in the hope that one of them one day might use it for good deeds.

They're regular middle class. I'm glad you had good cancer care here. Often NHS delays mean people with cancer have it spread and metastasise

BIossomtoes · 09/09/2026 07:24

Most people have good cancer care here. We’re at the age when we quite frequently have friends and acquaintances with a diagnosis. Because of the skill and timely intervention of NHS professionals the outcome is usually positive. Bad outcomes are because many cancers are symptomless - pancreatic, liver and ovarian cancer are notorious for this, by the time symptoms manifest it’s too late.

But that isn't how democracy works? None of us agree entirely with any political party's policies and often there are some that we whole heartedly disagree with. We have to vote for the party that is best fit for us and hope they gain power. If you start to demand that you will only pay more tax if the state spends it on exactly what you want then in reality you simply aren't happy to pay more tax. There will always be something that they are spending money on that you disagree with.

They can't afford roads fees, so can they really afford a car and to drive then?

I'm pretty sure all the data shows that private roads are better maintained and have less potholes.

The market price will be set at whatever it is to recover costs.

Humerdu · 09/09/2026 09:29

I find the ‘it’s the NHS or the US healthcare insurance system’ idea really frustrating. European healthcare systems are streets ahead of ours - not least in cancer survival rates, and yet the government refuses to consider proper reform to the funding mentors, and we blunder on with simply dire healthcare. I’m in Scotland where CAMHS has long since ceased to exist and a friend who’s child has attempted suicide on numerous occasions is borrowing from family to fund private treatment because there is just none available on the NHS. It’s outrageous.

Can we have a look at that data? Can you link to it? And yes, people can afford to drive because they pay through their taxes. That’s why tax exists so everyone’s money combines so that everyone can access essential services, not just the financial elite.

Instead of paying through taxes (a form of theft) people can pay for things via the voluntary market. Roads can all be easily done privately. We didn't need the government for cars, roads aren't all that difficult. Electronic road pricing is literally a thing.

MyLemonPoet · 09/09/2026 10:40

Anyone saying they are happy to pay more are clearly oblivious to the ridiculous amount of waste and mismanagement of taxes by the government.

Sweetpeasaremadeforbees · 09/09/2026 10:54

Why on earth would anyone want to pay more tax? The government pays billions a year in interest on the money it has borrowed. Any extra taxes it raises sure won't be going on improving services for the majority.

Yes but it’s virtue signalling at its finest. If they wanted to do it, they would just quietly do it. It fools nobody.

I think they’re quoting the usual response on why no more can be paid.

Tax isn’t theft. Where’s the data you referenced?
