Overhead neighbours talking about me?

crazykatzz · 24/08/2026 17:10

I have always got on with my neighbour who lives a few a doors down.

I have babysat one of her kids and also looked after her cat when she goes on holiday.

She does have a mean girl vibe about her though and she does have a habit of talking about others.

I asked her to do look after my cats and do my bins whilst I was away with DC and she happily agreed.

Whilst I was loading the car I overheard and another neighbour complaining about me calling on my cats every night.

Convo was like

Neighbour 1 "Did you hear her yelling for her cats again?"

Neighbour who is looking after my cats "I heard it but went back to bed".

Neigbour 2 "I can't believe how her neighbours haven't said anything, it's every effing night, literally by their next door neighbours windows every night, literally, I am absolutely sick of it, wakes me up every effing night".

Neighbour who is looking after my cats "Yeah I know as it's as the back it is really loud."

I popped my head up from the passenger seat and they stopped talking.

For reference Neigbour 2 would regularly
play her music at for hours on end so it was ironic hearing her complain about me. I also helped her with her gardening.

I feel this is very 2 faced and want to step back and wondering why they didn't approach me directly instead of talking about me.?

AIBU to not talk to them when I get back of holiday?

I do suffer from anxiety so not sure if I am over reacting here.
AIBU

Sometimes late evening and multiple times as I have several cats.

I think it was mentioned as I was in between calling the cats in and loading the car.

My friend rattles a treat tin. Gosh you should see those cars run!!!!!

Twolittlebirds75 · 25/08/2026 18:52

Basically you can't choose your neighbours, whether you own or rent.
Just ignore and crack on with your life. They obviously have too much time on their hands and not enough in their own lives so are focusing on you. They are not worth another thought.

Don’t let your cats outside then?

Or if you don’t want to keep them as house cats then just accept that they’ll come and go as they please as cats do.

JT12 · 25/08/2026 19:03

I think we all talk about other people. Even our children, our husbands and our parents/ siblings. I know it’s wrong but it’s also part of life. If you are good friends I would try not to worry too much about it

Dependsoncontext · 25/08/2026 19:03

I wouldn't be ignoring anyone or sending them to Coventry - too much effort. I'd be thinking "are they just gossiping or do they have a legitimate complaint that I need to hear?" Only you know what the situation is so adjust accordingly, If their complaint is legitimate, learn from it, adjust your late night cat shouting and move on. If it isn't then maybe distance yourself but ignoring people and punishing with withdrawal isn't sensible adult behaviour.

Yupstillhere · 25/08/2026 19:17

Well at least now you know you're annoying then. Either carry on or do something else less annoying.

@LAMPS1 Aww thank you so much, your reply has made me feel a lot better.

I never meant any malice or harm by calling the cats, it's just that I worry about them being out all night.
They are my furbabies.

The other neighbour dosent really like me despite me saying hello, trying to talk to her etc, taking in her parcels and helping her with her gardening.

It began way before I got the cats so hearing them talk just made me feel I was being ganged up on.

get them in earlier in the evening. Its very rude and inconsiderate to be shouting late in the evening waking people up.

Is this a joke? Serious question. If I heard that conversation I would think how annoying I had been and stop calling for the cats. Not that the ladies were being mean.

I think I'd be popping round with some flowers and saying you overheard them (which they already know if they saw you) and that you're sorry you've been disturbing them.

This.

PepsiBook · 25/08/2026 19:54

My neighbour also calls her cat in LOUDLY every bloody night. It's irritating.

ViciousCurrentBun · 25/08/2026 20:23

Of course she doesn’t like you because you are waking her up shouting in your garden and waking her up. Go and find them much earlier or just leave them out. Cats can be injured in the day it’s not just at night.

Blondeshavemorefun · 25/08/2026 20:24

How late and how many times

maybe a cat flap is needed

call once if need be

anon666 · 25/08/2026 20:27

To be fair to her, it sounds more like an awkward response than a massive endorsement of Neighbour 2s grumble.

She wasn't stirring the pot.

If i ever overheard things I'm not meant to, I think what would I do in their shoes. Often its just not wanting to make a big point.

MMAS · 25/08/2026 21:06

You forgot to mention the age of your cats. If they are young then they can be trained to come to a whistle. Have done it successfully with all mine albeit they were kittens. You suffer from anxiety yet manage to interact enough with your neighbour to do their gardening. That does not make sense. Are you not part of the Whatsapp group. In any case most cats cannot be managed and will come and go as they please so no need to be loud in asking them to come home if it annoys your neighbours. Cats can be trained despite people saying otherwise.

Vallmo47 · 25/08/2026 21:17

It’s possible to be on a friendly basis with someone and still find their behaviour sometimes irritating, OP. I’m sure it wasn’t nice to hear and I’d probably stew over it a little bit like you have here, but then I’d take the lesson and also learn from it. Clearly me calling the cats in every night is louder than I think and I will try to be more respectful in future, the end.
Does doing someone a favour mean you cannot ever get annoyed by something? Do you never get annoyed by friends? I find it more unusual you haven’t ever spoken about someone’s bad habits. Neighbour 1 was just stating her opinion on something you do that keeps her up at night and neighbour 2 confirmed they can hear it too. So put yourself in their shoes and change that behaviour. If you have an issue with loud music, address it to the person directly rather than say about it here perhaps? Nothing is being resolved at the moment.

pineapplecrushed · 25/08/2026 21:18

but how can you possibly not realise that shouting at night is annoying?

isthisnormal1971 · 25/08/2026 21:23

Yes you are being unsociable shouting for 7 cats every night. I’d moan too. They weren’t even saying anything bad your neighbour who is your friend was entertaining the chat. What do you want her to say?

2children3dogs · 25/08/2026 21:24

I think if you are calling them in at say 8pm, no problem.
However, based on you actually waking your neighbours I'm assuming you are doing this past 10pm, so yes you sre an absolute bloody nuisance and I'm not surprised your neighbours are pissed off.

crazykatzz · 25/08/2026 21:26

I have just got back and the neighbour complaining has loud music blasting tonight.

It's not that late yet.

BOTH of them said you had woken them up shouting for your cats, so if your neighbour is up and playing music at 9.35pm, how late have you been shouting?

As for saying that you would have stopped if someone told you - most people don't need telling not to shout outside at night because it's antisocial.

MsGreying · 25/08/2026 21:51

roseymoira · 24/08/2026 17:14

Are you outside shouting for cats every night? What time? Seems very antisocial

Yeah get them a cat flap.

Thecomedyclub · 25/08/2026 22:14

It depends on the time you are calling your cats…. If before 8pm then ok, after that, bloody annoying. Get a cat flap.

grinandslothit · 25/08/2026 22:16

Multiple people have suggested installing a cat flap that is the solution not calling your cats every night install the cat flap everybody is happy

AmberPeaches · 25/08/2026 22:19

Maybe be a bit more considerate of your neighbours when it comes to calling for your “fur babies” 🤢

There are strong crazy cat lady vibes here. It's not normal to shout for your cats every evening if you live close to other people - is there any way you could stop doing this ? Perhaps this is your wake up call.
