Is this stinginess?

A guy I've been chatting to (the exciting phase) found out that my friend works at a restaurant where he has a two year old voucher for. He said if my friend would still honour the voucher, he would take me there for dinner. Is it stingy/cringe of him to even suggest that?

Ughh, cringe. And then Imagine how hard you’d be cringing in the actual restaurant.

Trumpisacunt · 07/08/2026 15:22

Think perhaps he's really interested and trying to play it 'cool' by not being too keen 🤔

He has just been waiting for the right person to come into his life to share his good fortune of winning the voucher.
That's you. You should be honered and slightly emotional (don't let him see that though) that after 2 years you are the first person he has meet that meets the exacting standard of the person that is worthy enough for voucher redemption.
He was willing to not use it if the right person didn't come along.
You are special

Or,
He's got a wicked sense of humour (I would find it funny, tbh. As long as the joke wasn't laboured and he did a proper no voucher date)

Or,
He is a tight wad. That's not good.
Meet him and form an opinion. Really tight people don't hide it. You'll know soon enough.

Brilliant response. Thank you

It’s that he wants the OP to facilitate him using an expired voucher first and foremost before he will take her on a date - he wouldn’t be getting to use this voucher normally, so has seen an “in” to getting some free money by putting the OP in the position of having to swing a favour for him.

Yes. Ugh.

eosmum · 06/08/2026 11:43

Me too, I can't see the issue at all. The restaurant already has the money, the voucher hasn't been used. Why is it stingy to try to use it.

Wouldn't occur to me not to use a voucher. Im in Ireland and all vouchers have to last at least 5 years, so this wouldn't even arise as an issue.

Gosh! that reminds me I think I have some 15p Luncheon Vouchers somewhere.

...now where did I put them?

1p woolies voucher somewhere, do you think he'd like that?

Livpool · 06/08/2026 11:37

Ugh - stinginess is so unattractive. He will be stingy in ways other than money

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 06/08/2026 11:08

That’s awful! He’s not offering to “take you out” anywhere, he’s just trying to get the use out of an expired voucher and use the OP to get a freebie/ bargain.

Just totally cringe and would put me off too.

ChocolateApples · 06/08/2026 11:05

I don't think it's unreasonable. It often takes a while to get round to using these things, but it's just sensible financial behaviour. Even if unromantic. I don't think two years is particularly long. Places never used to have expiry on vouchers. I understand they don't want the accounting liability mounting up, but it's not great.

Give it a go, you’ll know within a couple of dates whether he needs to be put back or not. But I wouldn’t rule him out when this could have just been his daft way of asking you without putting himself out there too much

It turns out he's actually really nice and funny. I havent heard about the voucher since but it majorly gave me the ick at the time.
Thanks for your words :)

This is a great and balanced point. No we haven't yet and to be honest, if that was a joke I'd find him extremely hilarious. He went into a bit of detail about how he won the voucher though. Oh god it could be so bad, or so great and hilarious. 😂😂

Have you been on a date yet? Maybe it was just his cheesy way of asking you to move from just chatting to a real date. Could just have been his in, there probably is no voucher

Yeah, the ‘talking’ would stop there and then for me if a man said that.

If you genuinely think he might have been joking you need to establish that pronto before you go any further.

Yes. And, he's already showing you that he's a user. And disorganised because he couldn't manage to use a voucher in time within the two years it was valid for.

Thanks all. I'm starting to wonder if it's a wind up. He is funny and I really hope it is a joke, otherwise I'll just go be sick now. Urgh I couldn't bare it if he was that tight.

Oh no OP, absolutely awful!

Katflapkit · 02/08/2026 20:49

Are you dating Tam Mullen from Still Game?

mondaytosunday · 02/08/2026 20:39

Cringe. He's acting like he’s treating you when it’s nothing of the sort! Cheap cheap cheap.

Cockerpoomom · 02/08/2026 20:39

Well you already know what life will look like once the honeymoon period has worn off if he's already tight now.
Youl be back on here complaining that he's took you out for a meal, drunk 5 pints, ordered the most expensive meal on the menu then "forgot his wallet"

Every.. Single... Time!
Bin Him off now.
