Is husband being a prick?!

my Husband has an issue with me cooking “greasy” foods in the house and it’s getting to the point where I want to leave. I know that sounds dramatic but I was cooking chicken Parmesan tonight for dinner and he literally went ballistic when he got home, it’s my favourite food and haven’t had it in years and the minute he saw me shallow frying the chicken he went nuts ranting how the whole house smells like grease and how he won’t feel clean for days! Im so fed up. It’s okay for him to bring home stinking fish and chips and has no problem with garlic or onions or whatever else! Please give me some perspective here

People, anyone, cooking in my house without opening the window and using chef candles for stinky food do give me the rage, but I wouldn't question what they're cooking as long as they eat it, and clean up - and not feed the kids crap or junk food

This is going to seem a stupid question but is this an electric device thing? (Open plan house and cooking smells drive me potty, the extractor fan does a good job but there's often a lingering odour.)

Yes. It runs air through a HEPA filter and a carbon filter and it absorbs odors and particulates.

Skybluepinky · 27/11/2025 15:37

In reality frying does makes your house smell, but it depends if you can put up with the smell, lots can’t stand it.

Do you have an extractor hood... If not, why not.

Yes! Two extractor fans!

Damn.

Yes, he's being an asshole. Does he have sensory issues?

Either get an air purifier, it really helps with cooking smells or get rid of the husband.

Edited

This is tricky. I hate greasy foods being cooked too. I have weird sensory issues with food. Does he?

I think 'weird sensory issues' are something people have to manage for themselves, rather than expecting everyone else in the household to restrict their cooking and eating to accommodate them.

Guys cant get away with saying "i've got sensory issues".

PsychoHotSauce · 27/11/2025 11:31

Have people missed that he seemingly has no problem standing in the greasy chippie waiting for his greasy fish and chips and doesn't mind those smells? Rather selective sensory issues Hmm

rainbowstardrops · 27/11/2025 11:17

I don’t like the smell of oil cooking either. H works late and comes in to cook at gone 10pm. He ‘forgets’ to put the extractor fan on (not that it makes much difference anyway) and I’ve asked him countless times to close the doors to the other rooms so that the smell doesn’t permeate the whole house but he ‘forgets’ to do that too and claims not to be able to smell it. It’s vile.

BauhausOfEliott · 27/11/2025 11:12

Yes, he's a prick.

Although I think the same about the legions of Mumsnetters who get prissy about smells. Mumsnet seems to be full of people who can't cope with a whiff of a stranger's fabric conditioner without feeling sick or getting an asthma attack and 'literally gag' if their colleague eats a packet of cheese and onion crisps.

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 27/11/2025 09:17

What sort of oil are you using? The mell of sunflower makes me want to throw up, olive oil I’m ok with.

IndigoIsMyFavouriteColour · 26/11/2025 18:31

Sounds like a massive overreaction. Opening windows and/or back door when cooking should mitigate any smells getting into the rest of the house

Lamentingalways · 26/11/2025 18:28

Oh I feel you. OH has a problem when anyone steams up the windows when cooking. However, he seems to forget this the two times a year that he cooks and the windows are steamed up. You will
grow to hate him for this. If he’s reasonable about EVERYTHING else could a compromise be made? Opening the door / windows etc. how awful to be made to feel like this in your own home. I know people are stating that they don’t like greasy foods being cooked and understand OP’s husband etc, I get it but it’s a kitchen, for cooking. Also, reacting angrily isn’t normal which some of you seem to be forgetting.

Luckyingame · 26/11/2025 18:28

Yes. Prick with issues. Soz. 😐

SuffolkUnicorn · 26/11/2025 18:25

I’m the same however I’m autistic and have spd smells really affect me

Stillpoor · 26/11/2025 18:20

Tricky because i dont like the smell either.
I fryed an egg today and had me windows open i rarely cook anyways.
My ex use to fry alot of greesey foods late at night and i hated it tbh.
I told him to do it of a day time as i can get the smell out throughout the day.
Final button pushed me when he started to fry fish at 8pm/10pm at night yuk.
I dindt go mad at him but i couldent deal with it.

ShinyWorthKeeping · 26/11/2025 18:18

I'm allergic to mushrooms, even the smell makes me feel queasy just because I know how ill they make me. They're DPs favourite food, he just closes the door over when he makes them.
If he forgets to close the door there's no screaming or ranting from me though and I certainly can't/wouldnt ban him from cooking them!

Badslipperluck · 26/11/2025 18:17

Can you close the kitchen door and open a window so the smell doesn't permeate the rest of the house? Failing that wait until summer when you can open all windows and doors

localbutterfly · 26/11/2025 18:11

If one or both of you have severe sensory issues, then you both have to agree on what can be cooked in the house and when, and stick to it. No one should be ranting and raving as long as there's a plan in place and everyone follows it.

NotbloodyGivingupYet · 26/11/2025 18:10

Yes he is. If he has sensory issues, then a compromise is needed. But expecting you to never pan fry is ridiculous and controlling.
Fwiw there's a ready meal my DH loves. I can't stand the smell of it. So he heats it, eats it and washes out the container. He never brings it into the living room. I stay out of the way until that's all done (about once a fortnight).
I don't go on a mega rant and ban it from the house.

Lifelover16 · 26/11/2025 18:09

Get him to do the meal planning, shopping and cooking.

DwarfBeans · 26/11/2025 18:08

He’s Mr Pricky McPrick Face. It’s not what he’s saying, it’s how he’s choosing to say it and his double standards.

SaySomethingMan · 26/11/2025 18:07

Do you not ventilate the house properly when you cook. I have to remind DH to do that when he cooks sometimes.
