Which burger would you prefer?-Cultural differences?

Option A: Bbq burger on a burger bap with cheese, ketchup, salad, wedges and corn on the cob

Option B: Grilled burger (no bap etc) with plain pasta and salt

We had Dds friend over for lunch after Dd asked her if she wanted to come for burgers and toasted marshmallows. She was quite confused about the burger as has it like option B at home, aside from at McDonald’s.

Which burger do you prefer and can anyone guess which country we’re in?

Salt really brings out the flavour of tomatoes though. I don’t put it on my kids’ but just a little makes a good vine tomato even more delicious.

Burger with pasta is unusual, but if I’m having a burger at a restaurant, I usually leave the bun- bun plus chips is too filling. I don’t rate burgers in general though; hardly ever fancy one.

Steak haché is usually served without a bun in France. Sometimes an egg on top.

I am on diet, but recently I had a burger with a massive amount home made coleslaw (shredded red/white cabbage, red onion, carrot) with burger sauce and a few chips. It was really nice.

In the 70s when Birds Eye Beef Burgers first became popular I remember having them with chips and baked beans. It seemed quite common in those days to not have them in a bun.

I think it was only when MacDonalds took off that Brits started serving them in a bun to mimic the takeaway experience.

Serving burgers with salted pasta though sounds weird and I don't think most people in Portugal have them like that- certainly not what I saw when I visited.

I agree, although we did have burgers in buns at Wimpy (miss wimpy) but at home it was with chips and beans.

Yes true 🤣 but it terms of a burger, surely it has to be a burger bap, rather than burger roll? Doesn’t make sense

My mum had a cutter especially to make crinkle cut chips.
She probably still has it but doesn't do homemade chips anymore.
She also doesn't use the (terrifying to me) deep fat fryer which made the chips delicious.
Oven chips are just not as good 🙁

I do have vague memories of cafes in the 90s with say a meat burger, chips and beans on the menu. I think this was considered quite old fashioned by then and you'd regularly get people asking oi where's the bun?

Yes there was an art to cooking them.

Heat up the lard while you peel and cut chips.

If you have time soak the chips to get some of the starch out or 'dry' with a kitchen towel.

Put the chips in the basket and lower in to the pan, this would result in the fat bubbling up and you hoped it wouldn't spill over.

Now lift out the chips so the lard can heat up again, lower the basket and hope the pan doesn't set on fire.

Cook until they are brown, but keep watching because of the fire risk.

The chips and beans dinner, reminded me my friends mum used to put burgers in the oven with a gravy and onions and have it with mash potato, i had it a few times at her house, and i don't remember it being awful.

there were several restaurants in Portugal last month when we were on holiday that served plain pasta with things I would expect to go with chips, examples being mussels, cod loin and a pork steak. So I guess Portugal. Food was delicious all holiday!

I’d probably go for the one with the proper bap 😂 Although if I’m being honest, I’d probably just end up at McDonald’s anyway!
