Is it bad to want to be left alone

BwjrIg · 29/08/2026 12:12

Context - just got back from a week away with the kids on my own. Was pretty full on, the kids loved it, am totally done. Husband was working but basically got a week to himself. He is now in a mood because I am not being more affectionate.

If I have to be honest - I just want to be left alone and a bit of time to myself. My oldest didn't go to bed till 10.30 on holiday i.e. my bedtime, youngest got up at 6.30 so I basically been emotionally and practically servicing someone else with no break for a week. Am done.

What I really want is to just have quiet time for myself. My husband instead wants to have sex and constant affection as he feels he's been missing out. I get that, I do but am I unreasonable to feel like all I actually want is not to be needed by anyone and left alone rather than jumping straight back in to basically servicing my husband. I know that sounds bad. I get that am a 40 something woman on HRT but honestly I just want a break.

Tell him you can't pour anything from an empty cup.

He's had a break by himself - you haven't and desperately need a couple of days at least to recharge ALONE.

If he doesn't get it - TOUGH.

WallaceinAnderland · 29/08/2026 17:53

I have mentioned it to him.

I don't think mentioning is the same as explaining. I agree you shouldn't have to explain, it should be obvious to him but as it isn't, it makes sense to clearly express your needs and qualify whether he understands what you are saying or not.

WellThatIsABitMad · 30/08/2026 14:37

He needs to grow up. Tell him straight how you feel.

Esssss · 30/08/2026 14:37

Of course you’re not being in any way unreasonable. I remember when mine were a bit younger, the constant touching and physicality of it all would mean I wouldn’t want my (now ex) anywhere near me by the end of the day. This kind of additional neediness from a grown man is why I’m still single! Just take yourself off somewhere to get some headspace, don’t ask for permission. You can’t fill anyone’s bucket when your own is empty!

FierceFireFairy · 30/08/2026 14:39

Book a hotel room for tonight and tomorrow and don't come back till Tuesday morning.
Tell him you need time on your own because you need to recharge. If he gets pissy then he needs to grow up and service himself!

InBedBy10 · 30/08/2026 15:02

Ask him does he actually want you to enjoy sex or are you just a hole for him to come in?

Seriously! Demanding sex and then sulking when he doesnt get it is the most unattractive thing possible. Dont let him emotionally black mail you into bed.

Sparrowsandbudgies · 30/08/2026 15:12

I honestly think this is one area where men and women are so different. Men seem to recharge by having sex and being all over everyone. Women need time alone to re set and recharge. I’d feel exactly the same as you do.

NeedAir · 30/08/2026 15:36

Nothing worse than being bugged when you want to be left alone.
Im so pleased i live alone.

PyschodelicSoup · 30/08/2026 15:59

If you were a man you wouldn't even need to ask this.

Hope you get the time off you need. Totally not unreasonable.

Mischance · 30/08/2026 16:08

At this moment your needs do not coincide and it is important for it not to become a standoff - "You won't meet my needs, so I won't meet yours."

Both sides feel they are being short-changed.

It is also partly a matter of interpretation - he is interpreting your wish for some peace for a while as being a rejection of him; and you are interpreting his continued desire for sex anyway as evidence of not caring.

I do honestly think that often men find it hard to approach sex in a mature and balanced way - they just feel randy and expect their partner to play ball and cannot see why they would not.

It is such a common situation.

arethereanyleftatall · 30/08/2026 16:08

‘He never needs an hour to himself’ because he’s just had an entire week, and I expect this wasn’t the first time. What a selfish abhorrent prick. I can’t believe anyone has said Yabu. No comments to suggests
you are so I guess bots. His behaviour is unacceptable. If you have any interest in saving this marriage, (I wouldn’t but I’m older and can afford to take less shit) then since he doesn’t get it with your words, you’ll have to show him with actions. He hasn’t left you any choice. Leave him to look after the kids on his own every single time he’s home from work. Then this selfish fool might start to understand.

thestudio · 30/08/2026 18:09

He’s pressuring you into sex. He’s not a good man.

This. The effort expended on the nagging and guilt tripping would be so much better deployed on taking some stuff off OP’s plate over the next few days to give her a chance to recharge and her libido to improve. At least, that’s what partners do when they perceive sex as a shared pleasure and not a chore extracted from a woman in order to placate a man.

Suddenly40yo · 30/08/2026 20:10

My DH used to be like that, no consideration to what I feel/want. Then he was called up for a jury service where the case was about consent and he was shocked to realise that even in a marriage you can’t force anyone into sex unless they give you some verbal/non verbal clue that it’s ok and that it’s actually a criminal offence to try to enforce it onto someone. Now he is much more considerate of my feelings.

Not very helpful for your situation I know.

but I do feel for you. I’m also back from a solo trip with kids (camping in a field in a tent and very basic facilities) while DH was at home/going to work and all I wish for is some peace and quiet after serving kids non-stop. I’m absolutely drained mentally and physically.

Epdrenching · 30/08/2026 20:14

This is how women seriously get the ick.
You have been run ragged with the children all week and he is all me, me, me, when you get back.

Tell him to grow the hell up.
Him sulking is actually disgusting.

You really need time and space from this selfish toddler twat.

FlatCatYellowMat · 29/08/2026 13:00

Is it possible he never needs an hour to himself because he has plenty of hours to himself?

Yeah that was my first thought too.

EmailsaysOOO · 30/08/2026 20:27

You feel how you feel. Of course it's not unreasonable. Tell him you're tired and go up to bed.

lessglittermoremud · 30/08/2026 20:29

My husband knows better then to ask anything of me when I’ve been sole parenting for a week away when he’s been home working.
I get home and he steps in to parent the monsters, chucks washing in, unpacks bags, pours me a wine and knows to leave me alone, you’re much nicer then me I would have bitten his head off 😂
You’re not being unreasonable, your DH although working has been able to have a mini holiday, evenings of pleasing himself, eating what he wants to eat, restful nights sleep and unhurried mornings….

EnglishRose26 · 30/08/2026 20:38

He is being so selfish op, it really is not all about him!!!

Run a bath, lock the door and stay in there for hours and go straight to bed. I would find it intensely unattractive to have anyone foisting themselves on me when I felt burnt out. He should be looking after you.

Loveofeclairs · 30/08/2026 20:57

A week away with small children on your own is not a holiday. If anything, your DH had more of a break as he was free to do as he pleased after work and at the weekend. I’d tell him he owes you and then take a day to yourself. You deserve it.

Sugargliderwombat · 30/08/2026 21:21

He sounds like a dog that won't start jumping up when you get home.

He's had a week off, has he really never heard of being overstimulated ? Touched out ? That maybe YOU have feelings too?

Happyjoe · 30/08/2026 21:30

Wow, your husband is in a mood because you're done in after a week away? Can he not survive without having sex for one week without getting the arsehole?
No, you're not unreasonable, you need some recharge time. Hope fun week away!

Disturbia81 · 30/08/2026 21:35

Obviously you need rest and he should leave you alone. But what has been a 40 something woman who takes hrt got to do with it?

Disturbia81 · 30/08/2026 21:35

Maybe being perimenopausal and a bit knackered/ not feeling sexy?

Kizmet1 · 30/08/2026 22:07

Not unreasonable at all!
I had 8 days in Italy with my mum and my 3 y/o DD to celebrate mum's 70th and it was lovely, but bloody hard work!
When we got back I was absolutely done!
My DP felt like he'd missed out, which was true to an extent, but also he scored 8 days kid free to do as he pleased (he had the time off, but when we booked the trip he didn't fancy coming which was no big deal) whilst I'd had 8 days of parenting our 3 y/o and also managing my mum's over indulgent grandparenting, and then sharing a bed with our 3 y/o so no space even at night! 😄
I was desperate for a private shower and to sit on our bed staring at a wall for a little while and absolutely did not want to cuddle or join in with family time for a bit.
