1st cousin marriage

AIBU to ask your opinion on 1st cousin marriage?.I have read that the government is looking to ban it. I know it is more prevelent ( but declining) in the UK among people of Asian origin. I am not coming from a judgemental or racist angle. I am just interested to know how mum'snetters of all ethnicities feel about marriage between 1st cousin's. I know it used to be more common in the west at one time, apart from keeping money/property in families, people travelled less widely, so there was less choice of marriage partners.I worked with a girl ( White British) who was in a secret relationship with her 1st cousin and they are very reluctant to tell their family, so there seems to be a cultural taboo in 1st cousins being romantically involved.Genetic factors resulting in disabilities (statistically twice as many as in unrelated parents) is sometimes given as a reason for banning cousin marriage, however we have genetic screening now, and disabilities aren't always serious. As so many babies died in infancy before we had vaccines, better health care etc , it was probably difficult to differentiate whether the close relationship between parents was the cause of any disabilities their children . Speaking for myself,I can't imagine wanting to marry any of the cousins I was brought up with as they seem more like brothers to me, but I could understand why someone may be attracted to a 1st cousin who they first met as adults. Or does it give you the instant 'Yuk' ? Also is banning 1st cousin marriage the same as banning 1st cousin sexual relationships and children, or would that become illegal? Maybe there's no need for a legal ban as the tradition will just die out over time

People against banning inbreeding baffle me. Its like humans are desperate to accelerate our own demise... let's us fornicate with our cousins and create a disabled society... let's continue polluting the planet to make things easier for ourselves and to make money... let's buy 10 takeaways a week because we are lazy and then claim DLA for obesity and mental health issues... I could go on. I think we are witnessing the beginning of the end of our race, although no doubt it will take a long time.

No shit.

Wait till you hear about murders occurring despite being illegal.

Still think most people prefer murder to be illegal. Don’t you?

Well obviously
But not reallty the same thing are they ?
My point is though yiu can ban things all you want but some people wiil still do it regardless.

Im not aginst it im just asking in reality how do you stop it?
Because banning wont stop everyone.

Maybe, but selective breeding of livestock has been going on for centuries, of which one aspect involves inbreeding over many generations to fix desirable traits within populations. Darwin wrote about it and carried out experiments of his own with pigeons. He may not gave known about DNA, but he knew about inbreeding, and knew it produced both desirable and undesirable results (from a livestock selection perspective).

Yeah, look what wonders it’s done for pedigree dogs as well…

How do we stop other family members marrying other than to ban it?

Or why don't we legalise marriage between daughters and dads, sons and mothers, siblings marrying ...

It would make for some interesting weddings!

Yomummy77 · 27/08/2026 14:16

Name me one illegal activity that has completely stopped? However its a deterrent and will help to reduce it. We are at a critical point where an ever increasing proportion of our society are inbred. Add to this the impact of social media etc., and we really are creating a bigger problem for ourselves.

You can be the legsl ceremony but you cant ban the religious one.

I do not think anyone is suggesting it will stop all marriages

but that is not a reason to put laws in place as the majority of people do follow the law and future generations may choose to do so than follow cultural tradition

We don’t use that as a reason for something to not be illegal. Incest is illegal, some fathers still abuse their daughters, under age drinking is illegal but some 16 year olds still drink in bars.
Not being able to ban religious ceremonies is not a reason to keep cousin marriage legal.
The fact of it being illegal is what will accelerate it being even more socially unacceptable which will hopefully permeate through the communities that still practice.

x2boys · 27/08/2026 14:19

So a quick google suggests only 40% of muslims in the uk are legally married
With 60% relying on the religious one.

It's not something I'd personally go for and it does strike me as odd.

That said, Fanny Price, the heroine of Jane Austen's "Mansfield Park", married her first cousin to the happiness of most.

King Richard III apparently gave thought to marrying his niece Princess Elizabeth of York (with whom may have had an affair) after his wife died, but the nobles and Parliament were having none of it and put their foot down.

I'd forgive the former but not the latter.

All Austen’s heroines are on the marriage mart far too young by our standards. Fanny and Marianne and Catherine are seventeen; Lydia is sixteen. I love Jane Austen but I don’t think her heroines’ experiences are wholly appropriate models for successful modern marriages.

MuddlingMackem · 27/08/2026 14:23

Yes, it should be banned.

As it generally became a social taboo and was rare it wasn't necessary to make it illegal. However, now that there is a prevalence amongst some cultures in the country, which creates a great deal of unnecessary suffering for the children resulting from these liaisons and also a huge financial burden on the NHS and social services, it is now a national welfare issue so yes, sex between first cousins should be illegal.

this is also in place for future generations. Most second/third generations are less entrenched in cultural traditions

Also this shall apply to new immigrants, some who are Muslim that may follow the cultural norm of marring first cousins

Which is why the law needs to make sex between first cousins illegal rather than just marriage.

Sartre · 27/08/2026 14:25

I grew up in Bradford and in my school we had a specialist unit for blind kids. About 90% of the blind kids were of Pakistani origin. One of the girls had no eyes.

This isn’t me being racist, I’m not fully white either but it is me saying first cousin marriages absolutely should be illegal.

81Claire81 · 27/08/2026 14:26

You expect that type of behaviour from a jack Russell dog, to shag it's cousin, not a human. It's absolutely filthy. This is what separates us as humans, we know that it's wrong. It should be an ick, it should be creepy! The ick is nature's way, there to protect us from all the genetic problems that are a consequence of it
It should be illegal of course, but it shouldn't have to be, because wronguns shouldn't have creepy desires like that in the first place.

No, she’s fifteen in November when the book begins, but by the time of her wedding Mrs Bennet says “She will be married at sixteen!” so she’s had a birthday. I expect there are girls around in the background in JA’s novels who have married earlier. Mrs Bennet, I can imagine!!

Totaldramallama · 27/08/2026 14:29

x2boys · 27/08/2026 13:09

Its not that simple though
You would have to change how the NHS works
Currently treatment is free at the point of contact and its funded through taxes i understand your sentiment im just not sure how prevent it in practice

Also, those children, once they exist have their own rights and have had no say in the circumstances of their conception.
If the parents can't or won't pay for their medical treatment you are punishing the child by denying medical care. A pretty horrific option tbh.

Just like FGM was, apparently ....

The UK is a progressive country, not perfect but its progressive. We have people who have moved here that are from less progressive countries that woman and girls are the ones who tend to suffer the most

Why the fuck are we supporting the right to impose traditions that are not progressive or freeing for girls and woman in particular

ChamonixMountainBum · 27/08/2026 14:43

Sod cultural sensitivities, mock and shame this practice as well as banning it.

Bunnyofhope · 27/08/2026 14:44

Yes it needs to be legally banned, as does sex between first cousins. There is no no biological ick around it. It's a societal ick. Or it should be. If people do want to go ahead then society needs to step in and stop them. Religious marriage would make no difference as sex between cousins married or not would be banned. I suppose an exception would have to be made for couples already legally married. But after that, prosecutions if necessary, like in sibling relationships.
