Mumsnet during the beginning of the Pandemic - please tell me your stories of the maddest comments you saw

Inspired by chat on another thread - one woman was told not to pop to the shop for milk but to put butter in her coffee instead 😄

I wasn't on mumsnet then but would love to know the maddest comments you saw?

I myself went mad during the pandemic 🙈 and refused to leave the house and judged anybody that did, I'll admit 😬😄 - I wish I'd been calmer

Please share 🥰

Edit - I know how awful the pandemic was for those who lost loved ones, and how serious those losses are - this is just about the unnecessary hysteria and comments stemming from that, not to poke fun at those who lost someone or became ill. 💕

When Dominic Cummings had driven to wherever it was there was a long thread about it and one poster went ballistic and was predicting rivers of blood running through the streets as the population were going to riot and attack MPs homes.

Bit OTT.

I’ve been reading a book about the First World War and there are various points where girls / women gave white feathers to schoolboys to shame them for not signing up. Reading this, my thought was “Who on earth would do that” but of course I know - it’s the same people who wanged on about how incredibly dangerous it would be to open schools and gave people shit for not clapping on their doorstep.

That's so sad, it's no way to live, is it?

She has a good quality of life prior, had friends, went to see live music etc and saw her nephews regularly. She was hysterically funny and mischievous.
My gran is absolutely mystified by it all.
I can't believe the difference in her. It's very sad indeed.

I remember a lot of mentalists smugly asserting that they had been stocking up on loo roll and tinned goods for years in preparation for the apocalypse, and acting like those of us who hadn’t were actually the lunatics.

My mum was a food hoarder so was fine...however in 2023 when hospitalised for 6 months my stepdad threw away 16 bin bags of off food she had hoarded

The company I worked for bought auto gel dispensers and gel for over 450 branches. Except the first lot of gel was too runny and dripped through constantly creating a slip hazard. So we bought a shed load more. In vast quantities the gel is a fire hazard on disposal so it cost £000s to have the runny gel disposed of. We couldn't even give it away to charities as everyone had panic purchased way too much. I think there are still a few hundred 5 litre containers in the warehouse.

I volunteer in a charity shop. Our staff loo is still packed with boxes of sanitiser gel, masks and gloves.

I'm sure there was a poster who wiped her shopping down with bleach

My MIL did that...

In the anti-lockdown circles I moved in, there was a seamstress who refused, on principle, to make masks for children, and felt annoyed at the sheer number of requests for them.

And yes, with the test kits, all that plastic waste, moments after we were being preached at to use less plastic, to say nothing of the Perspex screens.

I remember this. The poster also said that she worried that it would demonstrate to predators houses where children were not properly safe-guarded or something. Because they'd been allowed to paint a picture of a rainbow which is associated with perverts I guess?

Edit - here it is: https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/3858392-Please-dont-put-a-rainbow-in-your-window?postsby=RuffleCrow&page=2

Thanks for that. I forgot the poster who warned us that putting a rainbow in window would lead to being targeted by paedos within weeks.🤣🤣🤣

TheNightingalesStarling · 06/05/2025 13:54

We got a good deal on post bags recently.

Discovered why today... they were originally for home Covid tests. Makes you wonder how many just ended up in landfill without ever being distributed, let alone the ones that are sitting unused in cupboards etc.

No, that wasn't it. Quite the opposite.

A poster started a thread saying rainbow pictures in windows triggered her because she associated it with the trans community.🤯

@thetorturedpoetsdepartmentssecretary I hope she goes from strength to strength.

We ignored a lot of the rules . I even had a birthday party at home. I said at the time if you think those politicians aren't partying you're wrong. Obviously no one vulnerable came. Plus it was their choice.

LushLemonTart · 06/05/2025 06:20

@thetorturedpoetsdepartmentssecretary that's so sad. Is she doing anything else? Does she socialise?

She's working now, not a very satisfying job though. It took her a long time to be able to socialise again though. I'm just so angry, as I feel covid/the government cost her a degree. Maybe she would have dropped out anyway though, we'll never know.

RosesAndHellebores · 06/05/2025 08:29

The thing that surprised me was the emphasis on washing hands and how everyone started washing their hands. Evidently, most people didn't wash their hands very much.

I always wash my hands when coming in, would after unpacking the shopping, before meals, etc. I thought that was normal.

I went on a date during lock down and kissed him, thoroughly! I then went home and washed my mouth out with mouthwash! It was all a bit surreal. I kind of believed it all. I used to wash my hands thoroughly after opening my mail or putting my groceries away. I never clapped for the NHS though or downloaded the app. I didn't really want to know if I'd been near someone who'd been diagnosed with covid. I mainly stayed at home alone anyway. My daughter dropped out of uni because she couldn't cope with not seeing anyone. She hasn't gone back. She was severely depressed.

That reminds me of the BBC article about sex during Covid. No kissing, wear masks, and have him take you from behind!

Yellowdaffodilss · 05/05/2025 23:03

I remember seeing a video on tik tok of army vans just driving and it being shared everywhere saying that they were coming in for lockdown ( when lockdown was a rumour ). Also had someone tell me - again before lockdown and when it was still a rumour - that there would be army all over the street and they would shoot anyone who came out of their house.

There was someone who believed the whole of Kent had been shutdown and all of the roads in and out were closed. It was a complete fabrication. It was also posted on the legal website roll on Friday. I lived there and there was nothing of the sort so in a way it was weirdly entertaining as they kept posting live street closures but obviously not being from the area, the detail skewed and it was always after a few drinks. As it happens they were outed as someone living a life of luxury in Edinburgh, getting food and nice wine delivered and having a right go at everyone on the front line NHS. Couldn’t make it up. Can’t believe that’s been five years, total nonsense and embarrassing on their part.

Not so much mad but the stuff that really made my blood boil were the smug posts from people who were either furloughed or didn't have to work wanging on about how wonderful their lives were, skipping through empty forests, growing marrows with their children and face-painting all day and how they had woken up to what a great way this was to live. And how they'd suddenly had this epiphany about how wonderful this life was and would never have to worry about trivial things like making a living or seeing other people.

While I was stuck in a one bedroom flat working (no exaggeration) from 5am to 8.30pm every night just to keep the lights on while also trying to home school my kid in the room next door and keep her off YouTube. And I was one of the relatively lucky ones who a) kept my job and b) didn't have to work in a COVID ward or a germ-infested supermarket.

And the really nauseating thing is how many people have taken this awful fantasy and strung it out for the next five years, still going on to everyone who will listen about how much they enjoy their simple lives without people.

I will murder anyone on sight who has the nerve to tell me they "loved lockdown".

This. I was working in a supermarket, and it was an absolute nightmare. My mental health took a nosedive. (My favourite was the woman shouting at me about not knowing what other people were going through when I was feeling suicidal. Yeah, maybe she should have taken her own advice.🖕🏻All I did was ask her very politely to pull up her mask while talking to me.) Got sacked in March 2021, (not related to the stupid woman,) went on UC, found another job after three and a half months. Felt much better because although it was retail, it was also mostly warehouse work. I finally got COVID in 2022 and felt awful.

RE people saying they think they had COVID in 2019. Not unreasonable, they did a study about it, using chest x-rays they'd taken from people in 2019 and ones from people with confirmed cases of COVID, and found them to be very similar. I saw people in 2019 who were complaining about feeling very poorly, we just didn't know it was COVID

Yes. I genuinely feared for the safety of my cats, because people had gone so mad, and might take matters into their own hands. The government thinks we’ve forgotten that they were “considering” killing all pet cats. People (including me) were saying “they’ll have to kill me first”.

I honestly think that there would have been people who would be out "hunting" cats if cats spreading Covid was thing.

Denmark culled 17 million mink due to Covid fears.

ETA - Hong Kong also ordered the killing of pet hamsters due to Covid too.

Not sure if it’s been mentioned (read up to p20 so far!) but I remember a big fuss being made about cats, should you stroke cats, should you let your cats out, what if you stroke a cat outside and you catch covid from the last person who stroked it??!
