To plan on getting quite drunk at my work Christmas party?

I’m started working as a nurse about 4 months ago. Next week is my teams work night out. Our ward is split into 4 teams and mines is definitely filled with the youngest people. Our band 6 really likes a drink and is quite a crazy lady I think and people really like her for it.
This is my first big girl job so I’ve never had a professional staff Christmas party before. Do people actually get super drunk or will I be embarrassing myself just by getting drunk?

It was just meant to be a silly fun post I thought people might share silly stories etc but obviously not 😅
I def will be getting drunk … must avoid ever ending up bitter like someone the people on here! I have a brain in my head tho, won’t get too drunk. I can handle my drink.

Hospitals can be very conservative and gossipy.

Get drunk with friends or work friends away from work.

But that’s what I’m doing?

It's not bitterness to want to protect your career, you'd be a thick twat to not want to. And I was told by a Senior Nurse a few years ago that if you're on a work night out you're still bound by the rules of behaviour administered in the workplace. So just think about that before you try to match the Band 6.

You will embarrass yourself. No matter how many people you get along with at work, you don't get to choose your colleagues and there is bound to be someone at the party who will be made to feel uncomfortable by you and anyone else who plans to get drunk.

Also, planning to get drunk before you've even left the house suggests you have a drinking problem. Go out planning to have a good night, not to drink yourself to oblivion.

Qualified nurse? You need to be setting an example. Just because the Band 6 likes a drink and is 'crazy' does not mean she is necessarily popular (despite appearances) and is definitely an unprofessional way to act.
I would not be getting drunk in front of colleagues, particularly after 4 months. Trust me, I learnt the hard way!

Yeah. I've learnt the hard way too!

You shouldn''t need to be legless to have a good time. Keep it under control and have a laugh, but stop before you're not in control.

RegimentalSturgeon · 05/12/2024 13:49

Have a couple of Jägerbombs for me, OP. (As well as everything else, not instead of).

Definitely get hammered. You only live once after all and we all deserve some fun.

It's a bonding experience too. You can nurse your hangovers together.

But is it really that fun?! I don’t get the appeal! To me it is even stranger to actually ‘plan’ to feel like that. 👀Each to their own I suppose.

No, that's not what you said in your original post and the title said it all "Planning on getting quite drunk at the Christmas party"

And then you told us you were a newly qualified nurse. Bullshit. You are a nurse as I am a martian.

I have read the thread. I'm also a registered nurse with more than 40 years experience.

Nurses, like doctors, used to have serious drinking parties but I assure you, those days are long gone, at least in Australia. They can go to private parties and drink themselves until they pass out but not on public hospitals or surgeries depending on public funds.

I also assure all the young new qualified nurses I know, won't make the post the OP has made.

I'm assuming the Op is not Australian though and in the UK. Xmas parties in the NHS are not corporate affairs they are usually organised and paid for by the staff themselves in a venue that is not connected to the hospital in anyway.

madaboutpurple · 05/12/2024 13:51

My advice would be to stay sober. It is more professional. There have already been stories of becoming unwell due to drinking. I cannot stand drunk people myself.

That’s just work drinks.

Work Christmas party is when the whole department goes out, this is why people are telling you to stay in control.

OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon · 05/12/2024 13:53

Do not get drunk, you will not be doing yourself any favours.

Rewis · 05/12/2024 13:54

My advice is to not get drunk at work events. And any afterword/Christmas do is a work event. It is fine to let your hair down and have a few drinks. But do not get drunk. Once you feel a bit tipsy, change to non-alcoholic drinks. People do remember what person x and y did at Christmas do. You don't want to be a story.

DemonicCaveMaggot · 05/12/2024 13:54

The workplace is not university, your colleagues are not your friends. You are new to your team and you don't know if all your fellow employees are OK with obviously drunken behaviour, least of all your bosses - who may view you as extremely immature as a result. Everyone may get blind drunk and have to go home wrapped in bin liners but until you know that for sure, don't turn up already buzzed.

In your shoes I would not get drunk at a works do but save it for when you go out with friends (if you must).

jumpintheline · 05/12/2024 13:55

Get pissed and have a laugh. Life is short x

Which tends not to happen in the NHS at least in my experience all the Xmas parties I went when I wax a nurse were at venues paid for by the staff themselves

People with brains in their heads don't usually need to ask if it's a good idea to get shitfaced at their work xmas party...

rightoguvnor · 05/12/2024 13:57

You sound like great fun. Stories of your drunken antics will spread far and wide around the hospital and cause huge mirth.
But mark my words they'll be laughing AT you, not WITH you.

I'm not sure you do have a brain in your head, but if you do, you'll heed the good advice given here and not make a tit of yourself.

You really are extremely immature though - nobody is "bitter"! How ridiculous and totally juvenile.

You asked the question. You got answers from people who have been there, done that and regretted it, and from others who've witnessed it, and you have the neck to call people "bitter".

Look forward to seeing you back on crying here when you've done something really embarrassing or slept with someone you shouldn't...

It has happened in all the hospitals I have worked in.

You pay like £20 or something and the whole department goes.

Maybe it depends on the hospital.

God yeah. But do it away from work.

You do know that you can be disciplined for behaving inappropriately at a work do? Just in the same way as in the office.

Time to get a bit of common sense.

Powderblue1 · 05/12/2024 14:01

I get trollied but work with very good friends for 15 years. There's surely a balance between getting very drunk and being sober. I'd plan for that. If I were you I'd get merry and have fun but not drunk drunk

User43329066 · 05/12/2024 14:02

Best advice is to treat the work Christmas party as still being at work.

People have long memories and you don't want to be the person that everyone says in 5/10/20 years time 'remember when @Anon00 got so drunk
she threw up over matron
she snogged a waiter
fell asleep in the loo
had sex in a back alley
we had to call an ambulance
stayed so late she got locked into the bar.

Go out and get drunk with your real friends. Work is not the place to do it because few people there will really have your back. Possibly none if you are new.
