I found out my wife and my best friend had a physical relationship before we got married, I don't know how to react

jhkyg · 30/08/2026 09:15

I genuinely don't know what to write or how I'm supposed to react to this.

My wife and I are both in our mid 40s. My best friend is also the same age. He has been my best friend since childhood. He's the godfather to our children, and my wife and I are godparents to his children.

For a bit more context, my wife and he are also very close friends. They actually knew each other before I knew either of them, and they've always had a very good friendship

Our families are extremely close. We normally see each other every week for breakfast or a BBQ in one of our gardens. We go on family trips together, celebrate birthdays and holidays together, and our children are all teenagers and are basically like cousins.

My wife and I have a genuinely good marriage. We've been together for decades, we love each other, we're financially comfortable, and as far as I knew there was absolutely nothing wrong between us.

Then on Friday night, my best friend told me he needed to confess something that had happened a very long time ago.

He told me that when we were 18, during a six month breakup between me and my now wife, he and my wife had a sexual relationship for around 2–3 months.

I honestly felt physically sick when he told me.

I didn't know how to react. I cried. He just stood there and kept telling me that it ended years ago, that nothing had happened since, and that I shouldn't be angry with my wife because we weren't together at the time.

I got angry with him and told him I didn't want him to contact me again. Then I went home.

For context, yes, I broke up with my wife when we were 18. I was an idiot teenager and I broke her heart. That's on me. We were apart for about six months, then eventually got back together. We've been solid ever since.

In all those years, I've never had a reason to believe she was cheating on me. Not once.

Yesterday, I told my wife what he'd confessed. At first she said she had kept it from me because she didn't want to lose me. She apologised for hiding it.

She confirmed that they had been together for around three months while we were broken up. She said they eventually stopped because they realised remaining friends was better for them, and then around three months later, she and I got back together.

But then she also told me that technically it was none of my business who she slept with while we were broken up. It was her body and she was single. If this had been some random person she slept with during those six months, I probably wouldn't care now.

But it wasn't some random person. It was my best friend. The man who stood beside me as my best man at our wedding. I've trusted for most of my life. I've allowed into my home every week. That man who is godfather to my children.

And they've both known about this for 26 years while I had absolutely no idea. That's the part I can't get past. I keep thinking about every BBQ, every family holiday, every time the four of us have sat together talking, and wondering whether they were both looking at each other and remembering something I didn't know. My wife keeps saying that nothing happened during our relationship and that she has loved me all these years. And honestly, I believe her But something has changed in my head. I can't look at my friend the same way anymore. I can't even look at their friendship the same way.

Part of me wants to completely cut him and his family out of our lives. No more breakfasts, no more BBQs, no more holidays together. I don't want my children caught in the middle, but at the same time I don't know how I'm supposed to carry on having him around as if nothing happened.

And then there's my wife. I know technically she didn't cheat on me. We were broken up.
But she deliberately kept this from me for 26 years, and so did he. I'm struggling with the fact that two of the people I trusted most in the world knew something incredibly significant about my own life that I didn't know. I don't know whether I'm overreacting because it happened so long ago, or whether the fact that it was my best friend and was deliberately kept secret makes this completely different.

But right now I feel hurt, betrayed, embarrassed and honestly a bit stupid and Jealousy so much

I would be devastated - you poor thing, must be such a shock

ReadingSoManyThreads · 30/08/2026 18:21

Don't let your ego ruin a good marriage and friendship.

They've done nothing wrong.

SunshineAndFizz · 30/08/2026 18:22

What an overreaction. Who remembers who they were dating 26 years ago. It’s another lifetime.

You’re reacting as if it happened recently. The length of time, ages and the fact you were broken up makes a huge difference.

Twinbabymum · 30/08/2026 18:24

I understand the shock and initial annoyance. However you were literally teenagers when this stuff happened. You’ve had decades of friendship and romance. Don’t throw that away, it sounds like you have the friendship people often dream of where your families mingle so well.

I’d probably have a heart to heart with your friend, ask why they kept it secret and why he felt it needed to come out now. Speak to your wife one last time and just say you don’t want anymore secrets like this and then leave it.

Move on, you would be cutting your nose of to spite your face if you ended up such a longstanding friendship after decades over teenage nonsense. Everything marriage, babies and life celebrations are far more significant than something long ago.

Also you dumped her so she did nothing wrong and nor did your friend really.

Sunnibee · 30/08/2026 16:59

you're full of shit

how polite.

I fully agree with you that everyone is entitled to their own boundaries, which is precisely why OP's wife is entitled to hers. She is under no obligation whatsoever to disclose intimate details of her past sexual history with her husband if she chooses not to.

When she's sleeping with his best friend, and close enough for OP to consider DNA test, full disclosure might be warranted.

oviraptor21 · 30/08/2026 18:25

I'm with you OP. Whilst what your wife did while you were not together was not unreasonable, to allow you to choose your best friend/her ex as best man and godfather was unforgivable.

It would have been better for all concerned if she had come clean right at the beginning - and hoped you would be able to see past that. Certainly with maturity I would expect most people to be accepting that she was very hurt and acting slightly irrationally by choosing to have sex with the very person who would hurt you most.

But to then not tell you at the stage when you were choosing a best man and a godfather is unforgivable of both of them. They should have discussed between themselves and worked out a way of telling you. The fact that they didn't would concern me and I just don't believe that so many PP would be so chilled about it if it happened to them.

foursquares · 30/08/2026 18:31

Zerosleep · 30/08/2026 18:08

I think your wife is correct, what she did while you were not together is none of your business and was upto her. There is no cheating as you weren’t together and that was it.

What is hugely deceitful though is both of them not coming clean a long time ago and being open about the fact their were physical/seeing each other. It may be useful to see a counselor and try and work through what you are feeling before it eats away at you. I think you can come through this. But don’t make any rash decisions until you have had time to work it through.

So sorry OP, I fully appreciate it’s a shocking thing to find out and it has undermined the trust in both relationships.

Think you're wrong. While she is perfectly entitled to see sleep with anyone she wishes, full disclosure is required for him to make an informed to restart relationship, get married, etc.

Imagine if she had slept with his brother or father, is it still none of his business?

He’s reacting as if he’s just found out now - because he’s just found out now.

It’s the two people closest to him sharing an intimate secret for 26 years which has hurt; why are so many posters not understanding this?

Girlintheframe · 30/08/2026 18:36

I think what they did was awful and I don’t for one minute think all the posters who think it is no big deal are being honest. They would be gutted if they found out their spouse and bf had a sexual relationship they knew nothing about!

What I find very suspicious is why tell you now? All these years it’s been kept secret so what’s the motivation to confess now?

Afterthefact · 30/08/2026 18:42

I haven't read the full thread yet so apologies if this has been asked already - does his wife know cos that could be another bomb that hasn't gone off yet - besides that I would feel betrayed particularly because neither of them told you until now and you've been close to them both for so long.

Also, had either of them told you when you & your now wife got back together then you would have had a choice in the matter - would it have made a difference then, I'm guessing it would, hence why they maybe both kept it a secret.

Depending what kind of arsehole you were in the beginning, that may balance the scales a little in weighing up where you go from here but you have to come to terms with it yourself - not an easy situation.

My biggest worry would be, why tell now ? Has his wife and friend being talking about this / is there something going on between them now / is the friend lusting after her now ? How did he know that the OP’s wife hadn’t told the OP at some stage over the years ? Has the friend set-out to cause issues between the OP and his wife ? I’d be interested to know if the friend’s wife knows the history and does she know he has recently told the OP this.

I don’t think it’s simply the case that it happened during a break in their relationship 20 years ago and so what, it’s why tell now ?

Single50something · 30/08/2026 18:43

Where were you when it was going on? Or was it uni time and all in different cities?

Have i missed something. Why would OP be considering a DNA test? Is there a 26 year old child and if so wouldn't a test be up to them?

Lugol · 30/08/2026 18:44

OP some posters on here are being really disingenuous and like to pretend they're so chill that they wouldn't think twice if their best friend had been seeing their husband for three months during a short break in their relationship.

In reality they would never see that friend if they knew and certainly wouldn't have them as Godmother or Maid of Honour so please ignore the bullshit.

A friend is not someone who shags your ex within weeks of you breaking up with them and your wife should have been honest with you when you got back together.

I wouldn't be able to move past the lies and deceit and would drop the pair of them. I would feel like I didn't really know either of them.

You might not have a right to know her sexual past before you but when it's your best friend and he's still in your life then you needed to know that information to make a decision based on the facts.

I mean your wife knew all this and allowed him to be Best Man and Godfather?

Absolutely unforgivable.

Your wife should have told you. Your friend is a piece of shit. 💐

What, that they shagged a few times as teens nearly 30 years ago after I dumped him? When Britney was singing that she'd done it again and we were sighing in relief that there was no millennium bug? After getting over the initial surprise I truly think I'd struggle to give a shit.

The thing that would concern me, assuming this is real (why are we getting so many male posters these days choosing Mumsnet to tell us about their wives' and girlfriends' failings?), is why the friend suddenly decided to throw a grenade almost 30 years later.

It wasn't a short break in their relationship. OP had dumped her for a ridiculous reason. She wouldn't have known they would get back together. And given his reaction hardly surprising his wife didn't want to tell him. If she wanted to stay with op why risk it?

MCF86 · 30/08/2026 18:47

Friend should have been honest as soon as you told him you wanted to win her back, and she should have told you herself as soon as she agreed to get back together, you could then have decided what you wanted to do at the time. Bit weird to wait 20 years and then not take it to the grave.
It's not the relationship, it's the hiding of it. They wouldn't have hidden a 3 month fling if they didn't think it mattered.
My friend is still very good friends with an ex - it's one of the first things they tell any new partners, because those new partners deserve to decide if they're ok with that or not. I understand wife wanted to keep you both in her life but you deserved to make an informed choice about whether you wanted to and they denied you that. I'd be mad too.

So if you'd had a best friend for 30 years and it turned out she'd shagged your husband for 3 months while you were on a break and then you made her Maid of Honour and Godmother to your child and you'd been married 26 years whilst they had had a close friendship all this time you'd think nothing of it?

Yes it should have been full disclosure here given the nature of the other relationship.
