1st cousin marriage

AIBU to ask your opinion on 1st cousin marriage?.I have read that the government is looking to ban it. I know it is more prevelent ( but declining) in the UK among people of Asian origin. I am not coming from a judgemental or racist angle. I am just interested to know how mum'snetters of all ethnicities feel about marriage between 1st cousin's. I know it used to be more common in the west at one time, apart from keeping money/property in families, people travelled less widely, so there was less choice of marriage partners.I worked with a girl ( White British) who was in a secret relationship with her 1st cousin and they are very reluctant to tell their family, so there seems to be a cultural taboo in 1st cousins being romantically involved.Genetic factors resulting in disabilities (statistically twice as many as in unrelated parents) is sometimes given as a reason for banning cousin marriage, however we have genetic screening now, and disabilities aren't always serious. As so many babies died in infancy before we had vaccines, better health care etc , it was probably difficult to differentiate whether the close relationship between parents was the cause of any disabilities their children . Speaking for myself,I can't imagine wanting to marry any of the cousins I was brought up with as they seem more like brothers to me, but I could understand why someone may be attracted to a 1st cousin who they first met as adults. Or does it give you the instant 'Yuk' ? Also is banning 1st cousin marriage the same as banning 1st cousin sexual relationships and children, or would that become illegal? Maybe there's no need for a legal ban as the tradition will just die out over time

Check your facts first.. I don’t really care about the thread, it’s fine in my family

Good for you I guess. Hopefully the law will change and it will no longer be 'fine' in anyone's family

Because it is.

Yes, but it was also prevalent in her descendants. Did none of them inter-marry?
I know QEII and her husband were both descendants so I presume there would have been others in the meantime.

And even if the inter-marrying didn't cause haemophilia, or make it more common in the Royal Family, it's still not good for the gene pool, is it?

To be fair, at that time, they had no clue how hemophilia was transmitted, only that if you married a female descendant of Victoria, they could be a carrier. They had no idea how male descendants who actually had hemophilia affected anything, as they pretty much all died before reaching adulthood, and therefore inter-marriage wasn’t even an issue for males.

Now we know inter-marriage didn’t cause nor spread hemophilia - it is a gender expressed disorder, meaning females carry it and pass it on the X chromosome to their children, daughters can be carriers, sons can be hemophiliacs. And with science that wasn’t available then, we know with male hemophiliacs, all of their daughters are carriers and all of their sons are disease free.

Of course it is incest. They are related. And if you read this thread you will seen the main concern is intergenerational cousin marriage leads to genetic issues and disabilities. How can you possible argue that it's fine?

It’s not my cup of tea but it’s not incest. No need for the hyperbole.

You can’t change the definition of words to suit yourself.

There isn't just one definition of incest though, is there? You could argue that everyone is related to everyone, but there is a line where we decide to call it incest and we can easily decide that second cousins are OK, but first cousins are not.

I know two women who married their first cousins, it seems very weird to me but they have been together a long time and both seem very happy. In both cases they weren't raised together and hadn't met until they were in their late 20s.

The issue isn’t that first cousins can’t be happy together - of course they can - it’s the risk of congenital disabilities, which are far more prevalent due to genetic similarities.

It is not racist to acknowledge that a cultural custom is dangerous.

See also FGM.

Interpreting racism in such a way that nothing can be questioned or criticised is harmful in itself.

Absolutely… Conflating “culture” with “race”, and then saying that criticism of a culture is “racism” and by implication very wrong, is used to excuse all sorts of appalling behaviours.

Imagine if I said that you couldn’t criticise football hooliganism because that was racist against the English (and any other “race” that has a tendency for it).

Huxon · 26/08/2026 16:36

Shouldn't be banned at all. We allow LGBT marriages. 2 consenting adults. The risk for a one-off one is minimal. We don't tell people who have genetic issues to not reproduce do well. If someone has Huntington's should we ban them from having kids?

Actually, yes, I think those with Huntingdon’s shouldn’t seek to reproduce. “Banning” it would be difficult to enforce without extreme measures though, but thought should be given as to how to do it humanely.

ChimpanzeeThatMonkeyNews · 30/08/2026 09:24

From the things i read on X, it’s apparently absolutely fine and dandy to say racist things about white people.

But if you make a legitimate argument about a different race, then, it can shut down the discussion sharpish.
On this thread, i’ve had posters insinuate that I’m racist for pointing out the obvious.
I also said that it’s like the grooming scandals. People will happily look the other way lest they be called racist - which would be a career killer.
So, it’s deployed every which way to get the discussion shut down.

I think protecting children is more important than name calling and mud slinging.

They had to have medical checks for genetic issues and counselling before they got married. As I said, it was very weird to me but it all ended fine.

They had to or they CHOSE to? I don't think those tests are compulsory in the UK at the moment, are they?

Deadringer · 30/08/2026 10:45

Not uk. Friend told me she had to get them, that was 30 years ago so can't be sure of the details. They needed permission to marry so it might have been a condition of that, or its possible that the priest requested it as part of their pre marriage course. Can't recall.

Sleeping with your cousin is a short step to sleeping with your brother or sister. They probably look alike and it is disgusting. The lack of ick on that is a you problem. Humans have evolved to be disgusted by sleeping with family, it is depressing that so many of this thread are losing this natural protection.

Oxford dictionary definition of incest is below. You can’t make up definitions to suit yourself and expect them to carry any weight.

incest
noun

/ˈɪnsest/

/ˈɪnsest/
[uncountable]

  1. sexual activity between two people who are very closely related in a family, for example, a brother and sister, or a father and daughter

Whoever has the problem with it has the ‘you problem’ surely.

I’m not a fan of it myself but I wouldn’t class that as @SnowFrogJelly problem.

It states, 'for example', that doesn't mean it's limited to parent and sibling. If it were then a half sibling would be Ok! It's already illegal for other relatives not mentioned there to marry e.g. uncle and niece, grandparent and grandchild.

Yes, they’re examples, but the definition of incest has never included cousins in modern times.

Because the dictionary assumes you would know the law.

Sexual Offences Act 1956
Incest
10Incest by a man
(1)It is an offence for a man to have sexual intercourse with a woman whom he knows to be his grand-daughter, daughter, sister or mother.
(2)In the foregoing subsection " sister " includes half-sister, and for the purposes of that subsection any expression importing a relationship between two people shall be taken to apply notwithstanding that the relationship is not traced through lawful wedlock.
11Incest by a woman
(1)It is an offence for a woman of the age of sixteen or over to permit a man whom she knows to be her grandfather, father, brother or son to have sexual intercourse with her by her consent.
(2)In the foregoing subsection " brother" includes half-brother, and for the purposes of that subsection any expression importing a relationship between two people shall be taken to apply notwithstanding that the relationship is not traced through lawful wedlock.

Who are we to ban a relationship between 2 consenting adults. If they want to be together, they will. Might as well let them marry. Doesn't affect my life

81Claire81 · 30/08/2026 13:55

RafaFan · 29/08/2026 22:39

It's interesting though that this "ick factor" is not felt by everyone, as evidenced by the many posts on here from people who are related to or know people in cousin relationships which are not forced or arranged. I mentioned in an earlier post that I know a married couple of my generation (aged 50 ish) who are first cousins. They're just ordinary people living ordinary lives, both intelligent and highly educated. As far as I know they had a pretty regular upbringing, knew each other as kids etc.

Yeah really strange they didn't feel the ick about shagging their cousin.

It might affect the lives of the children they have!
