She weighs 105lbs...

The film Angel Face - Robert Mitchum and Jean Simmons 1952

During the start he is describing his girlfriend and mentions she is 105lbs

I thought I'd misheard and maybe it was 125lbs but no, 105lbs

Thats 7 and a half stone.

Seems very tiny but AI tells me that is the usual sort of frame and weight to height ratio for actresses in those days. The actress playing the girlfriend was 5'4 apparently. So slight frame but not underweight

I was a bit surprised it was so low a weight.

There’s a scene in Batman (1989) where Batman asks Kim Basinger how much she weighs before using his grapple hook to get away. They escape but when they land he tells her that she must weigh more than 108lb as if that’s shocking for a 5 foot 7 woman. That was the first time I noticed that kind of detail in a movie.

Yes, I remember that — he asks her before they go on the rope how much she weighs and guesses a weight in pounds, and she’s annoyed and corrects him down to a lower weight as if he’s fat-shaming her, and after they land he tells her she weighs more than she’d claimed!

DFOD, my point was actually that I’m not particularly skinny.

I find it very hard to believe than anyone looked “desperately skinny” at that height/weight.

I'll fuck off as fast as my power chair can take me - think it's capped at 4 mph - that fast enough for you? 😁

That has got to be the teeny tiny brag of the century! 🤣🤣🤣

You must have quite a big frame as I’m the same height, and only weighed 8 stone 13 when I was pregnant.

Christ alive. I was 5'1" (I've shrunk a bit since) in my late teens and weighed 8 at 4 lb. At the time I thought I was an enormous heifer, in the way most/all teenagers think they're fat. In later life I looked back and realised that I wasn't that big after all. That is, until I read this thread, which has made me realise that I was a big fat lump after all. Gotta love the internet. 🤣

I'm 5ft 4 and currently as of today, 9st 12lb and a size 12. I was 8st 13lb at my lowest and a size 8. I looked desperately skinny save for my loose skin on my stomach from having many children.

I'm 5'4" and in my youth ( about 21) managed to get to 8 stone. I couldn't maintain it, I was eating practically nothing, and soon went back to 9 stone 2.
But even at 8 stone, I still had a rounded tummy, and did not look even slightly skinny. I was a size 12. I reckon at 7.5 stone, I would not have looked skeletal at all.

You’re right. I’m 5’4, 7 stone 10, which I have been thereabouts since I was 18.

I’m not skinny though, and since menopause have a rounded tummy.

There used to be an advert in the 80s, I can’t remember what it was for. Maybe weight watchers? But a woman was horrified that she was 9 st 2. I think many of us would love to be 9 st 2 these days, I know I would.

I joined weight watchers (for the first time) in my late teens/early twenties as I'd gone over 9 st in weight.

5ft1.5 ;)

I was 7.5 stone or under into well into my later 20's.

Not much over 8 at 50.

5ft 1 and 5ft 4 are a lot different at the same weight. Half a stone per inch roughly.

@NancyThompson well having been 4’11” and 248lb earlier in my life I can tell you that no I didn’t consider myself curvy, but morbidly obese ( which I was ) when I lost the weight, I discovered I had a tiny frame and I consider curvy in the old fashioned way, decent bust, tiny waist, decent sized hips. That’s always been what curvy meant to me whether I was obese or a healthy weight

@MyrtlethePurpleTurtle , I agree. Someone described me as curvy and given that I am scraggy I can only think they meant I am not flat-chested, but it made me think that it would have sounded like 'you're huge' otherwise.

MyrtlethePurpleTurtle · Yesterday 14:03

NancyThompson · Yesterday 13:33

Out of interest, do you also find that the term "curvy" has been a bit appropriated as a euphamism to mean bigger/overweight?

Sometimes even a euphemism for ‘morbidly obese’

I was never allowed to give blood as I was underweight. Was up to 9st at 9 months pregnant, lost that afterwards yet now "magic bmi" says I am overweight! Huh? Someone must be wrong!

The test for not being able to give blood is not related to BMI as such. There is an absolute cut off in that you need to weigh between 7 stone 12 lbs (50kg) and 25 stone (158kg) - and age cut offs as well. And clearly 7st 12lbs isn’t underweight for shorties such as myself.

And if you are a woman under 20 and weigh under 10st 3lb (65kg) or are under 5' 6" (168cm) tall, they actually need to check you have enough blood to donate safely 😮 . The NHS website states that the calculation uses your height weight but is different to BMI (body mass index).

This new BMI craze would disagree. I am supposed to be 7st 4 for my height yet at my age I would look skeletal.

I suspect your BMI is not supposed to be 7st 4lb but within a range of a couple of stone. I forget the precise details but my BMI range is a banding between 6 stone something and 9 stone something

MyrtlethePurpleTurtle · Yesterday 13:48

Grendel7 · Yesterday 11:55

Perhaps thats why most clothes companies refuse to do a petite range. I am 5ft and struggle to get nice clothes as even petite is for 5ft 3!! Most women I know are well under 5 3, I only know one who is 5ft 6 who seems giant to me.

Just to say that I find the Petite ranges in Fatface, Seasalt and Next excellent (5’1” shortie here)

NancyThompson · Yesterday 13:47

MiaKulper · Yesterday 13:41

Petite is now pretty much a word for short not 'small and dainty' and curvy for 'obese with ample boobs and bum'.
Probably better to use a different expression if you want to say someone
has a delicate frame or an hourglass figure.

Yes as I see petite size 18's stocked in various shops, it does just seem to mean shorter than average now.

DH described me as "curvy" to a colleague not long after we got together. I then met her, and the next day at work she said to him "She's not fat! You said she was fat!".

Oh, please tell me how you find size 12 clothes to fit at 10st. When I reached 10st I struggled to get in a 16! 😁

Build.

at 10st I am a comfortable size 12. I wear mostly size 12 now at 10.5 st.

i am naturally muscular and strong, and muscle is denser than fat so takes up less space. Add to that I am a Mesomorph, a very traditional hour glass shape. I also have dense strong bones as a consequence of genetics and the larger muscle mass, so I weigh “heavy”. If I put on weight it distributes evenly so it takes a good couple of stone either way before I visually look bigger or smaller. I lost 2 stone after covid and no one noticed.

As a teen in the 90’s the Kate Moss trend was big and I lost weight to fit that aesthetic. I got to 8 st by surviving on 800 calories a day and a lot of exercise, and still didn’t look “waif like”. I just looked strong with a low body fat, probably not much different to some of the female influencers with a “6-pack” you see today. Still an- admittedly small- size 10 at that point. I don’t think I could have lost any more weight without a full blown ED or seriously damaging my health.

i work in a physical industry, and you’d be suprised at the weights of some of the women. They’re not super fit gym bodies, but they are on the go and moving all day every day. 12 st is not unusual, and these women look in great shape- I wouldn’t say bigger than a 12 there either.
