DH constantly complaining about adult DDs TikTok

DD is 24, ahead lives in New Zealand with her boyfriend of over a year. Over the last few years DD has become an active user/poster on TikTok. Initially it started when she was on her gap year and she would just post little clips edited together, or her playing games/dancing with the people they were with. All innocent. She has continued and now the stuff she posts is basically one of 4 things, her boyfriend playing guitar while she sings, she/her friends/her boyfriend doing little trending dances, little clips from dates/nights out with friends etc edited together or her doing some of her sports. The only reason I ever go on the app is to see what she's posted, it's nice seeing her happy. DH also has the app and only uses it to see DDs posts but he complains constantly that it's pathetic, pointless, embarrassing etc. I've suggested if he doesn't like it, he delete the app but no no he continues to watch everyone and complain about it. She doesn't have lots of followers or anything she does it as she enjoys it and DH tells her every time we talk how much he hates it, she just ignores him saying he hates it or says something like "well I like it".

AIBU to think that there is nothing wrong with what she's doing and his constant complaints are uncalled for?

If I were her I would block him. What a joyless twat.

mintgreensoftlilac · 24/01/2025 15:52

YANBU why does he care so much? Maybe you should be enquiring as to why a grown man has TikTok surely that is more of an embarrassment 😅

It's mind boggling, he spends at least 20 minutes after every post complaining about it but doesn't seem to get that he used his own free will to watch it and that not watching it is a totally valid option!

YANBU. He sounds like a snobby grump. She is happy and having fun with it. I bet her tik toks are great too. Maybe he's embarrassed for himself because he's no fun!

Onlyonekenobe · 24/01/2025 15:57

Does she have a job and is she being productive with her life, basically is this just an add-on to an otherwise healthy and responsible life? Or is this her life?

PartyAtVosta · 24/01/2025 15:57

Your DH is a fun sponge. Much like my mum was when she was exactly the age I am now

DD is about to start the 2nd year of her masters degree.

Well, then he should probably just keep his negativity to himself. If he's got something to say, he should say it to her directly - maybe he's anti-SM, anti-exhibitionism, find it attention-seeking, finds it a wast of a life. Whatever his opinion is, I'd be telling him to spit it out once and for all and then stop moaning. It's pointless going on and on.

JustSawJohnny · 24/01/2025 16:13

I have to admit that I find the vast majority of TikToks utterly mind numbing and despair a bit at what sometimes appears to be a bit of a 'look-at-me' generation who never seem to experience anything fully because they're too busy recording it for 'the gram'.

That said, it sounds like your DD isn't after followers or attention, but just posting clips as a way of keeping family & friends in the know of what she's up to.

It sounds like your DH is embarrassed by her.

I agree that the best thing DD could do is block him from seeing her posts.

PiastriThePastry · 24/01/2025 16:17

He sounds absolutely awful, what a miserable prick. It may not be his thing but, as you say yourself, he doesn’t need to watch it! Why have such a negative, horrible reaction to seeing his daughter happy in life, particularly as she lives so very far away? I don’t think I’d be tolerating him haranguing her anymore, I’d hate for her to be put off from speaking with you because he’s a knobhead.

Endofyear · 24/01/2025 16:20

He sounds awful. If he doesn't like it, he doesn't have to watch it! I'd tell him to stop bloody moaning about it and sod off 🙄

LucyLou0527 · 24/01/2025 16:44

To me it sounds like he is jealous maybe?

ThatEllie · 24/01/2025 18:05

On one hand I’d be tempted to ask her to block him because he clearly has an unhealthy fixation with it and it’s impacting your home life having to listen to him. On the other hand I wouldn’t want to admit to my daughter that her father was such an utter arsehole that he was constantly watching her social media and then slagging her off and tearing her down for twenty minutes afterwards.

Have you tried losing it with him and pointing out that he’s being a shit father and needs to grow up?

Pigeonqueen · 24/01/2025 18:09

I agree. How is his life generally? He sounds like he is jealous of other people enjoying themselves.

hagchic · 24/01/2025 18:13

Does he think that his disapproval means she should immediately do what he wants?

Does he think that 'as her father' he should have a say over her activities and life?

Is he actually a controlling misogynist?

This was my thought! Sad really if it is the reason...

SandrenaIsMyBloodType · 24/01/2025 18:29

I think it shows self-possession and strength of character that, when her father complains to her about it, she just says "well I like it". That's the energy young women need for this world.

I think it would be worth cutting him off when he starts complaining. "I am very clear about your feelings on the matter. I don't need to hear about them again. You know my view is that you should just stop watching but, if you won't do that, then you can just KEEP IT IN YOUR HEAD!"

Life would be so much easier if people would just keep in their heads a bit more often.

thistimelastweek · 24/01/2025 18:29

Good on your daughter standing by her own choices and preferences as an adult.
If he keeps up with the carping about this, she soon won't care what he has to say about anything.

PizzaPunk · 24/01/2025 18:36

mintgreensoftlilac · 24/01/2025 15:52

But the OP's daughter is a grown woman using TikTok? 😳

Honestly OP, just tell him to unfollow her or stop moaning and repeat every time he starts.

AngelinaFibres · 24/01/2025 18:44

In the words of Buzz Lightyear " You are a strange, sad little man and you have my pity"

Thepossibility · 24/01/2025 18:49

I think it's a wonderful thing to be able to see your child enjoying their life on the other side of the world so often. An absolute privilege.

GreyAreas · 24/01/2025 18:57

I would push back hard on this his comments to her would not be acceptable to me if made more than once anyway.

Dontlletmedownbruce · 24/01/2025 18:58

Good on your DD for putting him in his place. She is old enough to do what she wants and he needs to suck it up.

All that said, I agree with your DH, to me it is pointless, pathetic, embarrassing as you say, and may I add immature and attention seeking. I would be unhappy if my adult DCs did this and thats the truth. The difference is i would keep my opinions to myself and not look at the content again.

I doubt very much it's jealousy as PPs suggest. Its most likely a strong dislike of this type of show off self indulgent behaviour that many young people seem to enjoy. He is entitled to hate this as much as she is entitled to do it. The issue is his complaining about it.

adviceneeded1990 · 24/01/2025 19:09

He needs to shut up and not watch it! Coming from someone who hates TikTok and finds it cringey AF! Just remove yourself if it bothers you! It’s odd that he gives it this much headspace really!

Costcolover · 25/01/2025 15:48

I agree with your DH about the ridiculous attention-seeking dances being pathetic as those kind of videos really make me cringe! I can’t swipe past them fast enough!

However if he's already made his feelings on them clear then he doesn't need to keep repeating it every time.
Also, I don't think the whole "Well he's on there himself, therefore he's a hypocrite" argument is valid as TikTok has all sorts on it now. The childish cringey dances were 2020/2021. The majority of content on there now, doesn't involve any dancing. I don't post on TikTok but I do follow a few funny people on there who have me in stitches every time.
