To think that non drinkers are often hard work..

My best friend of many years has recently decided to go tee total on alcohol - what started as sober October (which I fully support!) has now escalated to never drinking again.. AIBU to think she’s being a bit of a kill joy?! I fully agree that we all need to be mindful of alcohol consumption but I can’t understand the need to place unnecessary limits on yourself for the rest of your life. Now every single night out or restaurant trip must be centred around finding a bar with good ‘mocktails’ - frankly when buying rounds I’ve refused to pay through the roof prices for a bit of fruit juice in a fancy glass when a ‘real’ drink costs the same amount. She seems to quite enjoy the moral superiority of things and will often make comments towards the rest of us where we are drinking. It’s all a bit exhausting!

Definitely no pregnancy/health issues - we’re very close. She was never a heavy drinker so no addiction issues, same on my side. We were always just a cocktail/glass of wine or two girls and would never really drink to get drunk, hence I don’t understand why she can’t just drink in moderation like she has always done. She seems to be actively making life difficult for herself (and those around her)..

Surely going to somewhere that has decent mocktails is no more challenging (actually probably less) than finding somewhere that does decent real ale, wine by the glass, other alcoholic drink of choice?

How does it actually affect you if she’s not drinking but still happy to socialise and isn’t policing what you’re drinking?

Wow. I don't drink at all, haven't for over 30 years - I just drink whatever sugar-free variety of Coke or Pepsi is going, and I can't think of a single occasion where anyone has ever questioned me about it. Well, they might assume I'm driving which I usually am, obvs. If anyone asks me a direct question "why aren't you drinking" I'll give the short version (I used up all my drinking days as a teenager, got no tolerance for it now) and they just accept it.

Why is it such a big deal to you? Are you worried that she won't be as fun if you're drunk and she's not?

Frankly she’s one of those people who is far better in social situations if she has had a drink and our whole circle agrees on that - so yes, it is a kill joy.

Fuckin’ hell…that’s a bit bloody arsey of you, OP! Why not pay the same amount for the fruit juice…presumably she’s not pouting about having to fork out for your alcoholic drinks when buying in a round. Just find some nice bars that suit all of you. Alcohol’s not great for any of us so if not drinking is working for your friend, just let her get on with it!

Startingagainandagain · 17/12/2024 21:58

Really?

You're the one that sounds like hard work...

Fucking hell OP. If you can’t tolerate her unless she’s had a drink and your whole social circle has discussed this and reached a consensus then stop flogging a dead horse and recognise that the issue isn’t that she’s stopped drinking, it’s that you actually just don’t like her.

I am glad I don't have a friend like you.

Thatcastlethere · 17/12/2024 22:00

Some people are hard work in general. Drinking or not drinking just magnifies that. I know people who are teetotal who are loads of fun and lovely.. I know people who are teetotal who don't shut up about it and are judgemental about others. I know drinkers who are an absolute liability and ruin any fun occasion with their irresponsibility.. and I know drinkers who are great fun.

I don't think it's about being teetotal or not
And also someone's decision to drink or not drink isn't a judgement on you necessarily.. mind you aren't being defensive for no real reason

Maybe it's because she's in an environment where her 'friends' are judging her. Honestly it is starting to sound more and more like you have an issue with alcohol.

Well that's very sad for this "friend " of yours. You can't even be happy for her and instead prefer her with alcohol. You need to look at yourself and your group and wonder whst type of friends you really are

You and your circle 🤢🤢🤢sound insufferable. This poor girl does not have to drink alcohol. Hope she finds some new unbitchy friends

Deciding not to drink alcohol isn’t putting a ban on yourself. It’s simply deciding not to drink. Maybe she wants to feel better, sleep better and look after herself. Lots of people don’t drink for lots of reasons. They don’t regard themselves as martyrs.

BromptonBay · 17/12/2024 21:49

Whether you’d like to believe it or not, I am a very mindful drinker - usually only a few per month. My friend was also mindful but would typically drink a bit more often hence why the sudden switch has baffled me.

How is it really anything to do with you?

Frankly you don't sound like a very good friend

Well, fair enough I guess...I see your point. Maybe if there is enough of you drinking, her more insular non-drinking persona won't be as noticeable?

Unfortunately though, there's nothing you can do about her choices!

It should come as a relief to her.

MumOfOneAllAlone · 17/12/2024 22:03

I think, in terms of the superiority thing, you're not being unreasonable

People that don't drink, vegans, cyclists and child free people love telling everybody about it, when no-ones asked 🙄

You've got child free people telling you about how much sleep they get, unprovoked???!! 😄

But, you should support your friend, op - and aren't mocktails cheaper anyway?

MayaPinion · 17/12/2024 22:03

If you don’t enjoy drinking nights out with her and she’s being a pompous arse about it, do something else that doesn’t involve booze - cinema, roller skating, theatre, a band, etc.

Vaxtable · 17/12/2024 22:04

What a meanie, won’t pay for the drink she wants even though it’s the same price at an alcoholic drink

you also sound a bit jealous, that’s she’s been able to give up, can you? Or are you one of the sad people that needs an alcoholic drink to be able to enjoy yourself

I would support anyone who wanted to quit. I wish I could. Logically I know it's no good for me but alas, I enjoy it too much. The same way I enjoy sugary cake and carbs and chips.

What annoys me is when non drinkers try to become morally superior. There was an article I saw online about an alcoholic who reformed into a non drinker which is amazing but her tag line was something about how much she pities people who drink.

By all means change your habits if want to, but don't start judging other people just because you had an issue.

MN is very strange about alcohol op so I don't see you getting much agreement with your post.

Sorry, but that is a horrible thing to say. She is a better person when under the influence?

I have had people tell me that before. "You are boring when you are sober". Well, those people are not my friends anymore.

Ohnonotmeagain · 17/12/2024 22:06

Drinkers are hard work.

they think they’re cool and interesting but they’re just drunk and boring. And then the teetotallers have to look after them and get them home

the obsession with having to drink to have fun, couldn’t possibly contemplate a dry wedding or birthday, got to sneak a hop flask, liven things up.

the judgement that if you don’t drink you maybe well stay at home because you’ll just spoil the fun.

no, you don’t need alcohol to have fun. If you do, that’s a you problem.

Ella31 · 17/12/2024 22:07

Op, i knew i remembered your name from somewhere this month as your exact name had a post for lovely girl baby names and you are due next month are you not? Surely you have more going on than this and aren't drinking anyway.
