Is Pride exempt from public indecency rules?

DD (aged 14) went into London today with a friend she is staying with. I can only assume friend’s parents didn’t realise it was pride weekend and we don’t live anywhere near London so had no idea.

Aside from the fact that it was a complete ballache getting back out because tube stations were closed, DD said she was shocked at some of the things she saw in terms of arses on display with men just wearing “thongs”.

How is it OK to have such sexualised stuff going on in view of young kids?

But why not try to get attention for something of note? So many young people seem to chase attention by dying their hair blue, demanding you call them they/them/zir or some other such shite and calling you a bigot for telling them to grow up. Have they no discernible actual talents that we should give them attention for?

Having blue hair and identifying as nonbinary is hardly mutually exclusive with talents. My green-haired nonbinary niece just graduated from Cambridge with a first.
your self expression is impirtant and people are allowed to want to show it in public,

Experiences vary. Some of us have had adult children go no contact when we have talked about protecting women's rights or argued against children being exposed to harmful drugs and mutilating surgery. Of course anybody is free to present themselves how they wish but the bodily dissociation, denial of reality and personal rejection is often heartbreaking for families. I think people are often angry about gender ideology rather than genuinely contemptuous of individuals.

'So many young people'.

How many?

I'm 58, have 3 young adult kids, and only know 3 people who are transgender/gender non-conforming. One is a pupil from my son's primary school who has transitioned female to male at the age of 20, the other is a friend's kid who again has transitioned female to male a number of years ago, and the other is a non-binary student who my son shares a house with. None of them 'demand' anything. They're all people who've gone through a lot and they don't deserve to be sneered at by people like you.

As for young people dying their hair - young people have always experimented with their appearance. I did. I suspect you did. You've now 'transitioned' into an adult who has contempt for young people who do what young people have always done.

What’s wrong with wanting some attention? We have such a repressed attitude to things in this country where we see ‘attention seeking’ like it’s a moral failure, but it isn’t.

My kids are with me and my wife at many prides, kink is involved, it's never a problem. Just like topic of sex is never a problem in our house, neither is the topic of kink sex. If they are old enough to ask, they are old enough to get an answer, as detailed as they are willing to keep asking.

In case anyone is under any illusions about the views of some trans identifying men who attend Pride. This user has already advocated for children learning about the ‘fun’ to be had with whips and chains.

While utterly horrifying, it is useful to have it written down. In the future when we have legions of damaged kids, at least we will know what went wrong. Sadly Social Services have a big blind spot in this area so can’t be relied upon to intervene.

Who said this?! I mean, obviously a man who thinks he's a lesbian, but someone on MN?

Once again

We aren't all straight

And supporting LGBT+ isn't "wanting a pat on the back"

It's just being supportive and not a hate filled dick

Quite right. Anyone supporting LGBTQ only getting a 'pat on the back is going to be mightily disappointed.

selkie

got that now, thank you

RufustheFactualReindeer · 06/07/2025 12:28

Plus to be fair ro my short term memory i am also reading a thread on fetish at pride

got the two confused 😳

RufustheFactualReindeer · 06/07/2025 12:27

UsingAMansNameInAWomensWorld · 06/07/2025 10:05

Because the thread was actually about thongs and got turned into being about full fetish gear?

Fair point

i obviously didn’t remember reading that bit…oops

Do I care about flamboyant gay men in a thong or tight shorts? No.

Not one person on this thread has objected to anyone wearing tight shorts. At all. A thong, however, is an item of underwear (the clue is in the name) that exposes the entirety of someone's lower half except for their genitals. It's totally reasonable to object to someone wearing one as outerwear in public. More to the point, objecting to this is not homophobic for two reasons:

  1. No one is saying that only gay people should be banned from wearing thongs in public. Straight people should also put their arse cheeks away in the middle of Oxford Street.

  2. Homosexuality is defined as exclusive same-sex attraction. Nothing to do with thongs. So you cannot claim that people- some of whom are actual gay people- objecting to public thong-wearing is homophobic. Prudish, maybe, but homophobic, absolutely not.

I probably worded that wrong as I don't think objecting to seeing ANYONE in a thong is wrong, I've seen girls at festivals ina thong and no bra with mesh covering over it (regularly) and I haven't seen massive threads damning those festivals as fetishistic and inappropriate.

There is lots of homophobia on this thread. I also think the larger pride events have been coopted by others who are not gay and lesbian and are now not accessible by those that want to celebrate with their families, but that isn't all and it isn't the fault of those gay men and lesbians who still go, it doesn't make them complicit or in anyway at fault.

Bigfatsunandclouds · 06/07/2025 12:10

BundleBoogie · 06/07/2025 09:23

That’s nice. So take it not one of the Pride events that has banned lesbians that don’t include men who identify as lesbians in their dating pool? Several of them have been vocal in their exclusion of such lesbians.

Absolutely not! I'm gender critical myself and tbh, there was only one trans flag there. I went with my gay and lesbian pals, who are also gender critical, it was a lovely day! I wouldn't go to one that excluded a lesbian pride march

BundleBoogie · 06/07/2025 11:34

If anyone is in any doubt about the exclusion of lesbians from Pride events I suggest you read this thread. https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/womens_rights/5355905-lesbian-pride-march-saturday-5th-july-women-only-london

The lesbian group was told they weren’t welcome at Pride because they don’t recognise men as lesbians so they organised their own event well out of the way from Pride. Some very unpleasant threats in this thread from trans identifying men to turn up in person to intimidate and shut down the lesbian event.

Maybe they found it a bit big city exciting, besides there's always the lego store or the mnm store to visit if pride offends

Young girls should go to toy stores if they don’t want to see grown men parading their genitals in public? But who would see the men’s junk if they aren’t there?

I walked back from Chinatown through Soho last night, there was a guy giving a full on blowjob in Soho square, it was fucking rank and I don’t understand why it’s overlooked by the police in the way that it is.

I agree and that is very different from what the OP is objecting to. All public sex should be illegal whoever the people are.

BundleBoogie · 06/07/2025 10:57

selkieselkie · 06/07/2025 10:25

Did you read the OP? The only thing mentioned (aside from transport difficulties) was men wearing thongs. The OP referred to sexualised behaviour but has yet to clarify what she meant by this despite me asking. I assume there was more to it than just thong wearing but, if there was, she's staying quiet. It's other posters who have inferred she was talking about fetish.

Other posters have reported on other instances of indecent and fetishistic behaviour that have happened at various Pride events as well as the sex offenders closely associated with some Pride organisations.

And the fact that lesbians who don’t include ‘lesbians’ with penises in their dating pool have been explicitly excluded from many Pride events.

And that many gay people feel that Pride is no longer for or about them.

a thong is an item of clothing worn on full show by many young women daily (have a look around your local secondary, or on a playground- see through leggings don’t count as covering)

its not on full show under leggings, there is a massive difference between someone walking round the shopping centre with no covering on their bottom half and leggings that are very stretched/cheap and you can see the shape of the underwear

changing the subject i have no idea why a thread about fetish at pride has turned into a thread about thongs

ds1 and dd go to pride every year and have a great time, even dd was a bit 😳
at the nappy wearers and ‘pups’

Generally pretty ugly if they are mens and hairy though. Bleugh.

Arses on anyone aren't attractive.

Still doesn't mean they need to cover up or are sexual

Yes - see above - I have admitted it was my fault. But thank you for questioning my parenting - much appreciated.

Honestly! You can’t win on Mumsnet, another 2/3 years and your child could be literally leaving home. If you had posted for advice about a 14 year old going into town (which essentially if you’re living very near London this is the equivalent of) you would be roasted for helicopter parenting. Fuck anyone that says they question your parenting anyway, pious arse!

ScreamingBeans · 06/07/2025 09:40

Yes.

Ever since fetishists took over Pride and made it an unsafe space for lesbians, the normal rules of public decency don't apply.
