The film Angel Face - Robert Mitchum and Jean Simmons 1952

During the start he is describing his girlfriend and mentions she is 105lbs

I thought I'd misheard and maybe it was 125lbs but no, 105lbs

Thats 7 and a half stone.

Seems very tiny but AI tells me that is the usual sort of frame and weight to height ratio for actresses in those days. The actress playing the girlfriend was 5'4 apparently. So slight frame but not underweight

I was a bit surprised it was so low a weight.

@poppymango , why is it difficult not to? Just don't buy them.

Gee, why didn't I think of that.

I've no idea. I'd have thought it was obvious.

Just to be clear, I was being sarcastic.

women were more slender. maybe wars. less junk food. more garden to table type food. im surprised you are surprised.

BibbityBoppityTwo · Yesterday 06:55

I’m a size 8-10, I wear some of my grandmother’s dresses from back then, they are all size 14 and they fit perfectly.

FastFood · Yesterday 07:03

Thats my weight for 5ft5, I don't think its that odd.

BluesBird19764 · Yesterday 08:02

lots of reminders that people can be naturally very petite, very slim. It’s normal for them and totally healthy which should be respected. So as a women who is considered tall, who has broad shoulders and hips, who maintained a size 14 from secondary school to menopause unless under starvation/pregnancy. Why is it not considered my natural size? I am healthier than many women my age but am told I need to work harder, eat less, try this or try that and current trends are only going to make it harder for young women with my natural shape.

Pyjamatimenow · Yesterday 08:12

I’m 5ft 10 and 145lbs -just adding that in for context as it seems important

Jean Simmons was tiny, these days we call it petite. When I was that age I weighed 7st too and was completely healthy, never dieting etc.
I think we all just got bigger over the decades, its why there are ALWAYS size 10 & 12 left on clothes websites!

There used to be an advert in the 80s, I can’t remember what it was for. Maybe weight watchers? But a woman was horrified that she was 9 st 2. I think many of us would love to be 9 st 2 these days, I know I would.

As I said in my reply to OP, I was 7st in my teens and twenties.8st in my 30s & 40s. Then ...middleage Arrggh!
It is perfectly normal to be that weight and healthy, think we all just bigger over the decades.

My mum was 5 foot in her younger years (shrank to 4 foot 9 over time) and never weighed over 7 stone. Imagine her horror at her hardy enormous daughter (me) at 5 foot 4 and over 10 stone wearing a size 12. Neither her nor my tiny aunts ever got over the enormity of me and my sisters. 😂

Oh, please tell me how you find size 12 clothes to fit at 10st. When I reached 10st I struggled to get in a 16! 😁

7and A half stone at 5 ft 4 is a bmi of 18 and is underweight and was at the time.

BMI has recently been discredited as not the full picture. It doesn't take into account age or build, which when calculated for me would necessitate me being a skeleton!

Grendel7 · Yesterday 11:47

Nincompoo · 01/09/2026 13:29

i’m that height and haven’t been 7 stone since I was 18. I’d look like skeletor at that weight now.

Women were slimmer back in the day. They all survived on coffee, fags and benzo’s…actresses anyway

No,we didn't. I have never smoked or taken drugs/drink,was just naturally 7st. People seem to think you had to be an underweight actress,I was neither.

Backedoffhackedoff · 01/09/2026 13:39

Average Hollywood actress = anorexic, let’s be honest. They’re probably not dissimilar weights now

They weren't anorexic then. Obsession with weight and pouting on selfies like a floosy are, thankfully more recent problems.

Grendel7 · Yesterday 11:51

likelysuspect · 01/09/2026 13:44

Yes I wondered that, AI told me the actress is Mona Freeman and she was 'thin but realistic for the time'

Thought OP said Jean Simmons??

Grendel7 · Yesterday 11:52

likelysuspect · 01/09/2026 13:46

She doesnt look anorexic, she has normal looking arms and no lollypop head.

So perhaps like other said, her weight isnt what is in the script.

Lollypop head, love that!😂

HobgoblinNorFoulFiend · 01/09/2026 13:50

This. I’m 5ft 10 and haven’t weighed less than 9stone since I was at school. I take a size 8 shoe. I’m female, but I’m pretty certain I would not have got work as an actress back in the day.

Edit to add I’m astonished that 5’4 is average height. I don’t know these tiny people. Everyone I know is around my height.

Edited

Perhaps thats why most clothes companies refuse to do a petite range. I am 5ft and struggle to get nice clothes as even petite is for 5ft 3!! Most women I know are well under 5 3, I only know one who is 5ft 6 who seems giant to me.

Grendel7 · Yesterday 11:57

Backedoffhackedoff · 01/09/2026 13:52

As another poster said, it’s underweight now and was underweight then

This new BMI craze would disagree. I am supposed to be 7st 4 for my height yet at my age I would look skeletal.

Grendel7 · Yesterday 11:59

TemporarilyCantDoMyself · 01/09/2026 13:57

@likelysuspect according to Google Mona Freeman wasn't 5ft 4 she was just under 5ft 1 and a half inches! 1.56 metres.

So why even mention Jean Simmons!!!

Grendel7 · Yesterday 12:01

Maray1967 · 01/09/2026 13:58

I’m that height and was bang on 8 stone when I was 18-21. 8.5 by late 20s, and I was by no means the slimmest girl in my class. I had a uni friend who was not allowed to give blood as she was considered underweight but seemed perfectly healthy and active to me.

I was never allowed to give blood as I was underweight. Was up to 9st at 9 months pregnant, lost that afterwards yet now "magic bmi" says I am overweight! Huh? Someone must be wrong!

Hollywood actresses wouldn’t have been subject to rationing?!

Everyone was! You had a ration book and simply could not buy anything more than your ration. They had to do it because the "me first" types have always existed and were pushing to the front to get all the food. You remember covid; same thing,we all saw people with trollies full of loo roll with another family member going separately thru checkout with yet more like their need was greater than yours. Thats why rationing happened for everyone in UK, can't speak for other countries.

Just different body shapes and body composition.
I'm 11 stone and wear roughly an 8 to 10 on top and a 12 bottom, quite variable between shops though eg M&S is massive.

A Hollywood actress, living in the US, would have been restricted to just what a British woman would have had access to? In addition, anybody with the income would have been able to legally bypass restrictions in either country - eating in restaurants, having lobster instead of beef, purchasing wild game, etc.

Build.

at 10st I am a comfortable size 12. I wear mostly size 12 now at 10.5 st.

i am naturally muscular and strong, and muscle is denser than fat so takes up less space. Add to that I am a Mesomorph, a very traditional hour glass shape. I also have dense strong bones as a consequence of genetics and the larger muscle mass, so I weigh “heavy”. If I put on weight it distributes evenly so it takes a good couple of stone either way before I visually look bigger or smaller. I lost 2 stone after covid and no one noticed.

As a teen in the 90’s the Kate Moss trend was big and I lost weight to fit that aesthetic. I got to 8 st by surviving on 800 calories a day and a lot of exercise, and still didn’t look “waif like”. I just looked strong with a low body fat, probably not much different to some of the female influencers with a “6-pack” you see today. Still an- admittedly small- size 10 at that point. I don’t think I could have lost any more weight without a full blown ED or seriously damaging my health.

i work in a physical industry, and you’d be suprised at the weights of some of the women. They’re not super fit gym bodies, but they are on the go and moving all day every day. 12 st is not unusual, and these women look in great shape- I wouldn’t say bigger than a 12 there either.
