AIBU to think my DH has gone mad over this baby name?

So, I’m currently 37 weeks pregnant with DC2, and DH and I are still arguing over the name. For context, we have a DS(4) called Oliver (family name, everyone loved it, no issues there). But this time, DH has got it into his head that we should name DD something, frankly, ridiculous.

He wants to call her Nevaeh. Yes, “Heaven” backwards. He says it’s “unique but meaningful.” I think it’s chavvy and will age terribly (sorry if that offends anyone). I mean, can you imagine a 50 year old Nevaeh filling out her pension forms?

I’ve suggested plenty of other names Sophie, Amelia, even Freya but he keeps turning them down as “too common.” Meanwhile, he’s vetoed names I love (Florence, Ivy, Matilda) because he “knew a girl in school with that name and she was annoying.” 🙄

WWYD? Am I being unreasonable or is DH completely deluded?

P.S. Posting for traffic!

Dds friend spells it Neve

This. The spanish/portuguese version is spelt like this and means snow. You do not have to choose the Irish spelling.

Esidarap. Tell him that's what you'd like as it's Paradise reversed. Heaven backwards is hell. 😊

Edited to say, I see someone else is also a backwards Paradise fan!

Edited

Great minds!

2 of My granddaughters are Verity and Felicity meaning truth and happiness if he wants ‘meaningful’ names. Both quite unusual but ‘normal’.

my 2 newest granddaughters are Robyn and Wren which I love. Even if people do keep telling us we’ve spelt Robyn wrong lol. It’s the standard female spelling as far as we’re aware.

the 2 I have custody of are Faith and Hope. I cringed when they were first named but used to it now.

They're all nice names individually (except Wren), but the pairings are a bit unfortunate if they're siblings. Please tell me there aren't siblings called Robyn and Wren? If so, maybe they'll get another one named Blackbird! 😂

And maybe Hope and Faith will get a sibling named Glory! Then you can take Faith, Hope and Glory out for lunch! 🤣🤣🤣

I really like Felicity. And it can't easily be shortened. Verity's a bit blue-rinse.

Oh I couldn’t get onside with this name either! I let my friends older girls pick my youngest name and I had some strict rules 😂

MrsMitford3 · 21/01/2025 12:03

Don't back down @kweefa

Despite the fact that it a truly awful name that's not actually the point.

The point is that you don't like it.
Doesn't matter if it is Ann or Mary.

You 100% get a say and if you don't like it he needs to move on.

This is about finding a name together for you child-not for him to declare a name and expect you to accept it. You need to BOTH like it.

Absolutely stick to your guns.

Has he forgotten who has carried this baby for nine months and who is pushing this baby out??

Don't give up your voice and saddle the baby with a name you will always hate.

Chantal (spelled this way) is an established name that wasn't uncommon in the 70s and 80s. I know a QC named Chantal.

Maybe I'm weird, but I'm also uncomfortable with calling a girl heaven because so many men describe penetrative sex as feeling like heaven. 🤮

Oh thank you, not just me then 😡 🤮

Because no one ever listens. My brother is called Ryan, which is obviously a common name now, but wasn’t that well known when we were growing up. Everyone he ever introduced himself to would look confused and say, “Brian?” When he’d correct them they’d still shrug their shoulders and say, “Brian?” (Why they thought Brian would be right the second or third time when it wasn’t the first is anybody’s guess.)

That was with a name that isn’t hard to pronounce even if you’ve never heard of it. I imagine it would be ten times worse with something where the spelling gives you no clue as to the pronunciation.

maybe its an english name thing. and the aversion to being different or standing out in anyway.

I have an uncommon name, i will say it and repeat it. It's my name, I can't say I even think about it as an annoyance, to make sure people get it right.

I don't allow nick names or shortening of it. Say it right.

I have very rarely in the last 10 years had anyone who hasn't made the effort to say it right and remember the first time. its just not seen as polite behaviour anymore to be dismissive of peoples names.

as the saying goes "if you can say Tchaikovsky you can say Uzoamaka"

I'm gonna bite the bullet and say it doesn't sound that bad however heaven backwards is Hell and the name feels kind of demonic/spooky based on that. Op should veto it like he vetoed her six names.

Honestly I don't get why people are saying it's chavvy tbh as for the chavviest name that is obviously Chantelle

To be fair though, OP, I'm not keen on your suggestions of Ivy, Matilda, and Florence, either. The war is over, Hitler is dead, and rationing has ended! 😂 (But they're still miles better than backwards heaven. Anything is better than that.)

Amelia and Sophia are much better. Freya is trying to hard to be cool.

Chickychoccyegg · 21/01/2025 11:56

It's a popular name for people that have had a miscarriage or still birth, I know several people who have named their child this is these circumstances, I don't know any living child with that name though.
It's not a name I would choose, partly because of this and partly because I think its chavvy, hope you find a compromise soon.

TeenLifeMum · 21/01/2025 11:54

I find it quite a sad name as I don’t want to think of my child going to heaven, that’s quite upsetting. I’ve never understood the “beauty” in the name.

Oodlesandoodlesofnoodles · 21/01/2025 11:53

There’s an app you can get that’s like tinder but for baby names. Maybe you could try it?

Tell him you met a woman called Nevaeh and she was really annoying.

Thereislightattheendofthetunnel · 21/01/2025 11:53

With you OP too. I love Ivy 😉

Yes, he has gone certifiably mad. Does he not know that Neveah is one of the chavviest names in existence? Good God. I would veto this one hard.

theriseandfallofFranklinSaint · 21/01/2025 11:53

Hang on... you say the name Caoimhe as Kee-va??? 😮

ChicLilacSeal · 21/01/2025 11:52

Suggest Esidarap. That's Paradise backwards. It will be unique!

Or Euqinu, pronounced You-kin-oo. 🤣🤭

WaltzingWaters · 21/01/2025 11:51

Yeah it’s a big no on Nevaeh. It is chavvy and it isn’t unique, it got pretty popular for a while.

Siddalee · 21/01/2025 11:47

If it’s “names backward” with religious connotations that are his thing, he’s missed the all time best one!

Do you like

Andrea
Althea
Eliza
Estella

Just thinking that those end with the same 'Sound' as Nevaeh.

Agree that Nevaeh is very common. I often read that on here, about a name, & think 'I've never heard of that name!' But I have heard of several young Nevaeh's recently.

I also agree that if he can veto yours then you can veto his, & both start again.

Soubriquet · 21/01/2025 11:48

My favourite girls names at the moment are Imogen, Erica, Eliza and Asha.

Not the point of the thread but maybe suggest those? He can’t have known everyone called that name/think it’s too common

LostTheMarble · 21/01/2025 11:47

Needmorelego · 21/01/2025 11:42

In my head I might think "poor kid" but I wouldn't say anything out loud.
When he's older his mates will probably shorten it to Luce or do that boy thing of adding an O on the end.
He'll be "Luce-o" for his teen years.

Lucifer is less about a nickname and far more about the negative label put on a young child. As has already been shown on this thread, a whole person’s personality/social group will be ill judged based on a name. Imagine being called literally devil child from birth. And depending where he’s raised, some children from devout families may be told to keep away from him completely, that’s more than just a bit of eyebrow raising then forgetting about it.
