Could you get another job OP?

Flumpflimpo · 22/07/2025 17:34

I hate doing my job but at the same time i feel lucky to have my job.

Ive met a lot of people lately who are struggling to find any job

take10yearsofmylife · 22/07/2025 17:33

I am 50, I am just grateful if I get to keep my job for another 10 years so that I can pay my bills and save for retirement!

I like my job most days when it's not stressful.

Barney16 · 22/07/2025 17:33

I thought I hated work until I got made redundant and had planned a whole year off work. The novelty wore off after about three weeks. Blessed relief to go back to work.

Last time OP was clear she didn't want any advice, just wanted to whine, so please don't waste your time offering suggestions.

Oh, but does it matter that the OP has posted the same complaint before?

It's an important topic and many people feel the same - rather like women who feel overwhelmed/resentful/pissed off with meal planning, laundry, lunch boxes, commute, etc.

Sometimes you just have to let rip, more than once!

Wolfpinkola · 22/07/2025 17:27

Screw work, be an entrepreneur you’ll never ‘work’ another day

But why do you think that people want advice. They don't.

A lot of people come on here just to complain about their lives. That is okay too.

Thought I'd seen it before.

Look into FIRE - Financial Independence Retire Early.

It's more about radically reducing your costs than increasing your income, but it can make a massive difference - so far I've taken one 2 year and one 4 year "sabbatical" from work to travel, currently early 40s.

But I'm an independent consultant so it doesn't affect my ability to get work after the breaks - you do need to think through what your plans are, but the rat race isn't the only option.

You're plenty young enough to retrain into something else that you prefer and that pays better.

This.

You don't have to work. There are other options. But your life will have to reflect that. You might have to move to a commune. That's a serious suggestion.

Kleya25 · 22/07/2025 17:23

I don't mind working as such but I really hate working in the department I'm in as it's so badly run and the manager is vain, arrogant and incompetent. The overall organisation needs an oversized audit rocket up its backside. And yes I'm trying to get something else but the job market, our location and my age are not helping.

Zanatdy · 22/07/2025 17:23

Change jobs, do something that you won’t hate

MsJen · 22/07/2025 17:19

I have to work. There’s no getting away from that but I can choose to enjoy the job I’ve got, or go get another job. I know so many people who hate their jobs, but I couldn’t live like that for 40+ years. My current job , others might hate, but I make the most of it. I do the mundane bits and then spend the majority of my time on people related tasks. I love it. It’s a level of acceptance, to an extent and I’ve been able to find the joy in it.

coxesorangepippin · 22/07/2025 17:18

I'm 43 and already desperate to retire

Flumpflimpo · 22/07/2025 17:18

I dont hate my workplace.

I hate my critical, negative managers.

I just try to remind myself that i am not stuck in any workplace forever. And in a year from now i wont have to see any of these people again.

themoirarosee · 22/07/2025 17:12

Me too!

I’m in early years. Long long hours for next to nothing pay wise. Toxic workplace with micromanagement and bitching galore.

I keep meaning to leave but can’t find hours anywhere else to suit my single parent responsibilities.

I agree with this. I am over state pension age and don't need to work but I want to. I enjoy the work and like the people that I work with. However I have changed carers several times and with with one employer worked on a series of short term projects. This has meant that I have never got bored.

Same here, a couple of jobs that I've had have been to implement a new system, get it up and running, processes written, then hand it over to the team and move on. It's very satisfying and keeps your skills up to date, you can't get bored or jaded.

That being said, after a couple of intense jobs like that and I was ready to settle down for a bit with a more steady job which I have made my own. Don't know what I'll be doing for the last part of my working life yet, but I think I've got plenty of scope to try something new again.

I had to stop work at 44 due to ill health, I am bored rigid

Same here. I am 52 and gave up work Nov last year due to health issues and caring for my elderly mum. I am so bored. I wish I could WFH, at least that would keep the brain cells ticking along.

Blame feminism

Yes, because women never lift a finger outside their paid workplace and have been famously idle throughout recorded history...

...She says sarcastically.

ThatCyanCat · 22/07/2025 17:02

Some people do. But humans are designed to be do-ers and need to do something even if it's not paid employment. And financial independence lets you retain a lot of choice and freedom.

Stupid responses from @SeaShellsSanctuary1 & @FranzXaverSuss

I have to work I just hate it

@SeaShellsSanctuary1's and @FranzXaverSuss 's responses are no more "stupid" than your original post. What responses did you expect? Did you expect sympathy? The overwhelming majority of people have to work to pay their bills and I doubt that they all like, let alone love, their jobs. If you're doing hard manual labour for NMW then I have some sympathy, but if you hate the work you're doing, find a different/better job. Your future is in your hands - what do you expect anyone else to do about it? Even if what you were hoping for with this thread was just sympathy - and even if you got that sympathy - how does it change your situation? Would you like or even love your job because others on here posted soothing platitudes?
Grasp the nettle and make a change OP - only you can do it.

Flumpflimpo · 22/07/2025 17:00

What i hate most about work is as much as i dont like my current job,
If i leave, the next one could be even worse.

I wish there was a way to know what a job is going to be like before you commit to it.

AxolotlEars · 22/07/2025 17:00

Me too. Lottery?

tsmainsqueeze · 22/07/2025 16:58

PruthePrune · 22/07/2025 15:14

So do I. I'm 57 now so theoretically have another 10 years to go and can't bloody wait. I do feel as if I'm wishing my life away though.

This is exactly me .
I really like my job and colleagues but i have had enough now , one regret in life not doing a proper pension when younger !!
I have so many things i'd rather be doing than work.

SecretNameforMN · 22/07/2025 16:55

is it your present job or just the thought of working every day ad infinitum?
